Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today we have a travel lesson,
and we are going to visit somewhere in the United States called Texas.
So, the name of our lesson is "Visiting Texas," right?
Texas is one of the biggest states in all of the United States.
There’s a lot to see and do there,
and there’s a lot of interesting history.
We’ll get into a lot of that in our lesson today.
Right. If you look at a map of the United States,
then Texas will be on the bottom, in the south, about in the middle.
And it’s a big state right next to the country of Mexico. In fact,
a long time ago, it used to be part of the country of Mexico.
Today, though, it’s a part of the United States,
and people in Texas love being Americans, right?
They do! If you visit Texas,
you will see lots of American flags. Now, friends,
let’s go on to our Find It question.
You’ll find the answer to it in our lesson.
Here is that question:
What did Terra take a picture with?
What did Terra take a picture with?
Friends, remember our friend Terra?
She likes to travel around the world,
visit new places, and try different things.
And then we’re lucky,
because Terra comes on to Greg’s program
to share all about the things she does and sees.
And of course,
she takes a lot of pictures, right?
Now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us today’s keywords.
Terra
"I visited the Space Center Houston."
"I also saw a lot of moon rocks."
"They have the world’s largest collection of them there."
"I learned a lot about the cowboy culture of Texas."
"You can learn a lot about cowboy skills at one."
Hello, Terra. Welcome.
Thanks, Greg. I just got back from Texas.
Fun! Where did you go first?
I went to Houston.
It’s the fourth largest city in the U.S.
I visited the Space Center Houston.
Very cool!
What did you do there?
We took a tour and learned all about people in space,
and I also saw a lot of moon rocks.
They have the world’s largest collection of them there.
I’d like to see those!
When Terra is on Greg’s program,
sometimes she’s getting ready for a future trip,
but sometimes she tells us about a trip she’s already taken,
like today, right?
And we start with Greg welcoming her by saying the word “welcome.”
If someone visits your home or visits your school
and you want them to feel at home, you can say “welcome.”
Exactly. Well, Terra just got back from Texas —
the state of Texas in the U.S.
“I just got back from Texas” is what she says,
and that’s today’s calendar phrase:

“I just got back from Texas.”
“I just got back from Texas.”
Howdy, y’all!
Hey, you sound like a cowboy.
I just got back from Texas.
And you’re wearing a cowboy hat.
I just got back from Texas.
And you smell like a horse!
I just got back from Texas.
Isn’t Texas really, really hot?
Yes, that’s why I came back. Oh!
“I just got back from Texas.”
“I just got back from Texas.”

Greg is happy to hear about Terra’s travels to Texas,
and he wants to know where she went first, right?
Well, Terra tells us that she went to the city of Houston, Texas,
and we learn that this city is a very large city.
It’s the fourth largest city in the United States, right?
So, there are only three larger cities in the country.
And while she was there, she visited the Space Center Houston.
Now what exactly do we mean by “space” here, Esther?
Right. Here, the word “space” means
we are talking about the Earth, the planets, the moon,
the stars, and the sun. So this is a place where they explore space.
Yeah, so space is outside of the Earth.
You need to fly very high up, higher than most airplanes, to get to space.
And Houston has a lot to do with space,
because lots of special rockets or spaceships are sent off from Houston.
Alright.
Sometimes people say “outer space” when they talk about this space we’re talking about.
Well, Greg thinks it’s very cool,
and he wants to know what Terra did at the Houston Space Center.
She says, “We took a tour and learned all about people in space,”
and she saw a lot of moon rocks.
Moon rocks. First, let’s talk about the moon.
The moon is a light you see in the sky at night.
It’s the one that’s white or yellow.
The moon circles around the Earth.
Yeah, it’s actually a big giant rock floating out in space.
A rock is something hard.
You might see lots of rocks if you go out on a hike or in the mountains.
Right, and the moon has rocks as well.
So these are the moon rocks. And Terra tells us that
this place, Houston Space Center,
has the world’s largest collection of moon rocks.
A collection is a place or a gathering of lots of the same kind of thing.
You might have a collection of baseball cards or a collection of dolls.
Well, friends, it’s time to go to Sonia to learn more about that word.
They have the world’s largest collection of them there.
加上 -tion 是名詞 collection(收藏品)。
Connect
加上 -tion 是名詞 connection(連結)。
Prepare
加上 -tion 是名詞 preparation(準備)。
Educate
加上 -tion 是名詞 education(教育)的意思。
Thank you for that useful teaching, Sonya.
Esther, do you have any collections?
Well, I used to collect kitchen items,
like plates and pots,
but then we ran out of space,
so I don’t have any more new collections. How about you, Garrett?
I’ve had a few in my life,
like baseball cards,
or even stamps — you know,
the things you put on letters to send them.
My dad had a stamp collection as well.
Friends, now it’s time for us to take a break.
Don’t go away. We’ll be right back after this.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English, that’s the way!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Now, many kids have dreams of going out to space.
The kind of job that does this is called an astronaut.
Right. An astronaut is someone who goes into space,
and some people can even live in space for six months or a year.
There is a space center in outer space.
That’s right!
So if you want to learn more about this,
you can go to Houston and visit the space center there.
Now friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
Then I went up to Fort Worth,
to the Fort Worth Stockyards.
That sounds interesting.
It was! I learned a lot about the cowboy culture of Texas,
and I took a picture with a longhorn.
See?
Huh!
Wow!
He really does have long horns.
I know!
I also went to a rodeo. That was so much fun!
Rodeos are very exciting.
You can learn a lot about cowboy skills at one.
Well, Terra’s journey in Texas continued.
She didn’t just stay in Houston.
She also went to the city of Fort Worth, right?
This city is called Fort Worth because a long time ago,
there were probably forts there.
Right. Now this city is right next to another city
that is maybe a little more well-known, called Dallas.
They’re right next to each other.
But Tara went to Fort Worth to see the Fort Worth Stockyards.
Garrett, this word "stockyard" is a special word.
It’s made up of two words: stock and yard.
Can you tell us what it means?
Sure. "Stock" is something you store away — you keep it,
usually because you want to sell it in the future.
And a "yard" is a big empty space used for some purpose.
So a stockyard is a space or maybe even a building
where people would store things
that they will sell in the future.
Right. And Greg thinks that this place sounds interesting.
Tara tells us that she learned about the cowboy culture of Texas.
Ah, yes. Friends, do you know that word "cowboy"?
If you hear that word,
you might be thinking of fun movies called western movies.
Long ago in this part of the U.S.,
there were people called cowboys.
They rode horses around and didn’t like to follow the rules.
Right. Cowboys often wear boots, a big hat, and jeans.
And if you go to Texas,
there’s a lot of cowboy culture still around.
Oh, friends — did you find the answer to our Find It question?
Our question was: What did Terra take a picture with?
She took a picture with a longhorn.
Yes, a longhorn! And she even shows her picture to Greg, right?
Greg is impressed and sees that the longhorn really does have long horns.
Well, friends, a longhorn is kind of like a type of cow,
but with really long horns on its head.
Greg is amazed. He says “Wow!”
And he says, “He really does have long horns.”
Sonia, can you help us with this word “does”?
Tara
Greg
He really does have long horns.
He really does play the piano well.
She really does care about her friends.
They really do understand the topic.
Thank you, Sonia.
Tara tells us that she also went to a rodeo.
Garrett, what is a rodeo?
Well, a rodeo is like an event. People go to a rodeo to see all sorts of different activities and shows.
Many of these involve animals like cows or longhorns.
Cowboys ride on them and try to stay on,
or use a special rope to try and catch some of these animals.
Right. Rodeos are very special activities. You can’t find them in every state,
but you can find rodeos in Texas.
Yeah, rodeos are very exciting, and you can learn a lot about cowboy skills.
When cowboys lived all around the United States and around Texas,
they needed those skills to live.
And this word “skill” is a very useful word for us to know.
A skill is being able to do something.
You might have art skills or music skills.
Or if you are a student, you need to have study skills —
you need to know how to study.
Yeah, it’s the things you’re good at, like throwing a ball
or knowing how to answer a difficult math question.
Well, friends, it’s time now to look back at what we learned and review our keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
Space
Space – Janice wants to go to space.
Rock
Rock – These rocks are big and hard.
Collection
Collection – Do you want to see my coin collection?
Cowboy
Cowboy – Cowboys are good at many things.
Skill
Skill – He has good writing skills.
Friends, your English skills are improving. Good job!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s keywords are: space, rock, collection, cowboy, and skill.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
Jack is a... He wears cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.
You got it – Jack is a cowboy.
Next – _____ is full of stars. This is a place.
You’re right – Space is full of stars.
Next – He has a large _____ of postcards. He collects postcards, so...
He has a large collection of postcards.
Next – You need _____ to use this tool.
You’re right – You need skill to use this tool.
Last one – She climbed on top of the _____.
That’s correct – She climbed on top of the rock.
Friends, that’s all for today. I hope to see you again here at Your Turn.
Hello, Tara. Welcome.
Thanks, Greg. I just got back from Texas.
Fun! Where did you go first?
I went to Houston. It’s the fourth-largest city in the U.S.
I visited the Space Center Houston.

Huh! Wow!
He really does have long horns.
I know! I also went to a rodeo. That was so much fun.
Rodeos are very exciting. You can learn a lot about cowboy skills at one.
One, two, yahoo! Let’s review.
Hey Hazel, have you ever been to Texas?
Oh yeah, Texas is one of my favorite states.
Great. What can you tell us about Texas?
Well, one thing is that Texas has some very special rocks.
Rocks? What’s so special about the rocks there?
They’re from the moon.
The moon?!
Yes, the Space Center Houston has the world’s largest collection of moon rocks.
That’s interesting! What else can we find in Texas?
A lot of cowboys and a lot of cows.
Cowboys and cows — that makes sense.
Yes, Texas is famous for longhorn cows.
Longhorn cows?
Yes, the longhorn cows have very long horns.
That makes sense. Texas is also famous for rodeos.
Hazel, have you ever been to a rodeo?
Yes! Rodeos are very exciting.
You can learn a lot about cowboy skills and cowboy culture.
Sounds like fun!
Oh yeah, Texas is a lot of fun.
Hey, you should go there.
I think I will — but not today.
No, not today.
Hello, Grandpa.
Are you ready?
Ready for what?
Ready for today’s questions.
Of course! I’m always ready, and I remember everything.
Okay then, here’s the first question:
What did Tara see at the Space Center Houston?
She saw spaceships.
What else?
She saw a rock.
That’s right — but what kind of rock?
Special rocks.
What kind of special rocks? Let’s see... a moon...
Cow rocks?
No — moon rocks!
Oh! Moon rocks!
Right! She saw a lot of moon rocks.
Yes, Space Center Houston has the biggest collection of moon rocks.
That’s great — if you like moo moo moon rocks.
So Grandpa, what skills do you have?
Well, that’s easy. I have the skill of answering questions.
Oh? Why is that?
Because I remember everything.
That’s a good answer!
I knew I always have good answers.
Oh well... sometimes it’s a skill.
Well, long ago there really were cowboys living all around the U.S., especially in Texas.
They had difficult lives, but today you can see some of the fun parts of cowboy culture in Texas.
Right. If you ever get a chance to visit Texas, and if there is a rodeo on, you should go to a rodeo.
You could even enjoy a western movie — these are movies about cowboys.
I recommend Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Thanks, Garrett. That’s good to know.
And you can even buy a pair of cowboy boots.
Well, friends, that’s it for today.
We’ll see you again tomorrow, right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello, everyone! Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is travel,
and our title is Visiting Texas.
Texas is one of the states in the United States, friends.
Do you remember how many states there are?
The answer is fifty—oh!
There are fifty different states in the United States, and Texas is one of the largest states.
That’s right!
In yesterday’s lesson, we learned some of the things
you might see if you go there.
First of all, what if you went to Houston, Texas,
the fourth largest city in the United States?
What would you see there?
Well, you could go to the Space Center,
and there you will see the world’s largest collection
of moon rocks. You can learn all about
what it would be like to fly up into space
and be an astronaut.
Old friends, what if you went to the city of Fort Worth?
Then you can go to a rodeo,
and there you will learn all about cowboy culture and see
cowboy skills in action.
That would be fun! I would love to learn some of them too.
You could also see the Fort Worth Stockyards if you went there.
O friends, it’s time now to know our Find It question.
Our question is:
What did Sarah see on the ground?
What did Sarah see on the ground?
What was it?
Well, I’m sure she’ll let us know in our conversation.
Now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us
today’s key words.
It’s not nearly as crowded.
Sam
Let’s find some shade.
Or we could ride a horse.
Zara
What’s that on the ground?
It’s just a lizard.
Wouldn’t it be fun to go hiking in Texas?
I guess so. Why Texas?
Because we could hike in the second largest canyon in the U.S.
It’s pretty like the Grand Canyon,
but it’s not nearly as crowded.
What’s it called?
It’s called Palo Duro Canyon.
Wow, look at the view!
What’s that rock called?
That’s the Lighthouse.
It’s so big and tall,
and the desert is so beautiful here.
It’s also hot. Let’s find some shade.
Today, we see Sam and Sarah talking.
They’re not just talking, though—
they’re wondering too, right?
They’re wondering about what activities,
or things, they can do in Texas.
And Sam starts off by wondering if it would be fun
to go hiking in Texas.
Yeah, they’re not in Texas right now,
but they are wondering.
And Sarah says, “I guess so. But why Texas?”
Because Sam tells us that you could hike in the second
largest canyon in the United States.
So let’s talk about what a canyon is.
A canyon is kind of like a big hole in the ground, right?
Now, a canyon often has to do with a river.
We think of a valley or a place deep in the ground
that usually is made by a river.
Yeah, it’s lower than the ground all around it, and it goes down.
So canyons can be fun places to explore.
And here, you can find the second largest canyon in the U.S.
I’ll let you think about what the largest one is, right?
It’s in the state of Arizona, called the Grand Canyon.
Now earlier, we heard the word second.
Sonia, can you help us with more words like first,
second, and third?
Same 說:
Because we could hike in the second largest canyon in the U.S.
The third highest mountain is almost 30,000 feet tall.
Evan is the fourth tallest person in his class.
Evan
Who is the second richest person in the world?
Thank you, Sonia.
And Sam tells us that this canyon in Texas is pretty,
like the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Nevada, right?
It is impressive. The Grand Canyon is huge!
It would take days to walk all the way around it.
And it sounds like this one in Texas is pretty big too.
We learn that the canyon in Texas
is not nearly as crowded as the canyon in Arizona and Nevada, right?
It’s not nearly as crowded.
Now, this phrase not nearly as means “not even close to”—you can’t even compare them.
So, there are a lot fewer people at this canyon in Texas,
called Palo Duro Canyon.
And that is the name of this place. And it sounds like now
Sarah and Sam are actually there—well,
they’re imagining that they’re there.
And they look out at the view all around them,
and they want to know what the rock is they’re looking at.
Now we learn that it’s called The Lighthouse.
It’s big and tall—right, just like a lighthouse.
And the desert around them is so beautiful. Well,
like many deserts, it’s very hot.
So they want to look for some shade.
If you are in a place where there is a lot of sunlight,
you might want to look for shade.
This is where the sun doesn’t hit your skin directly, right?
If it’s bright and sunny out, and you find a tree,
there will be shade underneath it.
Shade is the area in the shadow where there’s not as much light.
So now, they’re going to go and look for some shade.
And we need to go and take a break.
So don’t go away—we’ll be right back!
🎵 Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English,
Every day, every day, that’s the way! 🎵
Welcome back to the show, everyone!
Esther, you were telling me earlier that
you’ve been to the Grand Canyon before, right?
We had some family friends, and their family and our family went there together.
We flew into Phoenix, Arizona,
and then drove to the Grand Canyon from there.
Was it grand?
It was grand!
If something is grand, it means
it’s very large and amazing, right?
I got to go there a few years ago too,
and it was very impressive.
Well, let’s get back to Texas and our conversation.
Can we hike to The Lighthouse?
Sure! It’s about a six-mile hike.
Uh... it’s too hot for that.
Okay, we can take a shorter hike, or we could ride a horse.
Seeing everything from the back of a horse would be fun.
Oh! What’s that on the ground?
It’s just a lizard. There are some around here.
It’s so interesting!
Isn’t that a great place?
Yes, I would love to go there and explore more.
Well, remember earlier our friends saw
a big rock called The Lighthouse.
And Sarah wants to know if they can hike there, right?
And when you go hiking,
it means you are going on a path out in nature.
Sometimes hikes can be long,
and this one is about six miles long.
Alright—a six-mile hike. Now, that’s not a short hike,
but it’s definitely doable, or something you can finish
in about a day or an afternoon.
Right. Well, it’s six miles there to The Lighthouse,
and remember—it’s six miles back to where they are.
Yeah, probably.
It is! Well, six-mile is a word with a line in the middle
called a dash.
Here’s Sonia to explain this some more:
Sarah
Sam
It’s about a six-mile hike.
It’s about a two-hour drive to the ocean.
I took a 14-hour flight to visit my parents.
We take a 30-minute walk after dinner every day.
Thank you so much, Sonia!
Well, Sam told us that it is a six-mile hike to The Lighthouse rock.
Does Sarah want to do that?
No, Sarah does not want to do that.
She tells us that it’s too hot for that.
And friends, it’s too hot for that
is also today’s calendar phrase!

It’s too hot for that.
It’s too hot for that.
Let’s hike up the mountain.
It’s too hot for that.
Let’s walk around the lake.
It’s too hot for that.
Let’s climb on the rocks.
It’s too hot for that.
Let’s find some shade.
Good idea! I’m all for that. Hmm...
It’s too hot for that.
It’s too hot for that.

Well, they’re not going to do that six-mile hike,
but it’s not the only hike they can do, right?
Sam says, “We can take—or we can go on—a shorter hike.”
Maybe only two or three miles instead of six miles.
Or there’s another option: they could ride a horse.
A horse is an animal that many people will sit on and ride
to go from one place to another, right?
If you look at history—what happened in the past—
many horses were used,
or many people sat on them to fight in wars
or just to get where they needed to go.
Horses can run farther and faster than a person can.
And Sarah says,
“Seeing everything from the back of a horse would be fun.”
But then she says
that there is something on the ground. She asks,
“What’s that on the ground?”
The ground is, well,
what you’re standing on—the bottom,
where there’s dirt, a road,
or maybe even the floor of your house.
Right, and Sarah sees something on the ground
when she is looking down.
And that leads us to today’s answer to our Find It question.
Our question is:
What did Sarah see on the ground?
She saw a lizard!
Ooh, that sounds fun.
Lizards are animals that are what we call cold-blooded,
so they need to lie out in the sun during the daytime.
Lizards have short legs and a long tail.
And yes, they need sunlight.
Yes, they do.
Well, our friends enjoyed exploring
this special desert—in their minds.
And now they’re back home.
Sam asks,
“Isn’t that a great place?”
And Sarah agrees. She says,
“Yes, I would love to go there and explore more.”
If you explore a place,
it means you want to visit different areas
and learn more about it.
Right!
And friends, even if you can’t go to a place yourself,
you can still enjoy it in your mind.
Imagine being there.
Imagine what you would see—right?
Just like Sam and Sarah.
Now it’s time for us to go and review our keywords!
Here’s your first keyword for today:
nearly
He was nearly late for work.
shade
He sat in the shade under the tree.
horse
Most cowboys ride horses.
ground
Let’s sit on the ground.
lizard
Lizards can move fast.
Well, friends, those are your keywords for today.
Keep on practicing them! And now—it’s your turn!
The keywords for today are:
nearly, shade, horse, ground, and lizard.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence!
She rode away on her ______.
→ This is a big animal, correct?
→ She rode away on her horse.
It’s much cooler in the ______.
→ You’re outside. Where can you go if it’s too hot?
→ You got it! It’s much cooler in the shade.
The ______ is wet from the rain.
→ You’re right! The ground is wet from the rain.
Jim has a ______ for a pet.
→ This is a small animal.
→ Good job! Jim has a lizard for a pet.
It’s ______ time to go.
→ Great answer! It’s nearly time to go.
But come again tomorrow for Your Turn!
Wouldn’t it be fun to go hiking in Texas?
I guess so. Why Texas?
Because we could hike in the second largest canyon in the U.S.
It’s pretty like the Grand Canyon,
but it’s not nearly as crowded.
What’s it called?
It’s called Palo Duro Canyon.
Wow, look at the view!

And the desert is so beautiful here.
It’s also hot. Let’s find some shade.
Can we hike to The Lighthouse?
Sure.
Yes! I would love to go there and explore more.
One, two—let’s review!
Hi, everyone! Let’s talk about Texas!
Yahoo! Texas sounds like a great place.
It is—and it’s a great place for hiking.
Hiking?
Yes, you can hike in a large canyon, like the Grand Canyon.
Well, it’s pretty much like the Grand Canyon,
but it’s not nearly as crowded.
Wow! That sounds great.
What about the view?
Well, one place has a special rock. It’s big and tall.
What’s it called?
It’s called The Lighthouse.
And you can hike to it.
That sounds fun.
It’s a six-mile hike.
And remember—Texas is very hot,
and there’s not much shade.
Oh... maybe we could take a shorter hike or ride a horse instead.
Yeah! That would be fun... but not for the horse.
True!
So, what else can we see in Texas?
You can see lizards.
Texas has lizards?
Oh yeah! Texas has a lot of interesting things.
It’s a great place to explore.
I should visit Texas!
Yeah, you really should—but not today.
In today’s lesson, we talked about going to a desert.
A desert is a place where it almost never rains.
Esther, do you like going to the desert?
I actually don’t like going to the desert
because it’s very cold in the morning and in the evening,
and during the daytime, it can get very hot.
Right! It’s hard to live in the desert—
but they can be beautiful, with some amazing animals.
That’s right.
And if you ever get a chance to go to Texas,
try to go and visit this canyon.
That would be fun.
Well, friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow
with another lesson all about Texas—
that’s right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye! 👋

Hello friends,
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
We’re back with more travel,
and the name of our lesson is “Visiting Texas,” right?
This is our third day of this month’s travel lesson,
as we go to one of America’s biggest states —
a state with a lot to see, right?
Yesterday, we heard that you can go to a special canyon in Texas,
and there you can even ride a horse.
You can!
I’ve never ridden a horse, but I would love to learn.
It sounds convenient — horses can run fast and far,
especially in the desert.
Right, and Sam wanted to go on a six-mile hike,
but Sara thought that was too long.
She didn’t want to be in the heat for such a long time.
Well, friends, we’ll learn more today
and try to find our Find It answer.
The question is:
What food is Texas famous for?
What food is Texas famous for?
Listen carefully to find the answer.
Now let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
Texas is the second largest state in the United States.
Texans like their big state, and some have a larger-than-life attitude.
They are proud of their state’s history.
Texas is famous for its barbecue, which is usually slow-cooked meat.
They add American ingredients to Mexican food.
Howdy, y’all!
Texas is the second largest state in the United States.
At 268,597 square miles,
Texas is twice as big as Japan.
If Texas were a country,
it would be the 40th largest in land size.
Texans like their big state,
and some have a larger-than-life attitude.
They say everything is bigger in Texas!
They drive big trucks and wear big hats.
Even the state’s capital is bigger
than the United States capital in Washington, D.C.
So over these lessons, we’ve described Texas as a state
in the United States.
But what exactly is a state?
Well, it’s kind of like a small country within a bigger country.
They make their own laws and have their own culture.
Right, it’s part of the United States, yes.
The United States is made up of 50 different states.
And we learned that Texas is the second largest state.
It is very big — at 268,597 square miles.
It’s twice as big as Japan.
And if it were a country,
it would be the 40th largest in land size. Wow!
Let’s go to Sonia.
If Texas were a country, it would be the 40th largest in land size.
If I were a teacher, I would try to understand my students.
If Dan were an actor, he would act in an action movie.
If my friends were here, we would hang out all day.
Thank you, Sonya.
Alright friends, people from Texas are called Texans.
We hear they have quite the attitude, right?
An attitude is your way of thinking.
And some Texans think that everything is larger in Texas.
Yes, they have a larger-than-life attitude there.
They think they are great,
and they say everything is bigger in Texas.
And everything is bigger in Texas is also today’s Calendar Phrase:

Everything is bigger in Texas.
Everything is bigger in Texas.
Hey, welcome to Texas!
This place is really big.
Yes, everything is bigger in Texas.
Your hat is really big!
Yes, everything is bigger in Texas.
Those rocks are really big!
Yes, everything is bigger in Texas.
Is everything really bigger?
No, I’m not bigger!
Everything is bigger in Texas.
Everything is bigger in Texas.

People in Texas
drive big trucks and wear big hats.
Even the state’s capitol —
that capitol is bigger than the country’s capital.
Now, this capital here doesn’t mean the main city in the state, right?
It means the place where the government holds their meetings —
yeah, the building where that happens.
OK friends, let’s keep watching.
Texas is known for its friendly and proud people.
They’re proud of their state’s history.
Texas is the only state in the U.S. that used to be its own country.
Many people in Texas love to show off their state’s busy cities, beautiful countryside, and large deserts to visitors.
Some people have lived in the state for a long time, others have moved there from different states or countries.
This mix of cultures makes Texas a fun place to live.
We hear that Texans — or people from Texas — are friendly and proud.
They’re happy to be from Texas, right?
And they are proud of their state’s history.
History is all the things that happened in the past.
Well, we hear some about it:
德州是美國唯一曾經是自己的國家的州。
Texas is the only state in the U.S. that used to be its own country.
But many people in Texas love to show off their state’s busy cities.
如果你喜歡「show off」,
If you like to show off, you want people to know about what you’re doing,
what you’re seeing, or what you’re wearing.
Sonya, can you help us with this phrase: show off?
Many people in Texas love to show off their state’s busy cities.
Eric is showing off his basketball skills.
Eric
The boy showed off his new toy to his classmates.
You don’t have to show off for people to like you.
Thank you, Sonia.
Yes, they like to show off their beautiful cities —
the large cities, the countryside, and their deserts. That’s all right!
We hear that some people have lived in Texas for a long time,
but others have moved there from other states and countries.
And that makes a mix of cultures, right?
Because when people move to a place,
they bring all their traditions, their foods,
and their ways of living to that new place.
I’ve even heard there’s a special kind of food in Texas —
it’s a mixture of Texan food and Vietnamese food.
You can go to Houston to find it. That sounds great!
I know of Tex-Mex food —
that’s American Texan food and Mexican food.
And that sounds delicious as well.
It sure does!
Let’s take a quick break, friends.
We’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s Talk in English
Let’s Talk in English
Let’s take ten minutes every day, every day!
Welcome back to the show, everyone!
We hear that Texans are very proud of the place they’re from.
What are you proud of about the place where you live?
Right — is there a place people like to visit?
Or maybe your city is famous for a special food or landmark?
Yeah! What’s great about the place that you can be proud of?
Friends, let’s keep watching today’s lesson.
Food is a big part of Texas culture.
Texas is famous for its barbecue,
which is usually slow-cooked meat — especially beef.
Another popular food is Tex-Mex,
which adds American ingredients to Mexican food.
You can find delicious Tex-Mex dishes all over Texas.
Many Texans enjoy spicy food, too.
In Texas’s big cities, such as Houston, Dallas, and Austin,
you can find food from all over the world.
Well, everyone’s favorite thing to talk about
when it comes to culture is special foods.
That’s right!
And we learn that food is a big part of Texas — or Texan — culture.
And finding our Find It answer is a big part of our show!
What food is Texas famous for?
It’s famous for its barbecue, yes!
Barbecue is when you take meat and cook it over fire or a grill,
often with lots of spices.
Yes, and barbecue in Texas — and some other places in the U.S. —
is cooked very slowly, often with smoke.
And it is popular in Texas, especially if you’re eating beef.
Beef is a kind of meat from cows —
just like pork is a kind of meat from pigs.
Meat is the food that comes from animals that we then eat.
Well, another popular food is Tex-Mex.
Esther talked about that earlier, right?
This is when you add American ingredients —
or things used in American food —
to Mexican food, or food that is from Mexico.
Right!
So a popular kind of dish is something like fajitas.
American means things or people from the United States of America.
Right — Garrett is American!
Yes! We can find lots of delicious Tex-Mex dishes in Texas,
and many people like spicy food there too.
Right! You can go to the big cities there, find great food,
and learn a lot — just like we did!
Let’s review our keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
state
There are fifty states in the U.S.
attitude
She has a good attitude.
history
I learned about the history of the city.
meat
Beef is his favorite meat.
American
He drives an American car.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. You’re doing a great job!
And now it’s your turn!
The keywords for today are:
state, attitude, history, meat, and American.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence!
First one:
Did you put any ____ in the soup?
Good job!
Did you put any meat in the soup?
Next:
Which ____ are you from? Ohio? California?
You got it!
Which state are you from?
Next:
Do you have any ____ money?
What’s another way to say U.S. money?
Correct!
Do you have any American money?
Next:
What’s the ____ of this house?
You’re right!
What’s the history of this house?
Last one:
Having a good ____ is important.
Great job!
Having a good attitude is important.
Great job guessing all the words correctly!
Don’t forget to come again for Your Turn.
Howdy, y’all!

Texans say everything is bigger in Texas.
They drive big trucks and wear big hats.
The people there are friendly and proud.

Texas used to be a country — interesting!
Some people have lived in Texas for a long time,
but others have moved there from other states and even other countries.
So Texas is a mix of cultures.
Sounds like a lot of fun!
It really is.
And a big part of Texas culture is the food — oh yeah!
It’s famous for its barbecue — mmm!
Slow-cooked beef.
Another popular food is Tex-Mex — oh yeah!
Mexican food with American ingredients — mmm!
Texans also like spicy food,
and in Texas you can find food from all over the world.
I’m going to Texas!
Me too!
But not today.
But not today.
Hello and welcome back, friends!
My name is Cela, and this is What’s Next.
Let’s look at some strange droids and try to guess what will happen next.
Are you ready? Let’s go!
What have we here?
I think it’s in America — a river, a man, and a horse.
What is the man doing in the river?
Well, first of all, that man looks like a cowboy.
So what is a cowboy doing in the river?
Did he lose something?
Maybe he’s washing his hands? Hmm...
Well, now the cowboy looks happy.
He is excited about something.
What is he holding — a bucket?
No — a plate?
I think he found something in the water.
Do you think he lost his glasses or his keys?
Why would a cowboy be so happy in the water? Strange!
What will happen next?
Aha! The man is holding a gold rock.
Oh — it’s gold!
The cowboy was looking for gold!
That’s right! Many years ago,
people would look for gold in the river.
Gold is valuable, and people like to be rich.
Now I understand why that cowboy’s so happy — he’s rich!
Looking for gold is not easy.
Many people look for gold deep in the earth.
Other people find little pieces of gold in the rivers.
I would like to have something made of gold someday.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next.
Well, Texas is a big state,
and that means there’s a lot to see and do.
And if you go to Texas,
be sure to try some of that Tex-Mex food.
Have some great barbecue,
watch a funny show in the capital of Austin,
and be sure to enjoy your time, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us,
and we hope that you’ll join us again tomorrow!
That’s right — here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
