hello friends
welcome to Let’s Talk in English
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett. You’re joining us for a food lesson.
But we’re not talking about food that you eat.
Right. The name of our lesson is "I’m Thirsty."
And today we are talking about drinks.
Drinks are things like water and juice
that you put into your mouth.
You often put drinks that you drink into a cup,
not on a plate or in a bowl.
Now friends, that word "thirsty"
means you have the feeling of
really wanting to drink something,
especially water.
Right, and this word "drink" is both a noun—
something that you put into your mouth—
or a verb—the action that you do
when you put that into your mouth, when you drink water.
So when you’re thirsty,
you really want a drink.
That’s similar to the word "hungry." When you feel hungry,
you really want to eat something.
Right. So today we’ll be talking about what you can drink
when you feel thirsty.
Let’s go to our reading now.
It’s a hot summer day. You’re thirsty. You need a cold drink.
What do you choose?
Many people like lemonade.
It is just lemon juice,
water, and sugar.
But some people put berries in it.
Blueberry or strawberry lemonade is delicious.
Iced tea is another popular summer drink.
You can drink it with or without sugar.
Many people also like iced coffee or cold brew coffee.
Or you can just have a tall glass of cool water.
Thank you, Garrett.
We heard so many different kinds of drinks
we can drink in this hot weather.
Now let’s go to our "Find It" question. Our question is:
What does Sam really like?
What does Sam really like?
Friends, find the answer in today’s lesson.
Now let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
Susi
"Maybe lemonade."
I like lemon juice with water and sugar."
"Let’s have blueberry or strawberry lemonade."
"I’d also like iced tea."
"I just want a glass of cool water."
Wow, it’s hot outside, Sam.
I need a cold drink.
Me too. What do you want?
Maybe lemonade.
I like lemon juice with water and sugar.
Me too. But I really like lemonade with berries in it.
Let’s have blueberry or strawberry lemonade.
Good idea! We can get some at the café down the street.
Garrett, it’s pretty hot outside. Do you need a cold drink?
Oh, that sounds wonderful! Yes!
It is very hot out. We’re getting into the summer months,
and that means we want ways to cool down.
Right. And that is what Suzy says—because it’s hot outside,
she needs a cold drink.
And Sam agrees. He also needs a cold drink.
And so he asks Suzy:
"What do you want?" What kind of cold drink
would Suzy want to drink?
And Suzy tells us she wants to drink lemonade.
Now lemonade is one of our keywords. And what is it made of?
It’s made from lemon juice,
water, and sugar.
Here is Sonia to tell us the difference between
lemonade, lemon juice, and lemon water.
Susie
Maybe lemonade.
Squeeze a little lemon juice onto the fish.
The girls are selling lemonade.
I like to drink lemon water.
Thank you, Sonia. Now,
Susie tells us that she likes lemon juice with water
and sugar. And of course,
that just makes lemonade. That’s a special word for this
combination of ingredients.
Lemonade can be really nice on a hot day,
especially when you put lots of ice in it.
That is true.
Now, some people like to add lemon juice to water.
I like to do that.
But there are many different kinds of juice. For example,
some people drink orange juice in the morning, or apple juice.
Right. Juice is that liquid
that comes out of fruits and vegetables.
Sometimes you can mix
different fruit or vegetable juices together
to make something special.
Right. And Sam also enjoys lemonade.
Now let’s go to our "Find It" question.
Our question was: What does Sam really like?
He really likes lemonade with berries in it.
So not just plain lemonade, right?
And friends, did you hear
Sam say: "I really like..."
If you really like to do something in English,
we don’t say “I very like.” We say: “I really like.”
Make sure to use that word really,
and maybe add some berries to your lemonade.
Berries are fruits that grow on
low trees. These are things like strawberries and blueberries.
And Sam says:
"Let’s have blueberry or strawberry lemonade."
So he wants to add blueberries.
Blueberries are a kind of berry.
They’re very small and they are dark blue.
All right. They’re a little sweet and a little sour,
and go great in all sorts of things.
Strawberries are a red berry.
They’re a bit bigger and are very popular in many desserts.
Right. Frozen blueberries are great.
They’re like little
balls that you can add to many drinks and desserts,
even ice cream.
Well, Susie thinks all of this is a great idea.
She says: "Good idea!
We can get some at the café down the street."
Yes, friends, if you are looking for a flavored lemonade,
look in some cafés or coffee shops.
They might have some good options.
That’s true. Lemonade with berries sounds great.
Now let’s go take a break—
maybe grab a drink—
and we’ll see you after this.
Let’s talk it anyway, let’s talk it anyway
Take me to the day, every day, that’s the way...
Welcome back, friends. We’ve been talking about cold drinks
and lemonade that you can drink with berries in them.
Garrett, what’s your favorite cold drink?
Well, I think the one that I have the most is just
a cup of ice-cold water.
When you’re thirsty, there’s nothing better than water.
But I do like iced coffee a lot.
Right. And I like to drink cold soy milk.
Now let’s continue our lesson.
Is lemonade your favorite cold drink?
Maybe. I also like iced tea with lots of sugar.
I like iced tea without sugar.
And I like iced coffee or cold brew coffee too.
I also like those.
But sometimes I just want a glass of cool water.
That’s also good.
Hey, let’s go get that lemonade. I’m thirsty now!
Sam also wants to know what Susie’s favorite cold drink is.
So he asks her:
"Is lemonade your favorite cold drink?"
Is it her favorite? Does she like it more than anything else?
Well, Susie says "Maybe."
But she also likes other things. She also likes iced tea.
Right, friends, did you hear the word ice and the word iced?
Yes, we’re talking about iced tea.
That means we’re talking about tea
that you drink when you add ice cubes to it.
Yeah, it’s been iced—you’ve added ice to it.
Sometimes, if you don’t add ice to a drink
but it is as cold as something with ice,
we might still use that word iced,
even though there isn’t ice.
Right. And what is ice?
It’s when you take water and you freeze it,
and it becomes hard.
That is what ice is.
Right. Well, Susie likes iced tea with lots of sugar.
She likes sweet iced tea.
And friends, "with lots of sugar" is today’s
calendar phrase.

With lots of sugar.
With lots of sugar.
Would you like iced tea? Okay—with lots of sugar.
Or maybe lemonade? Okay—
With lots of sugar.
Or maybe iced coffee?
Okay—with lots of sugar.
Well, here’s lots of sugar, okay?
But where’s my drink?
With lots of sugar.
With lots of sugar.

Well, Sam tells us that he likes iced tea without sugar.
This means you do not add any sugar to this iced tea.
Yeah, some people don’t need sweetness to enjoy a drink.
I also like iced tea without sugar.
And I also like the other things Sam mentioned.
He says: “I like iced coffee or cold brew coffee too.”
So we have a little bit of a difference there.
Okay, let’s talk about iced coffee.
When you add ice cubes and pour hot coffee
or regular room temperature coffee into that cup,
then you get iced coffee.
Look, Garrett, what’s cold brew coffee?
Right. Well, when you make coffee at first,
the water needs to be hot—
that’s how you get that coffee flavor
out of the coffee beans.
But if you want to drink cold coffee,
there are a few different ways to make it cold.
One way is cold brew.
This way actually doesn’t use hot water at all.
You just brew it cold, but over a long time—
sometimes twenty-four hours, right?
You can even put that pitcher or container
where you brew the coffee into your fridge.
Then the coffee will sit there,
and it will be cold and ready for you
when you want to drink it.
Well, Susie also likes those,
but Sam sometimes doesn’t want any of these fancy drinks.
He just wants a glass of cool water.
Cool water is water that is not hot—
maybe it is room temperature,
but you don’t add ice cubes to cool water, right?
It’s just a little cool.
"But sometimes I just want a glass of cool water."
片語 a glass of cool water 指的是一杯冷水。
通常冷飲會用 a glass of + 名詞,而熱飲則會用 a cup of + 名詞。
Ivan drinks a glass of milk every morning.
Ivan
Would you like a glass of orange juice?
I’d always start my day with a cup of coffee.
There are six cups of tea on the table.
Thank you so much, Sonya.
Well, after talking about all these great cool drinks,
Sam and Susie are ready to go and get that lemonade, right?
Susie says: “Let’s go get that lemonade. I’m thirsty!”
And friends, now it’s time for us to review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today:
lemonade
Let’s drink some lemonade.
juice
What kind of juice do you want?
blueberry
She likes blueberry cake.
iced
Do you drink iced coffee?
cool
I want a cool drink.
Oh friends, those are your keywords for today!
Keep on practicing them—
you’re doing great!
And now it’s your turn!
The keywords for today are lemonade, juice,
blueberry, iced, and cool.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence!
First one:
Do you want any ___ pie?
It’s a fruit.
You’re right—Do you want any blueberry pie?
Next:
It’s nice and ___ in here. You need an adjective here.
Correct: It’s nice and cool in here.
Next:
He’s drinking orange ___. This is easy.
He’s drinking orange juice.
Next:
I want some ___ tea. Put ice in your tea and you get...?
Correct: I want some iced tea.
Last one:
Do you want any ___? This is easy too.
Do you want any lemonade?
That was fun! Come back again for Your Turn!
I’m thirsty!
One, two, let’s review!
Let’s not... it’s too hot!
It’s summer and it is hot outside.
But we still need to review.
Okay, but I need a cold drink.
A cold drink? Okay—what do you want?
Maybe lemonade.
Yeah! Lemonade with berries in it.
How about blueberry lemonade?
Or maybe strawberry.
Is that your favorite cold drink?
Yes—no—wait!
I also like iced tea.
Oh, me too! With sugar—lots of sugar!
That’s too sweet! No sugar for me.
Another favorite drink is iced coffee.
And cold brew is good too.
I also like those, of course.
A glass of cool water is another good choice.
Well, I think we should get lemonade after we review.
Hazel, I think we should get lemonade now!
Uh yeah, okay! Let’s get lemonade!
I am thirsty.
Me too. Let’s review later! (hahaha)
Hi, I’m Detective Carter.
I have a problem.
I have some items and I need to find one that is different.
Can you help me find the odd one out?
I have four things.
Three are the same.
One is odd. It is different from the other three.
Can you find the odd one?
Blueberry, tangerine, lemonade, and pineapple.
Do you see the different item?
The answer is lemonade.
Blueberries, tangerines, and pineapples are fruits.
Lemonade is a drink. It is not a fruit—so it is different.
Let’s do another one:
Lemonade, sour, lemon, and sugar.
Wow, this sounds like a nice drink.
But which word is not the same?
Did you say sour?
You’re right!
Lemonade, lemon, and sugar are the same.
Sour is a flavor.
It is not something you put in your drink—so sour is the odd one.
Good work!
You helped me find the odd one out.
See you next time, friends!
Friends, today we talked about two words: cool and cold.
A cool drink could be a drink
you take out from your refrigerator—like water that you put in the fridge.
But a cold drink would be even colder than that.
It might even have ice in it.
It’s just like the difference between those words:
warm and hot.
If something is warm, it’s not too hot—it’s just a little hot.
But if something is hot, when you touch it,
you might feel like you cannot touch it—because it’s too hot.
It might hurt your hand!
Well friends, when it’s hot outside,
we want a cool or a cold drink.
So hopefully you can find one
and cool down in this hot weather, right?
One drink I like is a fruit smoothie.
What you do is:
You take fruit,
you take some ice cubes, and you can add milk.
Then you blend it together for a nice cold drink.
At the right point,
you can add whatever you’d like—
even blueberries and strawberries!
All right friends,
we hope to see you again tomorrow!
That’s right—here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye! 👋

Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English!
My name is Garret.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is food, and our title is "I’m Thirsty."
Thirsty—not for something to eat, but for something to drink.
Right! When you want something to drink, you can say you’re thirsty.
And when you want something to eat, you can say, "I’m hungry."
Right! These are ways that you feel.
They are things that your body is telling you, because you need something to keep you going—with energy!
Right, and it’s hot outside, so you’re thirsty.
You need a cold drink.
What will you choose?
What would you like to have?
Maybe you just want a simple glass of cool water.
That will help you when you’re thirsty.
Or maybe you want some lemonade.
Again, lemonade is lemon juice, water, and sugar.
Exactly. You can even add other things to it.
You can have lemonade with berries, like blueberries or strawberries.
That sounds great!
You might want iced tea or iced coffee.
Both of those are always great.
And you can even combine some of these things.
I know we all love iced tea mixed with lemonade.
That is a great combination.
It sure is!
Or maybe you want some cold juice, or even cold brew coffee.
Well friends, as we go into our lesson today, let’s try to find our Find It answer.
Here’s our question:
How does Sarah like her bubble tea?
How does Sarah like her bubble tea?
Think about this as we go and learn our keywords from Sonya.
Sara
You put slices of cucumber, fresh mint leaves, and a little sugar in water.
James
Watermelon juice.
I’d also like papaya milk.
Bubble tea is the best!
It’s sweet and delicious.
What are you drinking today, Sarah?
Just water?
No, because it’s so hot, I’m drinking a cucumber mint water.
Cucumber mint water?
Yes!
You put slices of cucumber, fresh mint leaves, and a little sugar in water.
It tastes great!
Hmm, I’ll have to try that.
What are you drinking?
Watermelon juice. It’s one of my favorite summer drinks.
So we start with James asking Sarah,
"What are you drinking today?"
Sarah says, "Just water?"
He’s asking her these questions because he sees that she is drinking something, right?
Sometimes that question, "What are you drinking today?" could mean:
"What are you drinking right now?"
Or it could mean:
"What are you drinking throughout the day?"
Well, what does Sarah have to say?
Sarah is not drinking just water.
"Just water" means there’s nothing else in the water.
She has added cucumbers and mint in her water.
That makes it a cucumber mint water.
Let’s talk about some of those things.
Cucumber is a kind of vegetable.
Technically, it’s actually a fruit, but we use it as a vegetable.
It’s long and green, and many people like to put it in water.
It gives the water a very fresh flavor.
Right! And mint is a kind of plant.
It has little green leaves, and people add it to tea.
It might taste just a little spicy.
Yeah, it might taste kind of like your toothpaste, actually.
That’s often a mint flavor.
But you can use that in drinks and foods too.
Right! And earlier we heard the word:
"Oh, what are you drinking? A cucumber mint water?"
Sonya, can you help us with this?
Sarah
Because it’s so hot, I’m drinking a cucumber mint water.
劇中 "a cucumber mint water" 其實是 "a glass of cucumber mint water"(一杯),但省略了 glass of。
I’d like two Cokes and a water, please.
J bought a soda to go with his burger.
I’d like a green tea, please.
Thank you, Sonya.
James doesn’t seem to know what kind of drink this is, so he asks,
“Cucumber mint water?”
Yes. He sounds a little confused, but yes, this is what Sarah is having.
And here’s how she made it:
She says, “You put slices of cucumber, fresh mint leaves, and a little sugar in water.”
She says it tastes great.
I think I would try it without the sugar.
Right, it would taste more natural.
Now, if you slice something, it means you are cutting it into thin pieces.
So you can slice the cucumber into slices.
Yeah, one slice of cucumber is one amount of something.
You can use all sorts of other words for this—like a piece of something, or even a bit or a little of it.
So Sarah is going to add slices—she will add more than one piece of cucumber in her cucumber mint water.
Well, James didn’t know about this drink before, but he is interested.
He says, “I’ll have to try that.”
And friends, “I’ll have to try that” is today’s calendar phrase:

I’ll have to try that.
I’ll have to try that.
Sometimes I drink watermelon juice.
Oh, I’ll have to try that.
Sometimes I drink papaya milk.
Mmm, oh—I’ll have to try that.
And sometimes I drink bubble tea.
Oh, I’ll have to try that.
Usually I just drink water.
Just water? Oh—I’ll have to try that.
Hmm.
I’ll have to try that.
I’ll have to try that.

Now Sarah wants to know what James is drinking, so she asks,
“What are you drinking?”
What is James drinking?
He’s having watermelon juice.
He says it’s one of his favorite summer drinks.
Yes, watermelon juice is a very popular summer drink.
Many people drink this in the summer.
Let’s talk about this word: watermelon.
A watermelon is a fruit.
It’s green on the outside.
It has a hard skin, and inside, it can be red, orange, or yellow.
It usually has seeds.
Yeah, the red kind is probably the most common.
You don’t have to eat those seeds.
And you can push all the water out of that fruit and have watermelon juice.
Right, friends—now it’s time for us to take a break.
Maybe go and get a cup of watermelon juice.
We’ll see you after this!
Let’s Talk in English. Let’s Talk in English every day, every day, fast away.
Friends, welcome back!
What kind of summer drink do you like to drink?
Right—what kinds of fruits do you like in those drinks?
Do you like watermelon?
Or maybe something else, like cucumber?
Right, and I’ve never heard of cucumber mint water.
I think I’ll have to ask Sarah how she makes it.
Yeah, she did give us some tips earlier.
I know cucumber water is nice.
Right, and I like to add slices of lemon in water as well.
Friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
Fruit juice is a good summer drink.
I also like papaya milk.
That is good.
And of course—bubble tea is the best.
It’s sweet and delicious.
I agree, but I don’t like it too sweet.
It’s good with lots of ice, but just a little sugar.
True.
There are so many delicious cold summer drinks.
I know—and I like them all!
Sarah tells us that fruit juice is a good summer drink.
This means it’s a good choice to drink fruit juices in the summer.
Yeah, fruit juices can be great.
They are pretty sweet, but they have some vitamins in there that are good for your body and can help you when you’re thirsty.
Now, Sarah tells us about another kind of drink with fruits in it.
This is papaya milk.
Papaya milk is a drink where you take a fruit called papaya,
and you add water or milk and ice cubes to it.
Right—and then usually you blend it all up so you can drink it right down.
I had never tried this before I came to Asia.
It’s very popular there.
Right, let’s talk about this fruit—a papaya.
A papaya is a fruit that grows in warm places.
It grows on a tree.
It can be round or long, and the fruit itself is yellow or orange.
It has a skin on the outside, and usually lots of small seeds that you scoop out, because you don’t eat it.
Right.
Well, James now goes on to say what he thinks is the best drink.
He says, “Bubble tea is the best.”
Now, this is a drink that feels like it’s taken over the whole world.
It’s popular all over the place.
Sometimes we call it boba tea.
Right—and what is it?
Well, people add little balls called tapioca balls into tea.
These balls are very chewy, and people like the taste of it when you add it to the tea.
All right.
There’s often also milk in there as well.
This is a sweet drink. That is one of our key words today.
Sweet things have sugar in them, so they taste nice.
Kids love sweet things.
They sure do.
Another name for bubble tea is pearl milk tea,
because you can call those bubbles pearls as well.
Right—they’re little round things.
Friends, I think it’s time for us to answer our Find It question:
How does Sarah like her bubble tea?
She likes it with lots of ice but just a little sugar.
Sarah doesn’t like it when you add too much sugar to her bubble tea.
All right.
When you order bubble tea, there are often a lot of choices—
some different flavors, and you can choose how sweet and how cold you want it.
Sarah says she doesn’t like it too sweet.
She wants just a little sugar.
And we want to know just a little more about that from Sonya.
It’s good with lots of ice but just a little sugar.
Something is good with ... but just a little ..."
Popcorn is good with butter, but just a little salt.
Dumplings are good with soy sauce, but just a little garlic.
Pizza is good with a lot of cheese, but just a little pepper.
Thank you, Sonya.
Well, I agree with James.
There are so many delicious cold summer drinks!
There sure are!
And earlier, James said,
“Bubble tea is the best.”
Now, if you say something is the best,
maybe it’s the one you like the most,
or it’s one of your favorites.
Do you have a favorite, friends?
Do you have a drink that you think is the best?
I think it changes for me.
Sometimes I like one thing, sometimes another.
That’s true.
Now let’s go and review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today:
Slice
She gave him a slice of cake.
Watermelon
Watermelon is her favorite fruit.
Papaya
I often eat papaya for breakfast.
Bubble tea
Do you want some bubble tea?
Sweet
He likes sweet drinks.
Friends, those are your sweet keywords for today.
Keep on practicing them.
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are:
Slices, watermelon, papaya, bubble tea, and sweet.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence:
She drinks ___ every day. I like to drink this too.
→ She drinks bubble tea every day.
He puts orange ___ in his water. You can cut an orange into...
→ You’re right. He puts orange slices in his water.
___ is a delicious fruit. It’s bright orange on the inside.
→ Correct. Papaya is a delicious fruit.
Put sugar in the tea to make it ___.
→ This is easy. Put sugar in the tea to make it sweet.
He ate four slices of ___.
→ Good job. He ate four slices of watermelon.
Friends, that’s all for today.
Join me again for Your Turn!
Fruit juice is a good summer drink.
I also like papaya milk. That is good.
And of course, bubble tea is the best—it's sweet and delicious.
I agree, but I don’t like it too sweet.
It’s good with lots of ice, but just a little sugar.
True!
There are so many delicious cold summer drinks.
I know—and I like them all!
One, two—let’s review!
Ah, David, what are you doing?
I’m enjoying a cold drink on a hot day.
Okay, sounds good.
So what are you drinking today?
Cucumber mint water.
Cucumber mint water? That’s new to me.
It’s slices of cucumber, fresh mint leaves, and a little sugar in water.
Oh, I’ll have to try that!
You should—it tastes great!
So what are you drinking?
One of my favorite summer drinks—watermelon juice.
