１９８１／１９８２年，英國電子樂團流行尖端（Depeche Mode）以首張大碟［Speak & Spell／說話與拼字］走紅．

１９８２年９月，流行尖端乘勝追擊，推出第二張大碟［A Broken Frame／破碎的框架］．

這張專輯全部由 Martin Gore 創作，在 Vince Clarke 於 1981年 12月離隊並與歌手 Alison Moyet 組成 Yazoo 後，以三人組合的形式錄製完成。

Alan Wilder接替Clarke 的位置，最初只是作為巡迴樂手加入樂團。因此，他沒有參與［A Broken Frame］的錄製，但在專輯發行後的一個月，即1982 年10月，他被提拔為正式樂團成員。

１９８２年８月，流行尖端推出第二單曲［Leave in Silence／默默離開］

由團員Martin Core譜寫　流行尖端＋Daniel Miller共同製作成一首合成流行曲，

節拍輕快．在冷漠的電子編曲中，主唱的詮釋帶有一股理性的情感．

《Leave in Silence》是 Clarke 離隊後樂團共同創作的第一首新歌，標誌樂團在創作和音樂風格上進入一個全新的「創作階段」。

Gore 回憶說，這首歌是樂隊的“轉折點”，標誌著他們開始在沒有 Clarke 的情況下獨立發展。

 

這首歌的創作初衷是為了比樂團之前的流行歌曲更具實驗性。

主唱Dave Gahan後來談到這首歌時說：“它某種程度上概括了整張第二張專輯。我們不想繼續創作這些輕鬆的流行歌曲，而是決定嘗試一些新的東西。Martin很擅長寫流行歌曲，但我們想嘗試一些完全不同的東西，看看我們能不能做到。”
