VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

merge

definition: to cause (two or more things, such as two companies) to come together and become one thing.  to join or unite (one thing) with another

use the word in a sentence: To save the business, the owners decided to merge it with one of their competitors.

root: merge- dip, dive  ex: immerge, immerse, submerge

property

definition: something that is owned by a person, business, etc.

use the word in a sentence: We are not responsible for the loss of personal property.

absorb

definition: to take in (something, such as a liquid) in a natural or gradual way

use the word in a sentence: The walls are made of a material that absorbs sound.

root: ab-from, away, off  ex: abnormal, absent, aversion, abbreviate

attractive

definition: having a pleasing appearance; especially : having a pleasing appearance that causes romantic or sexual feelings in someone

definition: used to say that a statement you are making is true or correct at most times or that it describes a usual situation or condition

definition:  a usually good quality or feature that someone or something has

definition: to make (someone or something) strong, healthy, or active again

definition: 1. to lift or move (something or someone) to a higher position 2. to lift or move (something or someone) to a standing or more upright position

definition:  to arrange and plan (an event or activity)

definition:  to ask people to do or support (something) in a way that shows that you believe it is very important

refuse

definition: to say that you will not accept (something, such as a gift or offer) 2. to say or show that you are not willing to do something that someone wants you to do

use the word in a sentence: When they offered me the money, I couldn't refuse.

addict

definition: 1. a person who is not able to stop taking drugs : a person who is addicted to drugs 2. a person who likes or enjoys something very much and spends a large amount of time doing it, watching it, etc.

epidemic

definition: affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time 

use the word in a sentence: the little girl's giggles were epidemic, and soon the entire gathering was laughing.

combat

definition:  a fight or contest between individuals or groups

use the word in a sentence: Some of these soldiers have never seen combat.

inventive

definition: having or showing an ability to think of new ideas and methods : creative or imaginative

sober

definition: 1. not drunk 2. having or showing a very serious attitude or quality

hostel

definition: 1. an inexpensive place for usually young travelers to stay overnight 2. a shelter for homeless people

use the word in a sentence: In the old days, a traveler could spend the night at one of the hostels placed along the coach route.

definition: 1. a house usually in the country where people can eat and rent a room to sleep in 2. a pub

use the word in a sentence: We stayed at a cozy little inn in the country.

counselor

definition: 1. a person who provides advice as a job 2. a person who counsels people 3. a person who is in charge of young people at a summer camp

strict

definition: used to describe a command, rule, etc., that must be obeyed

use the word in a sentence: Her parents aren't very strict.
