The Joro spider, despite its rapid spread and imposing size, is not aggressive but incredibly timid. This East Asian arachnid, now populating the Southeastern U.S., freezes when disturbed and thrives in urban environments due to its shy nature and substantial reproductive potential. New Study Suggests the Massive Spiders Are Gentle Giants, Mean People No Harm The Joro spider, despite its intimidating size and rapid spread across Southeastern U.S., is surprisingly timid according to a study from the University of Georgia. Contrary to initial speculation, the Joro spider is not aggressive but rather freezes for more than an hour when disturbed, which is significantly longer than most spiders. This spider, originally from East Asia, is believed to have arrived in Georgia around 2013 via a shipping container and has since proliferated across the state. Despite their intimidating appearance, the giant yellow and blue-black spiders spreading across the Southeastern U.S. owe their survival to a surprising trait: They’re rather timid. According to a new study from the University of Georgia, the Jorō (Joro) spider may be the shyest spider ever documented. “One of the ways that people think this spider could be affecting other species is that it’s aggressive and out-competing all the other native spiders,” said Andy Davis, lead author of the study and a research scientist in UGA’s Odum School of Ecology. “So we wanted to get to know the personality of these spiders and see if they’re capable of being that aggressive. “It turns out they’re not.” While most spiders begin moving again shortly after being disturbed, Joro spiders like the one here remain immobile for more than an hour. Credit: Peter Frey/UGA The researchers compared more than 450 spiders’ responses to a brief and harmless disturbance across 10 different species. While most spiders froze for less than a minute before resuming their normal activities, the Joro spiders remained motionless for more than an hour. “They basically shut down and wait for the disturbance to go away,” Davis said. “Our paper shows that these spiders are really more afraid of you than the reverse.” In fact, Joros are relatively harmless to people and pets. Joros won’t bite unless cornered. And even if you did manage to somehow annoy a Joro into biting you, its fangs likely wouldn’t be large enough to pierce your skin. Most Spiders Begin Moving Quickly After Stress, Joros Remain Immobile for 60-Plus Minutes To examine the spiders’ reaction to stress, the researchers used a turkey baster to gently blow two rapid puffs of air onto individual spiders. This minor disturbance causes the spiders to “freeze” for a period of time, going absolutely still. The researchers tested more than 30 garden spiders, banded garden spiders, and marbled orb weavers. They also analyzed similar data from previously published, peer-reviewed papers that assessed the response of 389 more spiders, comprising five additional species. A female Joro spider spins its web. The Joros, however, stayed frozen with no body or leg movement for over an hour in most cases. The only other spider species that exhibited a similarly extended response was the Joro spider’s cousin, the golden silk spider. Known as Trichonephila clavipes, the golden silk spider and the Joro spider are from the same genus. Joros May Be Invasive, but They’re Not Aggressive Officially known as Trichonephila clavata, the East Asian Joro spider first arrived in Georgia around 2013. The species is native to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China, and likely hitched a ride stateside on a shipping container. The species has since rapidly spread across the state and much of the Southeast. Credit: University of Georgia Davis’ previous research even suggested the invasive arachnids could spread beyond their current habitats and through most of the Eastern Seaboard. “Most people think ‘invasive’ and ‘aggressive’ are synonymous,” said Amitesh Anerao, co-author of the study and an undergraduate researcher at the university. “People were freaking out about the Joro spiders at first, but maybe this paper can help calm people down.” Joro Spiders Built To Withstand Human Activity Joros are regularly spotted in areas native Georgia spiders don’t typically inhabit. Their prolonged freeze response to being startled could help conserve the Joro spiders’ energy. “They’re so good at living with humans that they’re probably not going away anytime soon.” Amitesh Anerao If you’re wondering how something so mild-mannered could spread the way Joro spiders have, you aren’t the only one. “One thing this paper tells me is that the Joros’ rapid spread must be because of their incredible reproductive potential,” Davis said. “They’re simply outbreeding everybody else. It’s not because they’re displacing native spiders or kicking them out of their own webs.” Arachnophobes can take solace in the Joro spiders’ meek and gentle temperament. New research reveals a range of complex opinions surrounding plans to reintroduce the lynx in Scotland. The lynx went extinct in Britain over a thousand years ago, but some conservation organizations argue that the species could play a role in restoring natural ecosystems. A new study conducted by researchers from the Vincent Wildlife Trust and the University of Exeter explored the perspectives of stakeholders, including farmers, land managers, and conservationists. “Our results show that views in Scotland about potential future lynx reintroduction are far more diverse, nuanced, and complex than might have been assumed,” said lead author David Bavin, of Vincent Wildlife Trust. “Rather than a simple binary split of ‘for’ and ‘against’, we found a spectrum of different perspectives.” Diverse Opinions on Lynx Reintroduction Five distinct perspectives were identified: “Lynx for Change”: supportive of lynx reintroduction, feeling that lynx could facilitate ecosystem restoration. “Lynx for Economy”: also supportive, anticipating economic benefits to local communities. “No to Lynx”: strongly opposed, perceiving that humans are fulfilling the roles of absent large carnivores. “Scotland is not Ready”: supported the conversation but perceived prohibitive socio-ecological barriers. “We are not Convinced”: not satisfied that an adequate case for biodiversity gain had been made but were open to further exploration of the potential. Bavin continued: “The study identified important areas of disagreement over the potential impacts on sheep farming and the degree to which our environment should be managed by people or encouraged to self-regulate. There was a lack of trust between stakeholder groups, which primarily stemmed from some of the participants’ experiences of previous wildlife reintroductions and the management of recovering predators. Encouragingly, however, there was agreement that, for any discussion about lynx reintroduction to move forward, a participatory and cooperative approach is essential.” Dr. Sarah Crowley, from the University of Exeter, added: “The study provides a foundation for future dialogue between stakeholders over the prospective reintroduction of the lynx to Scotland. The findings also have wider relevance for wildlife reintroductions, species recovery, and conservation conflicts elsewhere.” The study was carried out in the Cairngorms National Park, based on detailed discussions with 12 people representing a range of groups with an interest in the issue of lynx reintroduction. A second stage then took place, with 34 new participants taking a survey to give their views on a range of statements about the issue.

Credit: The Ocean Cleanup, in coordination with Smithsonian Institution A study reveals coastal invertebrates are thriving on plastic debris in the North Pacific, forming neopelagic communities previously unseen in open oceans, posing risks of invasive species spreading to ecosystems like Hawaii’s fragile reefs. A team of researchers from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa, has recently published a study in Nature Ecology and Evolution, revealing that a surprising number of coastal marine invertebrate species have colonized the high seas and are now thriving and reproducing in the open ocean, significantly shaping the composition of the floating community. The study conducted by the researchers discovered that over 70 percent of the plastic debris they examined in the eastern North Pacific Subtropical Gyre was colonized by diverse coastal species belonging to various taxonomic groups and possessing different life history traits. Additionally, the plastic debris was found to carry more coastal species than open ocean species. “This discovery suggests that past biogeographical boundaries among marine ecosystems — established for millions of years — are rapidly changing due to floating plastic pollution accumulating in the subtropical gyres,” said lead author Linsey Haram, research associate at SERC. These researchers only recently discovered the existence of these “neopelagic communities,” or floating communities in deep ocean waters. To understand the ecological and physical processes that govern communities on floating marine debris, SERC, and UH Mānoa formed a multi-disciplinary Floating Ocean Ecosystem (FloatEco) team. UH Mānoa led the assessment of physical oceanography and SERC evaluated the biological and ecological dimensions of the study. Credit: The Ocean Cleanup For this study, the FloatEco team analyzed 105 plastic samples collected by The Ocean Cleanup during their 2018 and 2019 expeditions in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, which occupies most of the northern Pacific Ocean. The fieldwork relied on the participation of both individual volunteers and non-governmental organizations. “We were extremely surprised to find 37 different invertebrate species that normally live in coastal waters, over triple the number of species we found that live in open waters, not only surviving on the plastic but also reproducing,” said Haram. “We were also impressed by how easily coastal species colonized new floating items, including our own instruments — an observation we’re looking into further.” Paradigm Shift in Marine Biogeography “Our results suggest coastal organisms now are able to reproduce, grow, and persist in the open ocean — creating a novel community that did not previously exist, being sustained by the vast and expanding sea of plastic debris,” said co-author Gregory Ruiz, senior scientist at SERC. “This is a paradigm shift in what we consider to be barriers to the distribution and dispersal of coastal invertebrates.” While scientists already knew organisms, including some coastal species, colonized marine plastic debris, scientists were unaware until now that established coastal communities could persist in the open ocean. These findings identify a new human-caused impact on the ocean, documenting the scale and potential consequences that were not previously understood. “The Hawaiian Islands are neighbored in the northeast by the North Pacific garbage patch,” said Nikolai Maximenko, co-author and senior researcher at the UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. “Debris that breaks off from this patch constitutes the majority of debris arriving on Hawaiian beaches and reefs. In the past, the fragile marine ecosystems of the islands were protected by the very long distances from coastal communities of Asia and North America.
