Angry Outbursts Affect Health for A Week

Researchers indicate that an access of rage on the part of an individual can have an adverse effect on their physical health for up to a week. According to a recent report in the UK Independent, new studies show that outbursts of anger can lead to a rise in blood pressure, and that if the cause recurs over the following seven days, pressure will soar again. “Even after a week, there is no sign of it coming down.”

Writers of a study published in the most recent Journal of Psychophysiology indicate that anger is linked to a high risk of heart disease and other health issues. Their research shows that persons scoring highly on psychological tests for anger and hostility also show an accelerated trend towards hardening of the arteries. One theory in this respect is that stress hormones cause a constriction of blood vessels which leads to higher blood pressure and accelerated pulse rates. Earlier studies, however, have suggested that these effects dissipate after a row or argument is over.

Researchers at the University of California and Columbia University conducted laboratory studies of the effects of anger on a group of volunteers. They state that, “If cardiovascular reactions harm the cardiovascular system, then incidents that cause stress are likely to continue to cause harm even after quite some time.”
