An old saying in China Mainland not long ago, say 1940s of my parents days, was told like this: a lying-in woman has already set one of her feet into a coffin, her yet-to-born baby as well.  Why was that?  I believe it was due to lacking adequate obstetericians but relying mostly on midwives, lacking modern sanitation, and so on.  Attached below is a touching story about a legendary obsteterician with great philanthropy during that time of hardship: Dr Lin Qiaozhi.
