Excerpt：〈普魯斯特的第一句〉(莊信正的《流光拋影》)
意外地在莊信正的文學評論集《流光拋影》裡讀到普魯斯特，他特別談到《追憶似水年華》的第一句該如何翻譯，這不禁讓我想起多年前自己在部落格裡寫下的一段文字：
再次翻開《追憶似水年華》的第一頁，「在很長一段時期裡，我都是早早就躺下了......」
這一段開頭來回讀過數十次，但這並非表示自己如何認真殷勤，反倒是記錄著一次又一次中斷之後又重新開始的困頓：
「在很長一段時期裡，我都是早早就放棄不讀了......」
最終，我有幸讀完《追憶似水年華》，而在閱讀旅程中所遭遇顛沛流離的這一切，也都甘之如飴了。
Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure. Parfois, à peine ma bougie éteinte, mes yeux se fermaient si vite que je n’avais pas le temps de me dire : « Je m’endors. » Et, une demi-heure après, la pensée qu’il était temps de chercher le sommeil m’éveillait ; je voulais poser le volume que je croyais avoir dans les mains et souffler ma lumière ; je n’avais pas cessé en dormant de faire des réflexions sur ce que je venais de lire, mais ces réflexions avaient pris un tour un peu particulier ; il me semblait que j’étais moi-même ce dont parlait l’ouvrage : une église, un quatuor, la rivalité de François Ier et de Charles-Quint. Cette croyance survivait pendant quelques secondes à mon réveil ; elle ne choquait pas ma raison, mais pesait comme des écailles sur mes yeux et les empêchait de se rendre compte que le bougeoir n’était plus allumé.

This impression would persist for some moments after I was awake; it did not disturb my mind, but it lay like scales upon my eyes and prevented them from registering the fact that the candle was no longer burning.

《追憶似水年華》(À la recherche du temps perdu) 在普魯斯特死後於一九二七年出齊；中譯本由十五個人分工合作，從一九八九年六月到去年十月，共七卷出齊，使中國讀者得見全豹……
我費了很多周折，至終承北京一位世交托人在南京買全寄贈。接到後迫不及待地打開看第一句譯文是：「在很長一段時期裏，我都是早早就躺下了。」
原文 “Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure”是法國小學生都背得出的名句，但也是學者爭論不休的「難句」。最奇特的是全書長三千頁，幾乎唯有這句使用複合過去式 (passé composé)，第二句起猝然改為未完成過去式 (imparfait)，令人乍開頭就爲之一楞。作者是什麼意思呢？衆說紛紜，從下面幾個英文譯法便可看出：

法文原句和六種英譯文字都很淺顯，文法也很簡單，但經普魯斯特這麼一放，就複雜起來了。首先是時態，複合過去式既指過去，又意味著過去牽涉到、影響到現在，因此又要過去不定式 (passé indefini)，普魯斯特藉這個時態顯示主人公童年時代和執筆時的現在都是夜裏很早上牀，同時點出他現在追憶過去 (全書貫串了這種雙重時間性)。這樣，斯考特‧蒙克利夫多年來備受稱譽的英譯本中這句的處理 (例句一) 站不住腳了，因為「used to」斷然把時間放在過去，與現在無涉。怪的是前些年吉爾馬丁進行修訂時恰好為了同第二句保持時態統一而未加改動。(另一方面，幾十年當中包括納包科夫和愛德蒙‧威爾遜在內的許多方家也都沒有異言。) 澳大利亞的格利夫敩授 (例句三) 用「was」和「went」，犯了同樣毛病。
批評家夏托克 (例句二) 在討論過程中提出了逐字譯法，緊貼原文，有其參考價値。小說家奧欽克羅斯 (例句六) 用了現在完成進行式，似乎過於強調現在的份量。我看詩人康恩 (例句四) 比較可取；近些年正在發憤重譯全書的詩人兼翻譯家霍華德 (例句五) 就也是採用現在完成式。
事實上，這浩瀚的巨著第一句的第一個詞「Longtemps」(長時間) 就是翻譯者的絆腳石，至少中英文難以找到恰當的同義詞來表逹。書名裏含有「時間」，第二句兩次提到「時間」，終卷最末一詞大寫的「Temps」，彷彿時間最後活生生地變成一個人物，其重要性可想而知。霍華德認爲必須恪遵原文，以「Time」開頭，這一點他同意格利夫，卻反對把時間硬定在過去，也不喜歡多加「always」。他堅持「Time and again」是最妥善的字眼，但我相信會有人拒絕接受。
結尾讓我們回頭再看中文本的譯法。「一段」也是把時間限制在過去，同現在隔絕。「時期」不如「時間」。「都」字相當於「always」，不但蛇足，且語氣太重。「躺下」略嫌籠統，並未表明夜裏上牀就寢的原意。
發過議論，我參照羣賢的功績，鼓勇試譯如下：
長時間以來，我很早便上牀就寢。
但一與原句對比，就不免發生疑問：譯道之難，有時候是否難於上青天？
