１９３６年３月生於英屬肯亞奈洛比的羅傑．惠特克（Roger Whittaker,1936-20213）是英國創作歌手、樂手，父母為英國人．
他的音樂風格多元，融合了民謠和流行歌曲，後者時而低吟淺唱，時而流行搖滾。他以其渾厚的男中音、標誌性的口哨技巧以及精湛的吉他技藝而聞名
１９５６年退伍後，他進入南非開普敦大學學習醫學，並在休假期間在奈洛比的赤道俱樂部演出。
後來他離開大學，追隨母親的腳步，加入了公務員教育部門，成為一名教師。
１９５９年，惠特克移居英國繼續教學生涯。

此曲由羅傑．惠特克＋Ron A. Webster創作，Denis Preston製作成一首民謠／流行／抒情曲，

據惠特克本人所述，１９７５年，一位亞特蘭大電台節目總監的妻子在加拿大旅行時，偶然在廣播裡聽到惠特克四年前的錄音。
回到美國後，她請丈夫在電台播放這首歌。在丈夫播放幾遍後，聽眾紛紛打電話到電台詢問歌曲和歌手的更多信息，唱片公司在１９７４年１０月順勢推出單曲．
很快，［The Last Farewell／最後的告別］就登上排行榜。
