hello friends
my name is Anne Marie
and today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
i’m David and this is Studio Classroom
we have a very
serious question to start our lesson off with
today. Are you ready?
i think so. Okay, here
we go. Is it easy or
hard for you to admit you were wrong about something?
oh boy, Anne Marie,
let me tell you — it’s certainly not easy, but boy is it
relaxing.
oh really?
yes.
When I am trying to hold on to the idea
that I’m right and this person’s wrong,
my heart is so mixed up with all these emotions — thinking
of all these ways to argue with this person
and say “I’m right,
I’m right.” But if I just admit, “Ah,
you’re right. I’m wrong. I’m sorry,”
it just takes away all that stress and I can relax.
that’s very impressive. I have to tell you —
I’m not very often wrong.
i’m just kidding. It is very hard
for me to admit that I am wrong.
that’s why I said that.
but friends, we’re talking all about how
important it is
to admit you are wrong in a summary of a book
called Think Again. Let’s get right into our lesson.
Think Again
Discover the joy of realizing you are wrong
No one likes making mistakes,
but sometimes
mistakes can be stepping stones to achievements
that would have otherwise been impossible.
To learn from our mistakes,
we need to first recognize them as mistakes
and be willing to change our minds about them.
The book Think Again by Adam
Grant is designed to help people change their minds
when necessary
and convince others to do the same.
hi, I’m Jack。今天的 usage tip 是 no 加名詞、逗號 but 怎麼樣的句型。
它是由 no 加名詞來陳述一個被認為沒有人會喜歡的狀況,然後使用對等連接詞 but來反轉語意,強調該狀況仍然可能帶來一些有意義的結果。
這個結構的語意重點是放在 but之後,透過 but 的轉折,進而破除一些刻板印象。
來看個例句:
No student enjoys studying for exams, but it helps build discipline and knowledge for the future.
沒有學生喜歡為考試而讀書,但是考試有助於為未來建立紀律和知識。
alright, thank you so much Jack.
let’s get right into our lesson, friends. Discover the joy
of realizing you were wrong.
Well,
here, according to our writer,
already
you can have joy when you admit you’re wrong.
that’s right.
but we see here: No one likes making mistakes,
but
sometimes mistakes can be stepping stones to achievements
that would have otherwise been impossible.
alright, right there you saw our usage tip for today.
and there are a few terms from this sentence
we want to talk about. First,
we want to talk about what a stepping stone is.
here
we’re talking about
the idea that small things can help you reach a bigger goal.
that’s right.
when you’re taking a course and it’s very difficult,
each test, each piece of homework
is a stepping stone towards graduating —
one step at a time. Just like you walk and you take steps,
stepping stones help you move forward.
now we also see this word achievements here.
now, an achievement is a thing that you succeed at,
and usually
this is done through hard work.
that’s right. For example:
Winning the award was one of her greatest achievements.
alright, so these stepping stones
help you achieve things that otherwise
would be impossible.
Otherwise is another really good word, friends.
Otherwise just means in a different way or under
other conditions.
that’s right. For example:
You need to train hard,
otherwise you’ll never be able to run that marathon.
okay, let’s move on here to the next sentence, friends.
we see: To learn from our mistakes,
we need to first recognize them as mistakes
and be willing to change our minds about them.
let’s talk about the idea of changing your mind.
that’s right. It’s not like changing a
tire on a car where you take out one
and you put in the other — no,
no, no. If you change your mind,
it means that you decide something
different from what you thought before.
For example, oftentimes people
change their minds if a better idea comes along.
You had a certain opinion about things before,
and then maybe
there was evidence to convince you to think another way.
so
you change your mind. that’s right.
it’s impossible to accept something new
unless you put down something old, right?
that’s a really good point.
i think that’s going to be one of our key ideas for today.
we read on — the book Think Again by Adam
Grant is designed to help people
change their minds when necessary
and convince others to do the same.
this word convince —
very important word.
it means to make someone agree with you or
believe something.
okay. it can be hard to convince people of things sometimes.
maybe you try to convince your friend to go
out with you, or convince your friend
to try a new restaurant.
when you’re trying to convince someone, a lot of times
you have to argue with them or
explain things for a while.
that’s right.
people can try to convince you to do bad things too,
so you have to know what you believe and what you stand for.
i find that sometimes it can be hard
for my wife to convince her parents to take
new vitamins or
special
medical things. they kind of have their own ideas, right?
and a lot of people do
have their own ideas for a lot of different things.
so it can be really hard to change our
minds. we’re going to learn more
about this idea in just a moment.
so let’s get ready for our next reading.
Think Again
Grant argues that people form opinions relatively easily
and rarely change them.
instead, when people’s ideas are challenged,
they usually rush to defend their original views
or attack the opposite position.
Grant argues that people should act like scientists —
experimenting,
considering
all possible explanations, and questioning earlier beliefs.
this will allow them to make better decisions
and to be more
understanding of others with different beliefs.
我們先來看名詞 explanation,意思是解釋。
例如:
Gregory felt even more confused after hearing his father’s explanation of the equation.
Gregory 聽了父親對方程式的解釋後,感到更加困惑了。
或是:
I owe you an explanation after everything that has happened.
在發生了這一切之後,我欠你一個解釋。
它的形容詞是 explanatory,
譬如:
Read the explanatory paragraph carefully before asking more questions.
在提出更多問題之前,請仔細閱讀那段說明性的段落。
okay.
let’s talk more about this idea of convincing people and
forming opinions.
that’s the term we see here in this next sentence:
Grant argues that people form opinions relatively easily
and rarely change them.
so if you form an opinion,
it means that you create thoughts or certain beliefs
about something.
for example, people often
form opinions about things based on what they read or
hear in a podcast.
exactly.
so we have this verb form opinions.
you can also talk about changing your opinion.
Change is another verb we often use with the word opinion.
now we move on
here and see: instead, when people’s ideas are challenged,
they usually rush to defend their original views or attack
the opposite position.
that’s right. we have a number of really good words here.
first one is this thing of
a challenge.
now,
a challenge can be something that’s
difficult to do — that you’re trying to accomplish.
but here we see a different way of using it — the word
challenge as a verb. it means to dispute the truth or
idea of something.
exactly. for example:
She doesn’t like when people challenge her authority.
another word you can think of here, friends, is the idea of
questioning something.
if you’re challenging something,
you’re questioning it.
you’re asking, “Is this thing really true?”
that’s right.
another good phrase we see here is
rush to. if you rush to something,
it means that you’re trying to do it quickly, and
oftentimes when we say that someone rushes to do something,
they’re not thinking carefully about it.
sometimes you might try to
rush to finish your homework, friends, and
if you rush to do something, a lot of times you don’t do it
very well.
it’s better to take your time.
now there’s something
else that we want to look at here in this sentence,
and this is the idea of attack.
now, to challenge somebody’s ideas or
to challenge their authority is to question it.
to attack is a little more serious.
that’s right. now, attacking someone physically is of course
using some kind of force to harm them.
but you can also attack someone verbally, using
harsh words that might
hurt them because you really want to just
beat them.
exactly. for example:
The dog tried to attack the mail carrier.
this is a way you could use this word attack
in a physical sense.
but as we see in our lesson here,
you could attack the opposite position.
this happens a lot of times when people
disagree with others —
politically or other things like that.
that’s right.
now, going on in our reading,
we see that Grant argues that people
should act like scientists —
experimenting,
and considering all
possible explanations, and questioning earlier beliefs.
this will allow them to make better decisions
and to be more
understanding of others
with different beliefs.
so what our writer is saying here is that in this
book, Grant is saying that people need to
really take a serious look at the things
they believe and why they believe them.
you should also consider
all other explanations or possibilities
before you really form an opinion about something.
that’s right. and this is a difficult thing to do because
this is what we often call critical thinking.
it takes effort.
it’s a lot easier to just sort of sit back
and get fed some beliefs and then just
hold on to them and not let other people change your mind.
but if you never think critically about your life,
you can never discover
the wonderful things that are beyond
what you’ve already thought of.
exactly. and friends,
don’t worry.
Critical thinking is something that takes practice.
if you practice thinking critically,
you will get better at it over time.
i believe our writer has some tips for us
in the next part of our article.
but first, let’s go to today’s Info Cloud.
hello friends, welcome to Info Cloud. hey Garrett,
have you ever walked into a situation and thought, “Yeah,
this isn’t going to end well”?
hmm, hey Rex — plenty of times. that’s the perfect setup
for today’s saying: the writing is on the wall.
that’s right.
that’s a way of saying that trouble is inevitable —
something bad is about to happen.
exactly.
the phrase has ancient origins — it comes from the Bible.
right, in the book of Daniel,
there’s a story about King Belshazzar.
the offense he got? throwing a huge feast
using sacred things taken from the temple in Jerusalem.
during the feast,
a mysterious hand appeared and wrote words on the wall.
nobody could understand them,
so the king called for Daniel, who interpreted the message.
the message foretold the fall of Belshazzar’s kingdom.
and sure enough, it happened that very night.
since then, the writing is on the wall
has been used to mean
that there are clear signs of something bad
coming — like when a company is losing money and people say
“the writing is on the wall for this business,”
or when a sports team is
performing terribly and fans know a loss is inevitable.
the phrase is a warning to pay attention
to the signs before
it’s too late.
yes,
if you see the writing on the wall,
it’s a chance to prepare or change course
before disaster strikes.
good point, Garrett.
so, any writing on the wall about what’s next for us?
only that we’ll be back soon
with more Info Cloud. stay sharp, Rex.

the writing is on the wall 不好的兆頭
今天跟大家分享一個有一點神秘色彩的用語:
the writing is on the wall(文字都寫在牆壁上)。
The writing is on the wall 是用來形容一些麻煩是不可避免的,某些不好的事情即將發生。
這個用語出自於《舊約聖經》,巴比倫王伯沙撒在宴會上看到牆上出現神秘的字跡,透露他的王國即將滅亡。果然,當天晚上這個預言就實現了。
The writing is on the wall 就因此被用來指不好的兆頭。
例如:一家公司虧損的時候,人們就會說:
The writing is on the wall for this business.
(這家公司可能不妙了)
這就是今天的 Info Cloud,我們下次雲端見!

Think Again
Leaders are often encouraged to develop confidence,
but Think Again argues that confidence
must be balanced by humility.
Truly great leaders
know themselves —
including both their strengths and their weaknesses.
Humility allows leaders to change course
when they are moving in the wrong direction.
It can also motivate them to work hard
and think carefully about how best to achieve their goals.
接下來看 humility 這個名詞,意思是 謙虛。
比如:
A highly regarded minister, he showed humility and kindness in every situation.
作為一位備受尊敬的牧師,他在任何情況下都表現出謙虛與仁慈。
它的形容詞是 humble,也就是「卑微的」或「謙虛的」意思。
譬如:
From humble beginnings, she rose to fame after her debut album.
她出生卑微,卻在推出首張專輯後一舉成名。
Humble 也可以當動詞使用,它的現在分詞 humbling 也可以當名詞使用,意思是「令人感到謙卑的」。
例如:
Reading my essay aloud in front of my classmates was a humbling experience, but their comments helped me to improve.
在同學面前大聲朗讀文章是一個令人感到謙卑的經驗,但是他們的意見幫助我進步。
All right friends,
let’s get right into the next part of our lesson.
We read: Leaders are often encouraged to develop confidence.
Let’s stop there for a moment and talk about this word:
confidence.
So, confidence is a feeling of self-assurance
that arises from an appreciation of one’s
abilities or qualities.
All right,
so this just means that you feel
like you are able to do something,
or you feel
very sure of who you are as a person and what you can do.
For example,
some people don’t have a lot of confidence
when they are children.
It’s often said that leaders need confidence,
but that’s not what the author of this book is saying, is it?
No, we see that leaders are often encouraged to
develop confidence,
but Think Again argues that confidence must be balanced by
humility.
Humility is such a great word, friends,
and you already learned
about that in your Language Lab.
So, not confidence alone,
but humility — they both need to exist together.
We read on:
Truly great leaders know themselves,
including both their strengths
and their weaknesses.
Do you know your weaknesses, friends?
These are things that you’re not good at,
or that you’re not strong in — things that need improvement.
That’s right.
I think that the less you understand your own weaknesses,
the less useful you can be in connecting and
understanding others.
Knowing your weaknesses
helps you improve yourself and care
for others.
It helps you connect with others as
well, friends, because in this way,
we can help each other.
And it’s important for leaders as well.
If you’re a leader and you only rely on
what you can do well,
without knowing what you need to work on,
it’s going to be really hard
for you to see your blind spots —
those problems that you have that you don’t know about.
I definitely agree with what our writer is saying.
The lesson goes on to say that:
Humility allows leaders to change course
when they are moving in the wrong direction.
Okay — change course —
this is something interesting that we can take a look at, friends.
If you’re changing course,
it means that you’re going in a new direction,
or you’re deciding to try something different.
That’s right. For example:
When the plan failed,
they had to change course and find a new way to finish the project.
Ah, okay.
So we need to be able to be flexible or
change course as leaders.
It can also motivate them to work hard
and think carefully about how best
to achieve their goals.
Yes, motivate is a really great word.
If you are motivated to do something,
it means that you are
excited or interested in doing it.
I’ve noticed that the best teachers I’ve ever had are
teachers who motivate me to be excited
about learning.
Those are really good leaders and teachers.
That’s right.
I think that if you don’t have the humility to know your own
weaknesses, then you become like something very
hard and dry — that if you hit it on the ground or on a rock,
it just breaks.
That’s like a person who’s very...
they have no humility,
and they are faced with a big challenge and
they break in half
because they didn’t know how to change.
It’s much better to be flexible and be able to change course
when you run into problems or face one of your weaknesses.
All right friends,
we’ll be back in just a moment, but right now,
it’s time for today’s Fun Fact!
Hello, fact friends!
I am Detective Earnest Finder, and I have a fun fact
for you today.
Did you know that the author of Think Again,
Adam Grant, was an excellent diver in high school?
It’s true — he was good at many things,
and it turns out he went to Harvard
and worked as a professional magician
during his time in college.
He could make things disappear — whoa!
And that is today’s fun fact.
I’m sorry, Ducky.
David, we’ve been talking a lot
about being able to change course or be flexible.
Do you think it’s easy for a person to change their beliefs?
Absolutely not.
I think it can be really
hard for people to change their beliefs
when they already have their minds set on something.
But oftentimes,
the most challenging things are the most rewarding.
So it’s worth it.
It’s worth it to learn how to change
course and to change your opinion.
Friends,
we have more to learn tomorrow,
so make sure you come back and join us.
That’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And I’m David, and we’ll see you next time right here on
Studio Classroom.

Hello, friends!
My name is Anne Marie,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together. I’m David,
and this is Studio Classroom.
We have had a very exciting time talking about
forming opinions,
changing course,
and knowing our strengths and our
weaknesses.
We are looking at a summary of the book called Think Again.
Yes, it actually reminds me of one of the most
important things that my godmother told me,
which is: it’s important for you to know yourself.
This book talks a lot about
understanding the things that you believe,
the opinions that you hold,
and being willing to look at them like a scientist—
considering different ideas,
understanding why you think that way,
and experimenting with other ways of looking at something.
This is so important for us to do, and it’s especially
important for leaders to do as well.
Friends,
we have more to learn from this book,
so let’s get right into our first reading for the day:
Think Again
Think Again also offers advice
on how to influence others to change their beliefs
without simply arguing for one’s own views.
Rather, the author points out
that people are usually more
willing to reconsider their own beliefs
when those they are speaking with do the same.
This means that in a debate,
a person will more likely come to agree with you
if you are also
willing to concede points and look for common ground.
Hello, I’m Jack.
今天的 Usage Tip 要來介紹 rather、rather than 和 would rather 這三個非常相似的字詞。
副詞 rather 的意思是「相反地」或是「反而」,可以放在句首或句中,常常會用在「否定詞 + A,句點,rather,逗號,B」這種結構中,A 與 B 所講述的內容相反。
rather than 的句構是「rather than + 動詞 ing,逗號,子句 + 動詞」,表示主詞並非想做某事,而是選擇做另一件事。
另外,would rather 的意思是「寧願」,也就是「寧願做動詞一,也不做動詞二」。
來看個例句:
Rather than going to the station on foot, I’d rather take a taxi on such a rainy day.
在這樣的下雨天,與其走路去車站,我寧願搭計程車去。
All right, friends, let’s continue learning from this book, Think Again.
We read here:
Think Again also offers advice
on how to influence others to change their beliefs
without simply
arguing for one’s own views.
This is a very tempting thing
for me to do, Dave.
I oftentimes will just
argue with people when I want them to see my point of view.
Yeah, it’s sort of like watching two people
having an arm-wrestling match, right?
Seeing who can shout the loudest or have the best argument.
It’s easy to do, and we all do it.
Our reading goes on to show that, rather,
the author points out that people are usually more
willing to reconsider their own beliefs when those
they are speaking with
do the same.
Okay, so we see here that the author points something out.
Now, if you’re pointing something out,
it means that you are showing or
mentioning something that’s important.
That’s right. Maybe you have a friend who always
points out the mistakes you make—
and that can be a little bit annoying.
Oh yeah, that is the worst!
But here, our author is pointing out
that it’s better to get people to
reconsider their beliefs when you
reconsider yours.
What does this word mean?
To reconsider something
is to think about something
again, and maybe make a new decision.
We have that part of the word "re," right? Like renew—
to do something again.
That’s right.
So to consider something means to think about it
and then make a decision, and re- means to think
about it again.
Here’s an example of
how you could use reconsider in a sentence:
She asked him to reconsider his decision
about quitting the team.
So with this idea of reconsidering,
people are more willing
to reconsider their own beliefs
when those they are speaking with
do the same.
Speaking with is a really good phrase.
It is! It simply means to be talking to someone.
You might enjoy speaking with your friends after school.
Now our lesson continues to say:
This means that in a debate,
a person will more likely come to agree with you
if you are also willing to concede points and
look for common ground.
This seems like a life hack, Dave.
This is like saying how you can win more arguments!
It sort of sounds that way—
but really, it all starts with humility, though.
Because first,
you have to be willing to
concede, or to admit that something
is true—or even kind of give up in an argument.
When you concede what someone is saying, you’re saying:
"Okay, you know what? You are right."
Here’s an example of how you could use
concede in a sentence:
He had to concede that his idea
wasn’t the best.
That means he admitted it.
Now, there is something else that we want to look at here,
and this is the idea of common ground.
All right—common ground. Very important phrase.
Very important concept.
It means something people agree on,
even if they disagree about other things.
Maybe you make friends with someone
because you have a lot of common ground—especially
when it comes to the books you like to read
or the movies you like to watch.
We’re talking about more serious common ground here.
We’re talking about the common ground you find
with people that you’re having a disagreement with.
Right—maybe I’m standing on this island,
that person is standing on that island,
and I’m saying, "You come over here,"
and they say, "No, you go over there."
But instead, we find common ground—
a little area in the middle of our two islands where we can
stand and have a more
reasonable conversation.
I like that a lot.
Let’s continue learning right now, friends,
with our next reading.
Think Again
Grant recommends that teachers at all levels of education
and supervisors in workplaces
should encourage people to change their ideas.
This involves being flexible enough to change old practices
and not criticizing students and workers
when they change their minds.
After all, people are not likely to revise their views
if those in authority make this difficult.
我們先來看 "supervisor" 這個名詞,它的意思就是「主管」。
來看例句:
Each morning, our supervisor assigned daily tasks, reminded us of our sales targets, and encouraged teamwork.
每天早上,我們的主管都會分配每日任務、提醒我們銷售目標,並鼓勵團隊合作。
它的動詞是 "supervise",意思是「監督」。
例如:
Children behave differently among their peers when supervised versus not.
在有無被監督的情況下,孩童在同儕中的表現會有所不同。
它的形容詞是 "supervisory",意思是「監督的」。
例如:
This job includes a supervisory role in the special project department.
這份工作包括在特殊專案部門擔任監督的角色。
All right, friends,
let’s continue on here with the next part of our lesson.
Grant recommends that teachers at
all levels of education and supervisors in workplaces
should encourage people to change
their ideas.
This is not just for leaders.
This is not just for students.
Everybody needs to have an open mind and admit that, yes,
they might be wrong about some things.
That’s right. Now,
this includes—or involves—being flexible
enough to change old practices
and not criticizing students and workers
when they change their minds.
Okay, I see one of my favorite words here right away, friends—
the word flexible.
If you are flexible,
it means you are able to change or adapt to new situations.
That’s right. We see that it’s an
important thing to be flexible, because otherwise,
it’s very hard to change.
A flexible schedule is important for balancing
work and school, for example.
And if you’re flexible at work or at school,
it means that you are able to take on new challenges,
and you’re able to solve problems quickly.
Now, this is talking about flexibility
when it comes to your ideas.
And we see that with this term,
old practices—
we’re talking about ways of doing things that have been used
for a long time—and often, for too long.
Yeah, they’re not all bad, though. For example,
some old practices like
writing letters to a friend or loved one
are still meaningful today.
That’s a good point.
But the point that our writer is
trying to make here, friends, is that
old practices need to be examined,
and you need to be flexible about whether those things should
still be done or if they need to be changed.
Now, we see another good word here, and that’s the word
criticizing.
Criticizing—that’s no one’s favorite word.
Not at all, yeah.
But we see that when it
comes to changing these old practices—when someone says,
"Hey, we should change something,"—
you should not just
criticize that person.
To criticize is to point out when something is wrong,
or to point out what you think is bad about something.
Exactly.
And if you are a critical person,
it means that you are the kind of person who
likes to point out
wrong or bad things about situations or about people.
But friends, instead of criticizing,
it’s better to help people try to improve.
That’s right. So,
when someone is working at a company—or even a student—
changes their mind about an old practice,
they shouldn’t just be immediately criticized.
They should have their idea
considered instead.
Hmm, after all,
our lesson says people are not likely to revise their views
if those in authority make this difficult.
Now, we have this word revise there. Can you explain it to us?
Sure. If you revise something,
it means you change it to make it better.
Now, we could talk about revising ideas or revising a process.
A lot of times,
you will use the word revise
when we’re talking about a piece of writing.
You might revise your essay
before you turn it in as homework.
That’s right.
But if every time someone wants to
revise a way of doing something,
they get criticized by upper management—by their supervisors—
then people will have no motivation
to make any changes.
So it is so important at
all levels, friends, to make sure you are willing to listen
when people want to make changes.
All right, friends,
we have more to learn in just a moment,
but first, let’s go to today’s Info Cloud.
Hello, and welcome to Info Cloud! Today,
we have a funny phrase to teach you:
Don’t throw the baby out
with the bathwater.
I don’t think there’s anything funny about throwing babies!
Thankfully, this phrase doesn’t mean anyone is
literally throwing a baby.
That’s good.
But I think you’d better explain the meaning of the phrase.
Well, in the phrase,
we have two things:
something that’s no longer useful—the dirty bathwater—
and something that’s very special and valuable—the baby.
Oh, I think I see. After the baby’s bath,
we don’t keep the water,
so we discard it, just like we throw
away other things we don’t need.
Right. Now,
imagine you are cleaning your whole house,
and you get impatient,
so you just start throwing everything
into a garbage bag.
That’s a terrible idea!
If you do that, you’re sure to throw away some
important things along with the trash.
Exactly!
You need to be careful that you
don’t accidentally throw away
valuable things in your hurry to get rid of things
that are no longer useful.
Don’t throw the valuable baby out with the bathwater
that you need to throw out.
Can we use this phrase for ideas too?
Yes—especially for discussions where two people
do not agree on everything.
To avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater,
look for what is correct or true
among the things you disagree with.
That’s a good rule to follow in any discussion.
Indeed!
So whether you’re cleaning or talking to someone, remember:
Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
兩人爭論時,即使不同意對方全部的觀點,也不應完全否定對方說的話,可以找出其中有價值的內容。
當我們評斷一件事情,很多時候會太武斷地下定論,或是直接全盤否定。
有人可能會說:
Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,不要把嬰兒和洗澡水一起倒掉。
我們替嬰兒洗完澡之後,是先把嬰兒抱出來,再把髒水倒掉。
Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater
就是在表達:不要全盤否定一件事情,要不然可能會失去一些有價值的東西。
特別是當兩個人意見不合時,我們應該尋找對方觀點中正確或真實的部分,尋求共同點,彼此學習,創造雙贏。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud。那麼,下次雲端見!

Think Again
Grant’s book is written in an engaging style,
filled with stories from his own life
and the experiences of others.
He combines this
with scientific research to appeal to a variety of people.
Think Again’s thesis matters for anyone
in a leadership position,
and also for ordinary people.
Everyone can benefit from
being willing to improve their beliefs and adjust their plans.
接下來看名詞 thesis,意思是「論點」或是「論題」。
例如:
After our many experiments failed, our thesis about water and oil absorption had to be revised.
經過多次實驗失敗後,我們不得不修正關於吸水性和吸油性的論點。
或者是:
An example of a thesis statement is: Teen self-esteem is negatively impacted by social media use.
論點陳述的範例之一是:青少年的自尊因社交媒體的使用而受到負面影響。
Thesis 也可以指「論文」喔,
譬如:
My master’s thesis focuses on how sugar affects children’s learning and behavior.
我的碩士論文主要研究糖如何影響兒童的學習與行為。
Okay, friends, we have one more section of our lesson today,
so let’s get right into it.
Grant’s book is written in an engaging style,
filled with stories from his own life
and the experiences of others.
I really like reading these types of books,
where the writer uses their own experiences as examples,
because sometimes when you’re reading,
people have ideas or they want to teach you something,
but there’s no proof—
or they’ve never actually tried the method before.
Yeah, and it’s just not very interesting, right?
If something is engaging, then it’s interesting or enjoyable.
And when you share an idea using stories from your own life,
it’s engaging because it’s a human story.
I’m a human—I can connect with this story, and that helps me
understand the idea.
Exactly.
Here’s another example of how you can use that word engaging in a sentence:
The teacher used an engaging story to explain the lesson.
How does our lesson continue?
Well, it goes on to say that he combines this with
scientific research to appeal to a variety of people.
So he’s not just sharing stories about his life
and saying, "You should believe me."
He’s also combining it with scientific research.
That’s right.
Now, if something appeals to other people,
it means that it attracts them
or that they’re going to like that thing.
For example:
The colorful design of children’s books appeals to their young eyes.
That’s a great example.
Here we’re seeing that the things taught in this book
can now appeal to a wider variety of people
because he is using engaging examples
and scientific research.
That’s right.
Think Again’s thesis
matters for anyone in a leadership position,
and also for ordinary people.
All right, we see this word matters here, friends.
This means that something is important or it has meaning.
That’s right.
For example:
It matters if you arrive late to class every day—
you might get in trouble.
That’s right—it’s important.
It means something if you’re late every day.
And we see here
that this thesis—you saw that word in your Language Lab—
matters for anyone who is in leadership.
But also, ordinary people need to pay attention to it as well.
That’s right. In fact,
everyone can benefit from
being willing to improve their beliefs
and adjust their plans.
We see that phrase to benefit from something, friends,
and we want to talk about it.
If you benefit from something,
it means that you get something good
or get something helpful from it.
That’s right.
Whenever I think about adjusting plans,
I remember—for a part of my life—
I felt like trying to plan out things was so useless,
because there are so many things that you can’t control.
Well, I realized that’s not really a great way to think.
If you really want to be able to get somewhere,
you need to start by having a plan of where you want to go.
And if things change—if something doesn’t work out—
no problem!
Since you already have a plan of where you’re trying to get to,
you can quickly think up a new way to get there.
You can change course,
and then my favorite word comes back into play here, friends—
you can be flexible.
There are so many great things to learn from this book, friends.
I think I might want to take a look and read the whole thing.
If you’re interested in this topic,
you can go ahead and check it out as well.
Friends, remember the title is Think Again.
We’ll be right back after today’s Fun Fact.
Hello, Fact Friends!
I am Detective Ernest Finder,
and I have a fun fact for you today.
Did you know that many words for change
start with re-?
"Re" means again—think about rewind or rebound.
But the word repent
means to change from a bad way of thinking to a good one.
And it comes from the word penitent,
meaning truly sorry.
You can repent—and that is today’s Fun Refact.
I need to recover my basketball!
Friends, as we finish out this article, I have a question.
And in fact, it is our Talk About It question.
Are you ready?
I’m so ready!
Okay—
Why do you think it’s important for leaders to have humility?
If the leader does not have humility, two things happen:
Number one—they’re mean.
They don’t listen to anybody.
They don’t care what anyone else thinks.
All they want to do is what they want to do.
And that will really have a bad effect
on their employees.
Number two—
if the leader of a company doesn’t have humility,
then their company will probably fail.
They can’t change with the changing world
because they believe their way is best.
And so,
that company is not going to last very long.
Those are two really great reasons.
What do you think, friends?
Why do you think it’s important for leaders to have humility?
Talk about that in English.
That’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And I’m David.
And we’ll see you next time right here on Studio Classroom.
