陳總統出訪未明 Chen Stopover Unclear
陳水扁總統下星期出訪尼加拉瓜，計劃過境美國，不過美方今天仍然沒有肯定答覆，雙方將繼續協商。華府消息人士今天表示，台北方面早已向美國申請過境，但是過去一個多星期，碰上聖誕節與元旦兩個連續假期，所以進展緩慢。不過，相關單位表示，只要總統專機在台北時間元月八日起飛，當天過境美國，仍然可以及時趕上十日就職大典。
President Chen Shuibian will travel to Nicaragua next week and plans to make a transit stop in the USA en route. As of today, however, American officials have yet to respond positively to Taiwan‘s request and negotiations are continuing between the two governments. A Washington source today indicated that Taiwan’s stopover request had been received some time ago, but that progress in processing it had been slowed by the Christmas and New Year holidays that intervened over the last week. Official sources have slated nonetheless that as long as the official plane departs Taiwan on January 8th and transits the USA on the same day, the presidential party will be able to reach Nicaragua in time for the inaugural ceremonies on January 10th.
美國今天為前總統福特舉行喪禮，聯邦政府不上班，但是我方仍和美方進行了臨時會面協商，然而整套方案依舊沒有敲定，換句話說，陳水扁究竟在哪裡過境，沒有定案。台北傳出消息，說朝向過境洛杉磯規劃。但是華府消息人士表示，洛杉磯不是選項，仍待雙方繼續協商。
Taiwan representatives are holding unscheduled talks with American officials today even though all American federal offices are closed in honor of the state funeral being held for former President Gerald Ford. As has often been the case in the past, however, the final itinerary has yet to be confirmed, which means that it is as yet unclear exactly where on US territory the presidential plane will be landing. Reports have surfaced in Taipei that Los Angeles is a likely transit point, but as Washington sources state that Los Angeles is not among the available options, it will be necessary to await the outcome of further discussions.
