Thank-you for Not Smoking

在5月31日世界無菸日(World No Smoking Day)前夕，美國反菸團體全力推動禁止在電影中出現吸菸畫面。美國肺科協會(American Lung Association)30日發表聲明表示，吸菸的畫面應該完全被摒棄在電影內容之外，特別是那些為兒童、青少年以及一般觀眾所製作的電影。

On the eve of this year’s May 31^st World No Smoking Day, anti-smoking groups in the USA launched an all-out campaign to ban scenes of smoking from movies. The American Lung Association (ALA) issued a statement calling for the complete exclusion of smoking from filmed entertainment, particularly from films intended for children, teenagers and general audiences.

美國電影的分級制度是依照內容情節中涉及性、暴力、語言以及毒品的程度來分類。美國肺科協會主張，電影中如果有出現吸菸畫面，就應該被列入不適合17歲以下青少年觀看的級別。面對反菸團體的壓力，具影響力的美國電影協會(Motion Picture Association of America：MPAA)曾在5月10日宣佈，不會禁止電影中出現吸菸畫面，但在未來進行電影分級時，會考量這個因素。

The American rating system categorizes movies according to their portrayal of such factors as sexuality, violence, language and drug use. The American Lung Association is recommending that any movie containing scenes of smoking should be rated as inappropriate for viewers under the age of 17. In response to pressures from anti-smoking groups, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), announced on May 10^th that it would not ban smoking from movies but would in future take it into account when rating movies.

根據美國肺科協會的調查，有52％父母不吸菸的吸菸青少年，之所以會開始吸菸是因為受電影影響。

A survey conducted by the ALA has shown that some 52% of teenagers who smoke but whose parents do not initially started smoking due to the influence of movies they had seen.
