題材涉及種族不平等及強暴，為一部南方哥德小說與教育小說

這個成長故事由思葛講述，故事背景發生在1933~1935年的大蕭條期間，思葛父親Atticus Finch是美國南部小鎮阿拉巴馬州的小鎮梅岡鎮裡一名受過高等教育的律師。主人公和他哥哥Jem目睹他們父親為黑人Tom Robinson辯護的過程，在這個種族主義的社區裡，Tom被誣告強姦一位白人女孩。

書名來自Atticus給用氣槍打鳥的孩子們的忠告:「鶼鳥(bluejays)你們盡可以打，但是要記住，殺死模仿鳥(mockingbird)則是一種罪過。」模仿鳥代表無辜的人

 

Atticus Finch: 思葛和傑姆的父親，律師。

Jean Louise "Scout" Finch: 小說的敘述者。她是一個很男子氣的女孩，十分聰明。

Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch: 思葛的哥哥。童年時作為典型的美國男孩

Arthur "Boo" Radley: 象徵無辜的受害者，也是小說中最重要的「模仿鳥」。

Tom Robinson: 一個在種植園工作的誠實黑人。他被誣陷犯有強姦罪。

 

這本書被改編為一部1962年的獲獎電影，Gregory Peck飾演Atticus Finch獲得最佳男主角

As a Southern Gothic novel and a Bildungsroman, the primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence. Scholars have noted that Lee also addresses issues of class, courage, compassion, and gender roles in the American Deep South.

 

In 2006, British librarians ranked the book ahead of the Bible as one "every adult should read before they die".

 

Lee uses parody, satire, and irony effectively by using a child's perspective.
