DREAM CHASER  (追夢騎士)

A Taiwanese Romance of Love, Identity, and Second Chances

Dear [Agent’s Name],

I am seeking representation for DREAM CHASER, a contemporary multicultural romance set in Taiwan that combines an international love story, family drama, and an emotionally driven mystery of memory and identity. With its dual-romance structure, distinctive Taiwanese settings, and potential for screen adaptation, the project may appeal to readers drawn to cross-cultural relationships and character-driven romantic drama.

The story follows Chen Mengru, a talented Taiwanese art student, and Michael, an exchange student from Venice, Italy. Their relationship begins when Mengru invites Michael, who is struggling financially, to join her in drawing portraits for visitors at Beitou Park. As their affection deepens, they must navigate family expectations, long-distance separation, and the practical challenges of building a future together.

A parallel romance develops between Wen Aihua, a young woman from a wealthy Shanghai family, and Tang Huaimin, a Taiwanese Indigenous student whose family is connected to the tea-growing community of Dabang in Alishan. Their relationship confronts differences in social class, cultural background, and family expectations, adding another dimension to the novel’s exploration of love and personal independence.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Mengru suffers a serious accident, loses her memory, and becomes the target of a photographer who exploits her resemblance to his missing former girlfriend. Believing herself to be another woman, Mengru begins a new life without knowing who she really is. Meanwhile, Michael returns to Taiwan and searches across the island, determined to find the woman he loves. Their eventual encounter sets in motion a journey toward truth, self-recognition, and reunion.

Taiwan is integral to the story’s identity. The settings include Taipei National University of the Arts, Beitou’s hot-spring district, Alishan’s tea gardens and Dabang community, Sun Moon Lake and the Chen family home, and Taiwan’s dramatic eastern coastline. These locations offer an evocative visual landscape for the novel and potential film or television development.

I am Chen Qingyang, a Taiwanese novelist, poet, literary critic, and screenwriter. My creative and research work spans decades and includes more than 60 medium- and long-form Chinese novels, over 100 short stories, and approximately 3,000 poems, in addition to literary criticism and rhetorical studies. I studied at the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature at National Taipei University of Education and entered the cultural and creative industries through serialized fiction in 1999. In 2010, I co-founded a film and cultural-creative studio, serving as its creative director.

I would welcome the opportunity to share the project synopsis, sample chapters, author materials, and relevant screenplay information for your consideration. I am seeking representation for English-language publication and would also welcome discussion of film and television development, subject to the availability of the relevant rights.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Chen Qingyang

A Taiwanese Romance of Love, Identity, and Second Chances

An International Romance Novel with Film and Television Adaptation Potential

Author: Chen Qingyang (陳清揚)
Country of Origin: Taiwan
Proposed Genre: Contemporary Romance / Multicultural Romance / Romantic Drama
Secondary Elements: Coming-of-Age Fiction, Family Drama, Identity Mystery
Primary Setting: Taiwan
Intended Market: United States and international English-language markets
Rights Sought: English-language publication and representation; film and television rights available for discussion, subject to the author’s existing rights commitments.

1. Logline

When an Italian exchange student returns to Taiwan to find the woman he intends to marry, he discovers that she has survived a devastating accident, lost her memory, and been transformed into another man’s missing love. As he searches across the island, a second romance between a Shanghai heiress and a Taiwanese Indigenous student challenges family expectations, class prejudice, and cultural divisions.

2. Project Overview

Dream Chaser is a contemporary Taiwanese romance that follows two young couples whose relationships cross cultural, geographic, and social boundaries. Set against Taiwan’s art-school community and its diverse landscapes, the story combines the emotional appeal of first love and long-distance commitment with family conflict, an identity mystery, and a determined search for a missing fiancée.

The first love story centers on Chen Mengru, a talented young artist from Taiwan, and Michael, an exchange student from Venice, Italy. Their relationship begins with a simple act of kindness: Mengru discovers that Michael is struggling financially and invites him to join her in selling portrait drawings at Beitou Park. Working side by side, they develop a deep affection grounded in mutual respect rather than wealth or social status.

The second story follows Wen Aihua, a spirited young woman from a wealthy Shanghai family, and Tang Huaimin, a warmhearted Taiwanese Indigenous student from a family connected to the tea-growing community of Dabang in Alishan. Their romance must withstand differences in family background, social class, cultural assumptions, and the expectations placed on Aihua by her parents.

The two romances intersect through friendship, artistic ambition, family obligations, and the experience of leaving home. Their shared message is that love requires more than attraction: it requires courage, loyalty, and the willingness to recognize another person’s dignity beyond national, cultural, and economic labels.

The story takes an unexpected turn when Mengru falls from a coastal cliff in eastern Taiwan. She survives, but her head injury causes amnesia and leaves her face severely damaged. A photographer named Lin Fengmian rescues her and recognizes a resemblance between Mengru and his former girlfriend, Qiu Haiyun, who disappeared years earlier. Exploiting Mengru’s memory loss, Lin arranges reconstructive surgery to make her resemble Haiyun and persuades her that she is the missing woman.

Meanwhile, Michael refuses to accept Mengru’s disappearance as the end of their relationship. Returning to Taiwan, he begins a determined search with the help of friends, using portrait drawing and public appeals to find the woman he loves. As the search spreads across Taiwan, he encounters a woman whose voice, eyes, and gestures feel unmistakably familiar.

The final emotional conflict is not simply whether two lovers can reunite. It is whether Mengru can recover her own identity after another person has tried to rewrite her life. Her journey leads her to reject a manufactured identity and return to her family, her artistic self, and the man who never stopped searching for her.

3. Story Synopsis

Two Romances Begin at Art School

At Taipei National University of the Arts, a group of exchange students arrives for a year of study. They include Michael Garibaldi from Venice, Wen Aihua from Shanghai, Liu Tianlin from Beijing, and Xu Manfei from California. They join local students Chen Mengru, Tang Huaimin, and Wu Benyun in an environment shaped by art, friendship, competition, and romantic attraction.

Mengru is admired for her beauty, intelligence, and artistic talent. Although Wu Benyun, a handsome and socially confident local student, repeatedly pursues her, she remains cautious about his reputation as a flirt. Michael, by contrast, is reserved and unassuming. When Mengru learns that he is living on a tight budget, she invites him to earn extra money by drawing portraits with her at Beitou Park. Their shared work becomes the foundation of a relationship that grows naturally through conversation, cooperation, and everyday kindness.

At the same time, Aihua attracts the attention of two classmates: Liu Tianlin, a gifted but arrogant artist from Beijing, and Tang Huaimin, a sincere and humorous Taiwanese Indigenous student. Tianlin initially impresses Aihua with his talent, but his condescension toward local classmates and his indecision gradually undermine her trust. Huaimin’s steady affection, supported by Mengru’s encouragement, eventually wins Aihua’s heart.

When Michael confesses his feelings for Mengru, the two become a couple. Mengru, however, asks him to earn her family’s acceptance before they consider marriage. Their relationship is built on the belief that love should be accompanied by responsibility and a practical plan for the future.

Across Taiwan: Art, Family, and Cultural Discovery

During a winter break, the two couples travel together to Dabang, an Indigenous community in the Alishan region. Aihua meets Huaimin’s family and discovers a way of life connected to tea gardens, coffee cultivation, mountain landscapes, and community traditions. The visit deepens her affection for Huaimin while forcing her to consider how different their lives may be from the future her wealthy Shanghai family has imagined for her.

The journey continues to Sun Moon Lake, where Mengru introduces Michael to her family. Her mother worries that her daughter may eventually move to Italy and urges her to consider a local partner. Michael responds not with grand promises but with sincerity, humility, and respect. Gradually, Mengru’s father and younger brother come to appreciate him.

The couples also set up portrait-drawing stalls near Sun Moon Lake, extending their artistic work into a new environment. Art becomes more than a means of earning money: it gives the young people a way to meet travelers, exchange stories, and understand the communities around them.

After the exchange year ends, Michael returns to Europe, while Aihua goes back to Shanghai. The couples remain committed to one another across distance. Michael works as a designer for a luxury handbag company, saving money in the hope of opening his own business and eventually returning to Taiwan to marry Mengru.

Aihua faces a different challenge. Her parents strongly oppose her relationship with Huaimin because of cultural and social differences and their fear of losing their daughter to Taiwan. They restrict her freedom and attempt to arrange a more socially advantageous match. With the help of her younger sister, Wen Meihua, Aihua finds a way to escape and return to Taiwan.

Mengru helps Huaimin devise a plan to get Aihua safely out of Shanghai. When Aihua’s parents eventually find the couple, they are confronted with the seriousness of their daughter’s commitment. Seeing that their relationship is based on genuine care rather than rebellion, they begin to reconsider their opposition.

A Disappearance That Changes Everything

After graduation, Michael continues working toward his dream of establishing his own design business. Just as he is preparing to return to Taiwan, Mengru disappears after falling from a cliff while painting in eastern Taiwan.

Mengru survives, but her injuries leave her with memory loss and severe facial damage. Lin Fengmian, a young photographer who rescues her, learns her identity from her belongings. He also remembers Qiu Haiyun, a former girlfriend who disappeared after traveling to Europe. Because Mengru resembles Haiyun, Lin sees an opportunity to reclaim the woman he has never forgotten.

He arranges reconstructive surgery that changes Mengru’s appearance and persuades her that she is Qiu Haiyun. Unable to remember her own past, Mengru accepts this explanation and moves into the Qiu family home. Although she is treated as a returning daughter, she feels strangely disconnected from the family photographs, personal belongings, and memories that supposedly belong to her.

Michael refuses to give up. He travels to Taiwan and begins searching for Mengru with help from Huaimin and Aihua. Riding a motorcycle borrowed from Mengru’s father, he travels through cities and rural communities, setting up portrait stands and displaying pictures of his missing fiancée. His search attracts public attention, but it also alerts Lin that someone is looking for the woman he has tried to keep under his control.

When Michael finally encounters the woman now known as Qiu Haiyun, her voice and eyes awaken his suspicions. Lin repeatedly intervenes to keep them apart. Yet the familiar sound of Michael’s voice, the sight of his motorcycle, and the photographs of the missing woman begin to stir memories that Mengru cannot explain.

As fragments of her former life return, Mengru confronts the possibility that the identity she has accepted is a lie. The truth is gradually exposed: she is Chen Mengru, not Qiu Haiyun. She has been manipulated by a man who mistook resemblance for a second chance at love.

Mengru ultimately reclaims her name, her family, and her relationship with Michael. Her reunion with him resolves the central emotional question of the novel: love is not the possession of another person, nor the ability to reshape someone into an ideal. It is the courage to recognize and accept the person who truly stands before you.

4. Principal Characters

Chen Mengru / Vivian Chen — The Taiwanese Artist

A gifted, thoughtful, and compassionate art student, Mengru is the emotional center of the story. She values sincerity over status and is willing to help Michael when she realizes that he is struggling financially. After an accident erases her memory and changes her appearance, she must rebuild her identity from the outside in. Her eventual return to her original self makes her journey one of resilience, personal agency, and self-recognition.

Character arc: From a young woman building a life through art and love, to a survivor whose identity is manipulated, and finally to a woman who reclaims her past and chooses her future.

Michael Garibaldi — The Venetian Dreamer

Michael is a reserved Italian exchange student from Venice. He is neither wealthy nor socially dominant, but his sincerity, persistence, and practical ambition distinguish him from his more flamboyant peers. He falls in love with Mengru and works to establish a future that will allow them to marry. When she disappears, he crosses continents and searches Taiwan, refusing to abandon her.

Character arc: From a shy outsider to a determined partner whose loyalty is tested by distance, uncertainty, and the apparent impossibility of finding the woman he loves.

Wen Aihua — The Shanghai Heiress

Aihua is bright, independent, sociable, and accustomed to the privileges of a wealthy family. Her romance with Huaimin challenges the social future her parents have planned for her. She must decide whether to obey family expectations or accept the consequences of choosing love on her own terms.

Character arc: From a privileged young woman negotiating competing romantic choices to an independent adult prepared to defend her own decisions.

Tang Huaimin — The Taiwanese Indigenous Student

Huaimin is sincere, good-humored, and emotionally steady. Connected to a family and community in Dabang, Alishan, he represents a different social and cultural world from Aihua’s wealthy Shanghai upbringing. He refuses to let class prejudice or cultural assumptions determine the value of his relationship.

Character arc: From a young man quietly pursuing someone who seems beyond his reach to a committed partner who earns respect through patience and integrity.

5. Supporting Characters

  • Wu Benyun: A handsome, confident local student who pursues Mengru. His presence creates romantic competition and highlights the difference between attraction, vanity, and commitment.
  • Liu Tianlin: A talented Beijing art student whose pride and indecision threaten his relationship with Aihua.
  • Xu Manfei: A California-based exchange student who is attracted to Tianlin and complicates his romantic choices.
  • Lin Fengmian: A photographer who rescues Mengru but exploits her amnesia to remake her as his missing former girlfriend. He drives the identity-mystery strand of the story.
  • Zhao Jiamei: A creative director who has feelings for Lin and eventually discovers evidence of his deception.
  • The Chen Family: Mengru’s parents and younger brother represent the emotional security and family ties to which she ultimately returns.
  • The Wen Family: Aihua’s parents embody the pressures of wealth, family authority, and social expectations; her younger sister, Wen Meihua, helps her pursue independence.
  • The Qiu Family: The family that welcomes Mengru as the supposedly returned Qiu Haiyun, deepening the emotional and ethical complexity of Lin’s deception.

6. Unique Selling Points

A Distinctive Taiwan Setting

Taiwan is not merely a backdrop; it shapes the characters’ experiences, relationships, and choices. The novel moves from an urban art-school community to hot-spring streets, mountain tea gardens, Indigenous community life, a lakeside family home, and the dramatic eastern coastline.

Art as a Bridge Between People

Portrait drawing provides the story with a recurring visual motif. It first brings Mengru and Michael together, then becomes a practical way for the characters to earn money and encounter strangers, and later becomes Michael’s means of searching for Mengru. Art is both a livelihood and a form of recognition: the attempt to see another person clearly.

Two Interconnected Romances

The novel combines an international romance between an Italian man and a Taiwanese woman with a cross-strait romance between a Shanghai heiress and a Taiwanese Indigenous man. These relationships provide complementary perspectives on love, family, class, cultural identity, and personal choice.

A Romantic Story with a Mystery Engine

Mengru’s disappearance, facial reconstruction, amnesia, and assumed identity introduce suspense and emotional urgency into the romance. The reader is not only waiting to see whether the lovers reunite, but also whether Mengru can recover the truth about herself.

A Story of Love Without Possession

The novel contrasts Michael’s determination to find Mengru with Lin’s attempt to replace a lost relationship by controlling another woman’s identity. This conflict gives the story a broader emotional question: does love mean holding on to someone, or respecting who that person really is?

A Cinematic Journey Through Taiwan

The characters’ travels create a visual progression from campus life to hot springs, mountain communities, lakeside gatherings, and the Pacific-facing coastline. The locations can support both intimate romantic scenes and a broader portrait of Taiwan’s cultural and natural diversity.

7. Target Readership

The primary audience consists of adult and crossover readers who enjoy emotionally driven contemporary romance, international relationships, family conflict, and stories of identity and resilience.

Primary readership

  • Readers of multicultural and international romance.
  • Readers who enjoy long-distance relationships, reunions, and enduring commitment.
  • Readers interested in contemporary Taiwan and East Asian settings.
  • Readers who appreciate romantic dramas with a suspenseful identity mystery.

Secondary readership

  • Book-club readers interested in family expectations, cultural identity, and personal freedom.
  • Readers of coming-of-age and campus fiction.
  • Readers interested in Taiwanese art, landscapes, Indigenous communities, and cultural exchange.
  • Producers and development executives seeking character-driven romance with a distinctive international setting.

The novel is best positioned as contemporary multicultural romance with a romantic-drama and identity-mystery dimension, rather than as fantasy or a conventional thriller.

8. Film and Television Adaptation Potential

Dream Chaser has several features that lend themselves to screen adaptation: two parallel romances, a strong emotional reunion, an identity mystery, recurring visual motifs, and a range of distinctive Taiwanese locations.

Potential formats

  • A feature-length romantic drama.
  • A limited television or streaming series.
  • A bilingual or multilingual international co-production.

A feature film could focus on Mengru and Michael’s relationship, the disappearance, and the search across Taiwan, while using Aihua and Huaimin’s romance as a complementary storyline. A limited series could give both couples more room to develop and allow the identity deception and family conflicts to unfold gradually.

The visual identity of the project could be built around several locations and recurring images:

  • Taipei National University of the Arts: an artistic campus where international students meet and the relationships begin.
  • Beitou Park and the hot-spring district: an atmospheric setting for portrait drawing, early intimacy, and the characters’ everyday lives. Beitou is an established hot-spring destination with historical and cultural attractions. (Taiwan Tourism Administration)
  • Alishan tea gardens and Dabang: a mountain setting for family hospitality, cultural discovery, and Aihua’s growing connection to Huaimin.
  • Sun Moon Lake and the Chen family home or guesthouse: a warm family environment that contrasts with the pressures of the outside world.
  • Eastern Taiwan’s coastal cliffs: a dramatic setting for Mengru’s accident and the turning point that transforms the story.

The film adaptation opportunity lies in the combination of an accessible romantic premise and a setting that offers a distinctive visual identity. The project could also support location-based marketing, tourism partnerships, and international audience engagement around Taiwan’s landscapes and cultural diversity.

These are development opportunities rather than guarantees of production or financing. A realistic screen-market assessment would require a screenplay review, budget range, language strategy, casting approach, and producer or distributor feedback.

9. U.S. Market Positioning and Commercial Outlook

The U.S. romance category offers a meaningful audience base. Publishers Weekly, reporting Circana BookScan data, stated that U.S. print romance sales rose 3.9% in 2025 to nearly 44 million units. This indicates continued demand for romance as a broad category, although it does not predict the sales of any individual title.

For the American market, Dream Chaser has a clear positioning opportunity at the intersection of:

  • Contemporary romance.
  • Multicultural and international relationships.
  • Family-centered emotional drama.
  • Taiwan-focused fiction with strong visual and cultural specificity.

Its strongest commercial distinction is not simply that it is a love story set in Asia. It combines two romantic relationships with different cultural tensions, an artist’s search for identity, and a cross-island journey through Taiwan. This combination may appeal to readers who want an emotionally accessible story while discovering a setting less familiar to many U.S. readers.

Commercial assessment: The project is best presented as a promising midlist-to-breakout possibility whose prospects would depend on the quality of the English-language manuscript, the agent’s positioning, the publisher’s acquisition strategy, reviews, publicity, and distribution. It would be misleading to promise a specific sales figure before those factors are known.

A practical submission package should include:

  1. A polished English-language manuscript or clearly stated manuscript status.
  2. A concise query letter and one-page synopsis.
  3. A full synopsis and sample chapters, following each agent’s submission guidelines.
  4. A brief film/television adaptation overview.
  5. A rights statement clarifying which publishing and screen rights are available.

2. Michael Garibaldi——
