Oliver knew that clothes make the man. As the CEO of a successful tech startup, he made it a point to dress the part, always looking professional. Today, he was dressed to kill in a blue suit, white shirt, and silk tie. He was ready to pitch his company’s latest innovation to some potential investors.

We read right here: “Mixing fashion and business paid off.” Now, this is kind of an interesting phrase because it’s related to a phrase that we say in English: “Don’t mix business and pleasure.” So that’s kind of where this phrase is coming from. And usually, this means that you shouldn’t become friends with or date people at the office, because when you mix business and pleasure, there could be problems.
That’s right. Normally, when you use the word "mixing," it’s for two things that are kind of different. So here, we see mixing fashion (the way you dress) and business. What happens when you combine those two things? Well, it pays off. “Pays off” means it produces success, right? Just like you would get paid for doing a good job, you’d get paid money. Here, you get paid in other ways. But what are those other ways? Well, we go to the story of a man named Oliver.
That’s right. Oliver knew that clothes make the man.
Here’s our first idiom, friends: When we say “clothes make the man,” what does that mean? Well, “clothes make the man” means that what you wear determines or decides what and how people think about you, right? Have you ever been walking down the street and you see someone dressed a certain way and you get an idea of who they are? That’s definitely happened to me before.
We read on:
As the CEO of a successful tech startup, he made it a point to dress the part, always looking professional.
Here’s the next phrase we want to talk about, friends: “To dress the part.”
Alright, dressing the part means dressing in a way that is expected of the role or the job that you have. So if you’re a student wearing a backpack, maybe some sneakers is part of dressing the part.
That’s right. Here’s another example: He was in charge and always dressed the part. You can imagine how someone who is in charge might dress. That would be different from anybody else.
Okay, so “dress the part” — that’s our next phrase.
We have another one in the next sentence:
Today, he was dressed to kill in a blue suit, white shirt, and silk tie.
Now, when someone is dressed to kill, it means that they’re wearing very fancy and attractive clothes. And this is because they want people to notice them or be attracted to them.
That’s right. You could tell your friend, “Wow, you’re dressed to kill! You look really fashionable today!”
And there’s another expression: If looks could kill. Normally, if someone looks really good, you say, “Wow, if looks could kill!” and you just kind of leave it at that. It means if being good looking would make people die, then you would cause people to die because you’re looking great. It’s a fun English expression!
Okay, we have one more thing that we want to look at in this next sentence:
He was ready to pitch his company’s latest innovation to some potential investors.
Let’s talk about what an investor is.
An investor is a person or an organization who puts money into some type of financial scheme or some type of plan, and because they’re doing this, they are hoping to make a profit.
That’s right. They are investing. To invest is the verb. There, the investors put a lot of money into the new company.
Well, friends, it’s time to learn more about dressing for success. Let’s go to the next reading.

Oliver’s assistant, Emma, was in the office early making sure everything was set for the presentation. She also had a flair for fashion and always looked impeccable, even when she was doing everyday tasks. Today, she was dressed to the nines in a fashionable black dress and high heels.

Emma is Oliver’s assistant. An assistant is someone that helps you or assists you, right? But we use this word for a specific job in the office. An office assistant is someone that makes sure the jobs get done, and they can help in a lot of different ways.
That’s right. A lot of times assistants help with scheduling or, as we see in this sentence, setting up for the presentation.
The full sentence reads:
Oliver’s assistant, Emma, was in the office early making sure everything was set for the presentation.
What does that mean?
If something is set for something else, it means it’s already right. If you have things set in their proper place, they are placed in the right place to get something done. Sometimes we’ll say that in a race you say “ready, set, go” when you run a race.
That’s right. And we often use “set” with the word “for” as well. So, for example, you could say, “Everything is set for the party tonight.” Everything is already in place.
We read on here:
She also had a flair for fashion. What does it mean?
If you have a flair for something, a flair literally just means a talent, but when you use the word “flair” instead of “talent,” it means generally you’re showing some kind of talent, right? You had a flair for public speaking.
That’s right. And it usually means that you do it in such a way that everyone can see, and everyone can see that you have this talent.
But we see here that she always looked impeccable, even when she was doing everyday tasks. What does it mean?
If someone looks impeccable, it means they look perfect. There is nothing wrong with their outfit, and “impeccable” comes from the Latin word for “sins,” so if someone is impeccable, it means they have no “sins”—they’re perfect!
Impeccable fashion! Boy, that I wish, right? Yeah, there’s no way that while I’m doing everyday tasks, I could look impeccable. What about you, friends? Do you always look impeccable, or do you look impeccable just when you go out like I do?
Okay, but we’re reading on here:
Today she was dressed to the nines.
Let’s stop there for a minute before we continue. If someone is dressed to the nines, it means that they’re dressed pretty fancy, right?
Definitely, you could say I was dressed to the nines at my sister’s wedding. I wanted everything to be perfect for her big day.
That’s right! So if you’re dressed to the nines, it means that everything on you is fancy. Usually, we won’t say this about someone who’s wearing tennis shoes or something casual. They’re usually wearing a fancy dress, a suit, or something like that.
And we get a description of what Emma was actually wearing here, don’t we?
Yes, she’s wearing a fashionable black dress, something that’s stylish, and high heels. We’ll talk about high heels a lot more later this month, and we’ll learn about the history of high heels. Hope you’ll join us!
But high heels, what are they, Anne-Marie?
Well, they’re shoes that have kind of a very high heel on the back, kind of like a stick sometimes. We usually only use the phrase "high heels" when the heel of the shoe is very thin. So we do have shoes that can make you taller as well, and maybe they have kind of like a block on the end, but usually, we call those wedges or something else like that. Heels literally just have that long stick in the back, yeah.
We’ll learn a lot more about the different words you use to describe shoes that make you taller, and we’ll learn why we have those. But for now, it’s time for today’s InfoCloud!

Oliver reminded himself not to judge a book by its cover. Friends, you might have already heard us use this phrase several times today.
What does it exactly mean, Jon?
Well, it means to judge or evaluate—make an opinion about something based on the first thing you see. Just like the cover of a book is not really what’s inside, you’re judging someone by their appearance.
Here’s an example:
The little restaurant looked old and run down, but I decided not to judge a book by its cover.
That’s right! Well, he reminded himself not to judge Mr. Thompson by his cover, right? And we read:
Mr. Thompson had a reputation for being an intelligent and wise investor despite his old-hat appearance.
Okay, "intelligent" means smart, right? Able to think clearly. "Old hat"—that’s an interesting phrase!
It certainly is! If something is "old hat," it means that it is outdated, it’s not modern, it’s not exciting. So here, we’re saying that Mr. Thompson wasn’t only out of fashion, he looked "old hat." He did not look very exciting.
That’s right!
Okay, so we’ve got these words: "out of fashion," "out of date," "seen better days," and "old hat." These are all fun things to use! But we read, as the meeting began, Oliver launched into—or started—his sales pitch.

Well, Anne-Marie, I love the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve." It doesn’t really have to do with describing fashion, but when you wear, normally your sleeve is this part of your shirt or your clothes, right? Sometimes people will have a logo on there that says something about their clothing. But if you wear your heart on your sleeve, you’re being open and honest.
Sometimes I wish that people wore their hearts on their sleeves more. It would be a better way of being friends.

Well, it means that you find something or someone attractive or interesting, and this usually means that it makes you think about them or the situation more.
And it’s true; she was taken with his presentation.
We learn a little bit more about her in the next sentence.
How does this continue, John?
Well, we learned that she also cares about fashion and is good at dressing the part. We read, "She was known for her fashion-forward sense and often made a fashion statement with her bold choices."
Okay, we’ve got a few important words there. First of all, fashion-forward.
If you are fashion-forward, it means that you are following the latest trends in fashion.
So, fashion is always changing, right? We have all four seasons, and recently, we learned about how there are even more seasons now because a lot of companies are changing fashions every week with the rise of social media.
So, I think now being fashion-forward means something a little different than it did 10 or 20 years ago.
It means she is really keeping up with fashion trends.
That’s right! It can be exhausting to be fashion-forward.
Are you fashion-forward?
Well, we read another really important word: "a fashion-forward sense."
And normally we say someone’s fashion sense is good or bad. The "sense" means your understanding and ability to do or navigate something, right?
But it’s a word that you should know: fashion sense.
Here, she has a fashion-forward sense, so it’s a good fashion sense.
That’s right! And as John said, the words that we use with this are "good fashion sense" or "bad fashion sense."
Okay, so we see here that Miss Delgado usually makes bold choices when it comes to fashion, and we read on, "Today was no different."
Now, this is an interesting phrase, friends. Because when we say "Today was no different," it means that today is the same as it’s always been.
She was wearing a striking red blazer that turned heads.
Now, a blazer is a jacket, and usually, it means that it’s not part of a full suit, but you can still wear it in more formal situations.
That’s right. You’ll see a lot of blazers in school uniforms, right? It’s kind of the classic school jacket you might see in movies or wear at your own school.
It’s definitely a bold or a strong choice to wear a red blazer. It’s striking, and it turns heads.
Turning heads means it gets people’s attention, right?
Yeah, that’s right. So, a blazer isn’t part of a full suit, but if the coat is part of a full suit, we have a different word for that, and that is a suit jacket.
So those are two different things, friends. And yes, this red blazer did turn heads!
If something turns heads, it means it really makes people turn their head to look at it.
Here’s another way you could use that:
Her new haircut made everyone turn heads.
Wow, I hope your English ability really turns heads!

At the end of the presentation, the investors were visibly impressed.
Mr. Thompson shook Oliver’s hand. "You’ve knocked our socks off. I see a bright future, and we want to be part of it."

Sometimes, you can’t tell when people are impressed with you, right?
But here, these investors were visibly impressed.
That’s right! We normally don’t say "they were invisibly impressed," by the way.
But "visibly," like you say, means you can tell that they thought it was a good presentation.
And Mr. Thompson shook Oliver’s hand. What does he say?
He says, "You’ve knocked our socks off. I see a bright future, and we want to be a part of it."
This is such an interesting phrase, "knock your socks off."
Yeah, that’s right! "Knock your socks off" doesn’t literally mean that he made their socks fall off, but it means that he’s done a really good job and impressed them a lot.
(令人驚奇；令人刮目相看) I often see this phrase used with food as well. Like, if you really think something is delicious or really spicy, you could say that it "knocks your socks off."
For example,
That spicy salsa will really knock your socks off!
This phrase is interesting too, John, and I tried to find it, but I couldn’t.
But I remember this phrase being used in commercials when I was growing up.
Like, I can still hear it in my mind: "It’ll knock your socks off!"
But I can’t remember the product.
Yeah, "knock your socks off" is not always something that’s good, too.
You could say,
"Wow, that really knocked my socks off!"
That really affected me a lot.
But something definitely makes an impression if it knocks your socks off.
We’ll try to find that commercial.
Yeah, exactly! Okay, I see a bright future.
Mr. Thompson says,
"We want to be a part of it."
We use bright future to talk about somebody’s future or their career that’s going to happen later, and it usually means that they are very likely to be successful or happy in the future.
That’s right! You could also say the future is looking bright. So that again gives the idea of having hope; you can really see a positive outcome when you look at the current behavior.
I hope you all have a bright future if you’ve been studying your English with us. I hope that the future is looking bright for you.
We also hear a little bit from Ms. Delgado. She added, “I agree. You’ve clearly thought this through, and you even dressed the part.” We already learned dress the part, didn’t we?
That’s right. So just to review, friends, if you dress the part, it means you dress in a way that is appropriate for your position or for the situation.
So of course, if you’re in management in a company, you should dress the part. Don’t be going to work in a casual way. If you’re a student, you should also dress the part — dress in a way that is appropriate for a student to dress.
We have one more sentence in this section:
"It’s inspiring to see someone who understands the power of a strong image."
Yeah, the power of means the strength of or the influence of a strong image. That image again is the way something looks.
And we use this phrase the power of something in other ways as well. For example, you could say the power of good or the power of love, and it’s just saying that that thing at the end of that phrase has some type of influence or changes things in some way.
That’s right. We’re hoping the power of English will give you the power of friendship as you meet people and practice together.

That would make you stand out, but not in a good way.
There are many times in life when it’s important to dress the part, like when you go to a job interview or a wedding. If you look the part, you will probably have more confidence.
That’s right. You will feel like you fit into the environment when you dress the part, and you may even get a more positive response from others.

We read here:

There are two great phrases here that we need to talk about. Emma says, It’s safe to say — this means if you say, It’s safe to say blank, it means it is likely true that blank.
So how can you use that in a sentence?
For example, you could say, It’s safe to say it’s probably going to rain all afternoon now.
You would say this when maybe you’ve checked the weather, and you can be outside and see that it truly is raining, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon.
It’s safe to say it’s probably going to rain all afternoon.
But we have another phrase here that Emma says: We’re going places.
If you say we’re going places or he’s going places, it means that someone is showing a lot of talent, a lot of ability, and they are likely to become very successful.
That’s right. I think this is a pretty American thing to say.
Wow, you’re really going places.
Remember, as English was developing in America, a lot of people lived in small towns. They didn’t get to go places unless they had a special talent or skill.
So learning a skill can help you go places, right?
That’s right.
So, Oliver realizes here that having Emma to support him is really important, and that’s kind of how our story is concluding.
Oliver smiled. “Thanks, Emma. I couldn’t have done it without your support.”
So he’s realized that she has made a contribution to this presentation.
And he realizes something about fashion:
Oliver realized we read that while looking the part was important, having a team that supported you was invaluable.
Again, looking the part, we learned yesterday, means to look like the type of person that you are portraying.
For example, if you’re in business, like Oliver, dressing up to look like a professional business person is important.
That’s right. So to dress the part or to look the part, they have very similar meanings. The difference here is that if you are dressing the part, you are trying on purpose to look a certain way. If you look the part, maybe you didn’t necessarily dress that way on purpose, but you look like you should be in that position.
These phrases are very similar, but they have slightly different meanings. But we also see this word invaluable here. If something is invaluable, it means you can’t put a value on it.
That’s right, it is priceless. So, what is invaluable to you, friends?
I think they make a good point that having a good team is invaluable.
Finally, we read that they had shown something:
They had shown that success came from a blend of style, substance, and enthusiasm.
A blend means a combination.
What does that word enthusiasm mean?
Well, if someone has enthusiasm for something, it means that they are excited to do it or happy to do it.
For example, if you really like the topic you’re learning in school, maybe you do your homework assignment with enthusiasm. It doesn’t feel hard to do it; it doesn’t feel like something you don’t want to do. You enjoy learning about that topic.
That’s right. Enthusiasm — if someone has a lot of enthusiasm, you can say they are enthused. It’s a word you might not see a lot, but when you do, you’ll know it.

What impresses you about a presentation and why?
Wow, well, I love a presentation that is very clean, like there’s not too much extra information in there, and it’s very focused. Also, if someone dresses the part, I do notice. Interesting, the two things that are most important to me are, first of all, having all of the details and everything thought of, so someone has really done their research and has answers to someone’s questions.
And second of all, passion. I really like to watch presentations when people are passionate about what they are presenting.
