      1.consolidate/kənˈsal.ɪ.deɪt/ (v.)

Definition: (1.) to become, or cause something to become, stronger, and more certain (2.) to combine several things, especially businesses, so that they become more effective, or to be combined in this way

Ex. The two banks will consolidate in July next year.


 2.playful /ˈpleɪ.fəl/ (a.)

Definition: funny and not serious

Ex. Mary took a playful swipe at her brother.

 

      3.incongruity/ˌɪn.kənˈɡruː.ə.ti/ (n.)

Definition: the fact that something is incongruous

Ex. Sharon smiled at the incongruity of the question.

 

      4.idle /ˈaɪ.dl̩/ (a.)

Definition: not working or being used

Ex. Mike doesn't study at all. Instead, he sits idle all day.


5.gorge/ɡɔrdʒ/(n.)

Definition: a deep narrow valley with steep sides, usually formed by a river or stream cutting through hard rock

Ex. Wind was funneling through the gorge.

Definition: a large number or wide range (of something)

Ex. This situation can be influenced by a multiplicity of different factors.

Definition: the fact of making something seem larger, more important, better, or worse than it really is

Ex. It is no exaggeration to say that having a baby changes your life.


      8.patent /ˈpæt.ənt/(n.)

Definition: the official legal right to make or sell an invention for a particular number of years

Ex. This is a fact patent to the world.


      9.cement /sɪˈment/(n.)

Definition: a grey powder that is mixed with water and sand to make mortar or with water, sand, and small stones to make concrete

Ex. The specs fell on the cement floor and broke up.


10.misrepresentation /ˌmɪs.rep.rɪ.zenˈteɪ.ʃən/ (n.)

Definition: something that misrepresents an idea, situation, or opinion, or the fact of something being misrepresented

Ex. Bob now wants to sue the magazine for misrepresentation.


      11.outright /ˌaʊtˈraɪt/ (adv.)

Definition: completely or immediately

Ex. Three people were killed outright in the accident.


      12.castaway /ˈk æ.stə.weɪ/(n.)

Definition: a person who has escaped from a ship that has sunk, and managed to get to an island or country where there are few or no other people

Ex. Lily had the doomed sense of the castaway who has signalled in vain to fleeing sails.


      13.lowlife /ˈloʊˌlɑɪf/(n.)

Definition: someone of bad character

Ex. He finds his wife has deserted him and with a dirty lowlife too.


      14.avid /ˈæv.ɪd/(a.)

Definition: extremely eager or interested

Ex. John is rich, but he is still avid of more money.


      15.plausible/ˈplɔ.zə.bl̩/ (a.)

Definition: seeming likely to be true, or able to be believed

Ex. Katy’s story sounded perfectly plausible.


16.vehement /ˈvi.ə.mənt/(a.)

Definition: expressing strong feelings, or shown by strong feelings or great energy or force

Ex: Charlotte made a vehement attack on the government's policies.

 

      17.heroine /ˈher. oʊ.ɪn/ (n.)

Definition: (1.)a woman who is admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great (2.) the main female character in a book or film who is usually good

Ex: She's the prettiest, most ethereal romantic heroine in the movies.


      18.gardening /ˈɡɑr.dən.ɪŋ/(n.)

Definition: the job or activity of working in a garden, growing and taking care of the plants, and keeping it attractive

Ex: Miley’s hobbies include swimming and gardening.


      19.evocative /ɪˈvak.ə.tɪv/(v.)

Definition: making you remember or imagine something pleasant

Ex. The taste of the cakes was evocative of my childhood.


      20.belittle /bɪˈlɪt.l̩/(v.)

Definition: to make a person or an action seem as if it or they are not important

Ex: I find it belittle to be reprimanded by someone so much younger than me.


      21.crest /krest/ (n.)

Definition: the top or highest part of something such as a wave or a hill

  Ex. We climbed to the crest of the hill.


      22.slack /slæk/ (a.)

      Definition: loose and not firmly stretched or tightly in position. 

  Ex.His jaw went slack, and he looked puzzled.


     23.patio /ˈpæt.iˌoʊ/ (n.)

 Definition: an outside area with a solid floor next to a house, where people can sit

Ex.The patio gave an unimpeded view across the headland to the sea.


      24.huff /hʌf/ (n.)

      Definition: to breathe loudly, esp. after physical exercise

Ex.He huffed and puffed going up the stairs.


      25.intercept /ˌɪn.tərˈsept/ (v.)

     Definition: to stop or catch something or someone that is on the way from one place to another so that it does not reach the intended place

     Ex.The ball was intercepted by Andy.
