Hello, friends!
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today, we have a food lesson, and the name of our lesson is:
Chocolate is delicious. Mmm!
Chocolate is delicious!
Friends, there’s no way you’ve never tried chocolate.
It’s one of the most popular treats in the whole world. Yes!
Chocolate is that brown dessert.
It’s hard, and people will often eat it because they want something sweet. Yes!
It’s something that’s comforting.
It’s kind of healthy in some ways,
and it’s eaten in many different ways, right?
And if you say something is delicious, it means that it tastes good.
You can also use the word tasty. Yes, you can.
Chocolate is tasty.
Chocolate is delicious!
And it’s time to start learning more about it.
Let’s go to our reading.
Do you like chocolate?
Many people do.
And some people don’t just like chocolate—they love it.
It is sweet and delicious.
There’s chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies.
You can eat chocolate ice cream or chocolate pie.
You can put chocolate powder in milk, and it makes a yummy drink.
You can enjoy it hot or cold.
Even a plain bar of chocolate is a nice treat.
You can share some with a friend.
Thanks for that, Esther.
Yes, like we said earlier,
there are so many different ways to eat chocolate.
And it’s amazing—it comes from a bean in a small plant,
and through lots of work and processing,
it becomes that delicious treat.
It sure is amazing.
Now, let’s go to our Find It question.
Our question is:
What does Sam share with Susie?
What does Sam share with Susie?
Well friends, I think the answer will be in today’s lesson.
Now it’s time to go over to Sonia to learn today’s keywords.
Susi
Susie
“This is a nice afternoon treat.”
Sim
“There are too many delicious chocolate treats.”
Sim
“I eat them with chocolate milk—my favorite drink.”
“Just put chocolate powder in milk and stir.”
Do you want some chocolate, Susie?
Sure! I love chocolate.
Take a big piece.
Thanks! Are there nuts in it?
No, it’s plain.
Great. Mmm!
This is a nice afternoon treat.
What’s your favorite chocolate treat?
Chocolate ice cream?
Or maybe chocolate pie?
Or maybe chocolate cake?
I can’t decide!
Friends, if you share something with someone else,
it means you give someone else what you have.
You can share food,
or you can share your time with them. Right?
You’re giving up something that you have—
something you don’t want to keep just to yourself.
And in today’s conversation,
we hear about someone else who’s sharing, right?
Our question is:
What does Sam share with Susie?
That’s our Find It question.
He shares chocolate with Susie.
Sam is sharing chocolate.
He wants to know if Susie would like some.
And Susie says, “Sure!”
She says, “I love chocolate!”
Yes, you can use this word love to talk about food you really enjoy eating.
Exactly!
Well, Sam says:
“Take a big piece.”
He doesn’t just want to share a little bit.
Take a big piece!
“Take a big piece” is also today’s Calendar Phrase.

Take a big piece.
Take a big piece.
Mmm! Would you like a piece of chocolate?
Sure! I love chocolate.
Take a big piece.
This one?
No, take a big piece.
Okay, how about this one?
No, that’s too big.
Take a big piece!
Take a big piece!

Susie says thanks, but she asks an important question: Are there nuts in it?
Garrett, can you tell us what nuts are?
Sure, friends.
We’ve talked about nuts a few times on the show recently.
Nuts are something that you eat—think of cashew nuts, almonds, or even peanuts (which technically aren’t nuts, but they’re similar enough, right?).
People ask this question because sometimes, when they eat nuts,
their bodies might have allergic reactions, or they might feel itchy.
So, Susie wants to know if there are nuts in this chocolate bar.
And people also might ask this question because they hope there are nuts in it!
Many people love nuts in chocolate.
Let’s go to Sonia for more on this question.
"Are there nuts in it?"
"Are there carrots in the soup?"
Are there raisins in the bread?"
Is there pork in the dumplings?"
"Is there sugar in the iced tea?"
Thank you, Sonia.
Well, we learn from Sam that there are no nuts in this chocolate.
It’s plain.
Right here, the word plain is spelled P-L-A-I-N.
It means there are no other flavors or ingredients added.
We use this word when talking about food.
For example, you can say, "These noodles are plain."
That means there’s no sauce—nothing extra added to them.
Suzy is happy about this chocolate and says,
“This is a nice afternoon treat.”
Now friends, a treat is something you enjoy.
It’s often food—and often sweet, right?
And Sam wants to know: What is Suzy’s favorite chocolate treat?
She answers:
“It’s chocolate ice cream... or maybe chocolate pie... or maybe chocolate cake.”
She can’t decide because she really likes chocolate, right?
And like we heard, there are lots of different ways to enjoy chocolate.
Ice cream is what many people like—
it’s when you take frozen cream and add other flavors to it.
And pie is kind of like cake.
It has a bready outside on the bottom and sides, with some sort of filling on top.
I’ve never had a chocolate pie, though!
It sounds maybe like a mix between chocolate cake and maybe chocolate ice cream.
Yeah, something like that.
Well, chocolate cake is also popular!
Friends, it’s time for a quick break.
We’ll be right back after this.
Let’s Talk in English—Ten minutes every day.
Every day—that’s the way, friends!
We want to ask you this question and see if you can answer:
What is your favorite chocolate dessert?
Describe it.
Is it one of the things that Suzy talked about?
How about just a bar of chocolate?
Well, you know, Garrett—I love chocolate cream puffs.
That’s my favorite chocolate dessert.
What’s yours?
What’s mine? Maybe chocolate pudding.
That sounds delicious!
Friends, let’s continue today’s lesson.
There are too many delicious chocolate treats!
I love chocolate chip cookies.
Me too! I eat them with a glass of milk.
I eat them with chocolate milk—my favorite drink!
You can make your own—just put chocolate powder in milk and stir.
Hot chocolate is good on a cold day,
but chocolate milk is good anytime!
Sam tells us that there are too many delicious chocolate treats.
What he likes is chocolate chip cookies.
Ooh, those are great!
They’re like regular sugar cookies,
but with little pieces of chocolate all throughout them—right?
And that’s what the word chip means—it means a small piece.
Yes! He thinks they are delicious.
Again, the word delicious means it tastes good or is very tasty.
Susie likes these cookies too.
She eats them with a glass of milk.
That’s a popular way to have chocolate chip cookies.
Now, milk is put in a glass, so we say “a glass of milk.”
Sonia, can you help us with other measure words like glass, cup, and bowl?
Susie
"I eat them with a glass of milk."
像課文裡的:"a glass of milk"(一杯牛奶)。
"Would you like a bowl of soup?"
The woman ordered two cups of coffee."
"Can I have some water?"
We have a lot of food for the party."
Thank you, Sonia.
Now Sam tells us that he eats chocolate chip cookies with chocolate milk.
That’s his favorite drink, yes.
This is milk that has a chocolate flavor.
He says it’s his favorite drink—or something that you drink, yes.
That word “drink” can be either a noun or a verb, right?
What’s your favorite drink?
My favorite drink is soy milk.
And mine is probably coffee.
Susie says she can make her own.
You can make your own chocolate milk.
Just put chocolate powder in milk and stir, right?
A powder is something that is very, very small.
It’s so tiny that you can’t even pick up one piece of powder with your finger.
Yeah, we don’t say “one powder” because we can’t count it.
Powder is made of lots of really fine particles—kind of like dust.
We put that powder in the cup with some milk, and with a spoon, you stir by moving that spoon around.
And something else that comes in a powder is hot chocolate powder.
This is chocolate, cocoa, some sugar, and flavoring.
You can put this hot chocolate powder in a cup, add water to it, then you get hot chocolate—the drink, yeah.
Hot chocolate is good on a cold day, but Susie likes chocolate milk any time.
Actually, friends, if you want hot chocolate, you could take some chocolate milk and put it in the microwave.
Then you basically have hot chocolate, right?
Yes, so you can make many different drinks with chocolate.
Some people even add chocolate powder or cocoa powder to coffee.
Then you get something like mocha coffee.
Exactly. I’ll give you one more idea.
Growing up, we would have hot chocolate—but with chili powder, with different kinds of spicy flavors.
Kind of like they would do in the country of Mexico.
It’s not for everyone, but I think it’s delicious.
So was it spicy and sweet at the same time?
Exactly!
Wow, that actually sounds very delicious.
Old friends, how do you enjoy eating chocolate or drinking it?
We gave you lots of different ways in our lesson today—from chocolate pie all the way to chocolate milk.
And now we’re going to go and review today’s keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today:
delicious
This food is delicious.
powder
Do you want some coconut powder?
drink
I’m thirsty.
May I have a drink?
plain
He is eating plain rice.
treat
She is eating a cookie for a treat.
Well, friends, those are today’s keywords. They’re very useful when you’re talking about your chocolate treats.
So keep on practicing them!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s keywords are:
delicious, powder, drink, plain, and treat.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence:
First:
“What do you want? Do you want soda, tea, coffee?”
You got it!
What drink do you want?
Next:
“Mangoes are a ___ fruit. This word means yummy.”
Correct!
Mangoes are a delicious fruit.
Next:
“She eats bread. It doesn’t have nuts or raisins or ___.”
Great job!
She eats plain bread.
Next:
“What’s your favorite sweet? It can be chocolate, ice cream...”
That’s correct!
What’s your favorite sweet treat?
Last one:
“Mix the milk ___ with water.”
You’re right!
Mix the milk powder with water.
And what’s your favorite thing to do?
I know—joining me here at Your Turn!
Do you want some chocolate, Susie?
Sure! I love chocolate.
Take a big piece.
Thanks! Are there nuts in it?
No, it’s plain.
Great!
Mmm, this is a nice afternoon treat.
What’s your favorite chocolate treat?
Chocolate ice cream?
Or maybe chocolate pie?
Or maybe chocolate cake?
I can’t decide.
There are too many delicious chocolate treats.
I love chocolate chip cookies.
Me too! I eat them with a glass of milk.
I eat them with chocolate milk—my favorite drink!
You can make your own.
Just put chocolate powder in milk and stir.
Hot chocolate is good on a cold day.
But chocolate milk is good anytime.
One, two, let’s review.
Let’s talk about chocolate.
Sure, chocolate is delicious.
That’s for sure!
Chocolate is very delicious.
I like chocolate with nuts. How about you?
Mmm, I like it plain.
Oh, and I also like chocolate chip cookies.
Me too—with lots of chocolate chips!
Oh yeah!
I eat them with a glass of milk.
I eat them with a glass of chocolate milk. That’s my favorite drink!
Hey, you can make your own!
Just put chocolate powder in milk and stir.
Hot chocolate is good on a cold day.
Any chocolate is good any day.
You’re right!
Oh yeah!
I’m Detective Carter.
I have a problem.
I have some items, and I need to find one that is different.
Can you help me find the odd one out?
I have four items. Three are the same, but one is not.
It does not belong with the other three. Which one is it?
Cruise, Asia, Sea, and Shark.
Oh, this sounded like a nice vacation—until that last word!
Do you think it is the odd one?
Yep—Shark is the answer!
Cruise, Asia, and Sea together make a traveling vacation.
You can take a sea cruise in Asia.
A shark is an animal, and sharks don’t belong on my vacation!
Let’s try another set:
Shark, seafood, snail, and catch.
Three belong together, but one’s just different.
Any guesses?
It’s catch.
Shark, seafood, and snail all come from the ocean.
But catch is different—it’s an action.
I hope someone catches that shark so I can have a nice vacation!
Good work! You helped me find the odd one out.
See you next time, friends!
Friends, today we used the word powder to talk about chocolate powder that you can make into hot chocolate.
What I like to drink is—I like to use milk powder to make milk.
Ah, so do you add water to it?
Right. I add water to the milk.
Then I put it in the microwave, and I can get hot milk.
Okay, one of the most common ways to have powders in the kitchen is in different kinds of spices that add flavor to things.
But they’re not the main thing you’re eating or drinking.
So you’re adding some spiciness or some other flavors.
That’s true—like chili powder.
If you like spicy food, then you can add chili powder to your food.
If you want it more sweet, add some sugar powder as well.
Right, friends, we hope that you enjoyed this lesson about food.
And be sure to join us again tomorrow as we continue talking about chocolate.
That’s right—here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hey, everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is food. Yes!
We're saying chocolate is delicious.
It sure is delicious!
Friends, do you remember what chocolate is?
It’s that brown dessert that is hard,
and people eat it in many ways, right?
Many, many ways.
You might find chocolate powder — it’s fine and dry.
You can put it in some milk or hot water, stir it up,
and it makes a great drink.
Many people like to eat a plain chocolate bar.
That’s a bar of chocolate with no nuts or other things in it.
And you can always have a great treat!
A treat is something you enjoy — it’s not a full meal.
It’s just something you eat that’s enjoyable,
and maybe it can make you feel a little happier inside.
Right, Garrett, can you tell us about a recent chocolate treat
you had that you thought was delicious?
Sure! I had some chocolate with a special nut in it
called a pistachio nut.
They’re green and have a great taste.
I loved that chocolate bar.
That sounds delicious!
Recently, I had butter bread with chocolate,
and it was very tasty.
There were little chocolate chips in that butter bread.
Sounds great!
Oh, friends, in today’s lesson,
we hope you can find our featured answer.
Here’s the question:
What dish does Julie cook sometimes?
What dish does Julie cook sometimes?
Listen carefully to find the answer.
Now, let’s go to Sonia with today’s keywords.
Hey Julie, what are you drinking?
James
How is it different from regular hot chocolate?
It has cinnamon and chili powder in it.
Julie
Julie
It’s excellent.
It’s not difficult to cook.
Hey Julie, what are you drinking?
Mexican hot chocolate.
How is Mexican hot chocolate different from regular hot chocolate?
It’s spicy! It has cinnamon and chili powder in it — and chocolate, of course.
Is it good?
Yes, I love it!
But if you put in too much chili powder, it’s too spicy.
I like spicy things. I’ll have to try it.
You should!
I’ll make you some.
That would be great!
Today, we have James and Julie speaking to each other,
and we start with James asking Julie what she is drinking.
What is she drinking?
She’s enjoying a nice drink,
and James starts off his question as he says “Hey” to Julie.
Now, hey means the same thing as hello or hi.
When I was a kid, we were told we shouldn’t say “hey” — it’s too casual.
But these days, it’s a popular way to greet someone, right?
And you can use “hey” with your friends or your siblings,
but you probably won’t want to use “hey” with someone like your boss or your professor,
because it’s not as respectful.
Right. Well, what is Julie drinking?
She is drinking Mexican hot chocolate.
Yeah! Like I talked about in our show yesterday, friends —
Mexican hot chocolate is different from regular hot chocolate.
And James wants to know how Mexican hot chocolate
is different from the usual hot chocolate he knows.
First, let’s go to Sonia for more on that question.
How is Mexican hot chocolate different from regular hot chocolate?
A is different from B 就是指 A 與 B 不同。
Brown sugar is different from white sugar.
This design is different from all our other designs.
The U.S. is different from the U.K. in many ways.
Thanks, Sonia.
Well, Julie explains well what is different about Mexican hot chocolate.
It’s spicy. It has cinnamon and chili powder in it. Nice!
These are things I like. And it has chocolate in it?
Yes!
Cinnamon is a powder. It’s also a spice. It has a strong smell.
Some people like it, some people don’t.
There’s a very famous dessert made with cinnamon powder
called cinnamon buns or cinnamon bread.
Mmm… yummy, yummy!
And chili comes from chili peppers.
These are fruits most people think of as vegetables,
but they are really spicy.
So they give that spicy flavor to this drink.
So this drink has chili powder, cinnamon powder, and chocolate.
It’s sweet and spicy!
Well, we hear from Julie that she loves this drink,
but if you put in too much chili powder,
it can become too spicy.
Right. If something is too spicy,
you might feel like there is a fire on your tongue,
and you might say, “This is very hot!”
Right. Well, James likes spicy things. He’ll have to try it.
Hey, I like spicy things!
That’s today’s calendar phrase:

I like spicy things.
I like spicy things.
This Mexican dish is spicy, right?
I like spicy things.
Do you want to add more hot sauce?
Sure! I like spicy things.
Do you want to add more hot sauce?
Sure! I like spicy things.
Oh, but not this spicy…
Oops! Too spicy!
I like spicy things.
I like spicy things.

Now, Julie is a good friend.
She tells James that she’ll make him some Mexican hot chocolate.
And that sounds delicious!
Friends, you can make some too. It’s not difficult!
Make some regular hot chocolate,
but add in those extra spices:
chili powder and cinnamon.
And if you don’t know how much to add,
well, go online and look up the recipe.
Then you’ll see how to make it.
Well, this sounds great!
Friends, it’s time to take a quick break now.
Make sure to grab a drink,
and then join us right after this.
We’ll be right back!
Let’s Talk in English.
Let’s take ten minutes every day — every day!
Faster wave!
Welcome back!
Friends, you know hot chocolate is a very popular drink,
especially in the winter.
But you don’t have to drink it plain.
You can add many things to it.
One of the most popular things is adding little marshmallows on top.
They’re really just sugar in a bouncy, squishy form, right?
They are often white.
And something else that you can add is whipped cream.
This is cream that has been whipped,
and you often see whipped cream on cakes.
Now, friends, let’s continue our lesson.
There’s a Mexican meat dish with chocolate in it.
You should try that too!
Really? Isn’t chocolate always in sweet things?
No, you can use it with meat.
The sauce of the Mexican chicken dish has chocolate in it.
That sounds interesting.
It’s excellent! I make it sometimes.
It’s not difficult to cook.
I’d like to try that too.
It’s fun to try food from different countries.
I agree!
Now Julie tells us that there’s a Mexican meat dish that has chocolate in it.
Yes, a Mexican meat dish with chocolate in it.
Friends, can you imagine that? Meat with chocolate?
Well, it’s true — and it’s delicious!
These are dishes with a chocolate sauce
that has a little bit of sweetness,
but it’s mostly savory.
Right. Julie tells James that he should try that.
But James is surprised, so he asks:
“Really? Isn’t chocolate always in sweet things?”
The answer is no!
You can use it with meat.
The sauce of the Mexican chicken dish has chocolate in it.
Right! So this is a meat dish with a chocolate sauce.
Garrett, you know the name of this dish, right?
It’s called mole — or that’s the name of the sauce.
You can put it on chicken or some other meats,
but I do think chicken is the most popular.
That sounds delicious!
Now, let’s go to Sonia.
The sauce of the Mexican chicken dish has chocolate in it.
所有格有兩種呈現的方式,本句的 "the sauce of the Mexican chicken dish"
也可以說成 "the Mexican chicken dish’s sauce"。
The title of my new book is The Secret to Happiness.
My new book’s title is The Secret to Happiness.
The lid of that pen is missing.
That pen’s lid is missing.
Thank you, Sonia.
Now, James thinks that this Mexican dish with chocolate sounds interesting.
It sure does! There aren’t many dishes quite like it.
All friends,
we hope you were listening closely to the conversation
and that you could find our “Find It” answer.
Remember, the question is: What dish does Julie cook sometimes?
The answer is: A Mexican dish with chocolate in it. Yes!
This dish that Julie was talking about—well,
she even makes it sometimes. She knows how to cook it.
She says it’s excellent.
Something that’s excellent isn’t just good—
it’s really, really good.
I agree. I love eating dishes with mole sauce.
I tried to make it one time,
but it was really hard.
Maybe you can buy it somewhere, right?
Well, Garrett, I think you should ask Julie,
because Julie knows how to make it.
And Julie tells us that it’s not difficult to cook.
If something is difficult to do,
it means it is very hard to do.
Yeah, it might have lots of steps
or things that are not easy to do.
James says that he would like to try that too.
It’s fun to try food from different countries.
It sure is! You know,
James should get together with Julie,
and maybe they can go on a trip and try different foods—
because that’s what Terra does.
Great idea!
Oh friends, we hope you can try mole too.
It’s very special.
It’s not like other chocolate dishes,
because it’s not very sweet.
It goes with a meat dish,
or you can try other things with it too, right?
I think, Garrett, you were right—
because when I read about mole sauce,
it includes lots of spices,
and sometimes even seeds, like pumpkin seeds.
Right!
I think when I tried to make it,
my problem was I was using whole spices,
like whole cinnamon sticks.
If I had just used powders,
it would have been a lot easier.
Thanks for sharing!
Well, we’ll have to go and ask Julie how to make this sauce.
And now, let’s go and review our keywords:
Here’s your first keyword for today:
Hey
—Hey, what are you guys doing?
Regular
—I just did the regular things today.
Chili
—There is too much chili in the soup.

Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep on practicing them.
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are:
Hey, regular, chili, excellent, and difficult.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
What is your ______ lunch? You have this most of the time, correct?
—What is your regular lunch?
Next:

Now your turn:
Hey Julie, what are you drinking?
—Mexican hot chocolate.
How is Mexican hot chocolate different from regular hot chocolate?
—It’s spicy. It has cinnamon and chili powder in it. And chocolate, of course.
Is it good?

—I like spicy things. I’ll have to try it.
—You should! I’ll make you some.
—That would be great.
There’s a Mexican meat dish with chocolate in it. You should try that too.
—Really? Isn’t chocolate always in sweet things?
—No, you can use it with meat.
The sauce of the Mexican chicken dish has chocolate in it.
—That sounds interesting.
—It’s excellent. I make it sometimes. It’s not difficult to cook.
—I’d like to try that too.
It’s fun to try food from different countries.
—I agree!
One, two—let’s review!
Ah, tasty!
Oh haha—what are you drinking?
—Hot chocolate. But it’s a little different.
—Different? What do you mean?
—It’s Mexican hot chocolate.
—Mexican hot chocolate? Well, what does it taste like?
—It tastes a little spicy.
—Spicy hot chocolate?
—Yes. It has cinnamon and chili powder in it.
—Cinnamon sounds good, but chili powder in hot chocolate? Are you sure?
—Yes, I’m sure. And of course, it has chocolate.
—Yeah, of course.
Did you know some meat dishes are made with chocolate?
—Chocolate and meat together?
—Yes. The sauce has chocolate.
—Sounds interesting. But how does it taste?
—Excellent.
—Any other questions?
—Yes. Can you make some Mexican hot chocolate for me? I’d like to try it.
—Sure. One cup of Mexican hot chocolate, coming right up!
—Great!
All right friends,
we learned all about some special ways to use chocolate
as we enjoy some treats.
