Parents Concerned Over the On-going Cultural Revolution in Taiwan
By VidocqLee | Posted August 4, 2015 | Taiwan
On the night of July 23rd and 31st, a group of high school protesters broke into the Ministry of Education building as a firm declaration of their protest against the curriculum revisions enacted by the Ministry. The curriculum went into effect on August 1st despite the oppositions. However, the protest shows no signs of ending. The protesters claim that they will not stop until the new syllabus is withdrawn completely.
On July 30th, a 20-year-old young protester, Lin Kuan-Hua, was found having committed suicide at home. The initial cause was alleged to be chronic depression combined with stress Lin faced from prosecution for breaking in to Ministry building. However, evidences revealed later showed that it was because of peer pressure from fallout with other student protesters.
On July 30th, camera captured 17-year-old protest, Chao Tien-Kuan, wrestling with his parents at the scene of a protest in front of the national legislative building. His parents arrived to retrieve their son, but, instead, Chao yelled at his parents and physically assaulted them. “This is my glory moment! What did you do for this country? Go die and leave me alone!” shouted Chao as he punches his father in the head.
The still-on-going protests are sponsored by pan-green coalition in Taiwan. DPP, the main political opposition party in Taiwan, admits to supplying “material goods” to protestors. Black Island Youth, a youth organization that allies with DPP camp, provided training and false information to the students. Taiwan Solidarity Union party, also an ally of DPP, allowed protestors to use the party’s offices as meeting rooms.
The opposition to course content revision alleged that the decision was done with improper procedure, but the same procedure has been carried out for decades fully adhering to law, even during the time when DPP was the ruling party from 2000 to 2008. Moreover, the revisions can still be repealed in the future through legal legislative processes. Instead, the anti-revision protestors choose to hold violent demonstrations at this time before Taiwan’s upcoming presidential and legislative general election next January.
Most critics believe the DPP camp intends to gain public support again from this anti-revision protest by following the Sun Flower Movement model that student protestors built last year in 2014. To Taiwanese public, these student-led movements bear striking similarity to mainland China’s notorious Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. The signs of this emerging nationwide chaos are the deepest concern in the eyes of many parents on the island now.
