１９８３年９月, ２０歲的凡妮莎威廉絲（Vanessa Williams，舊譯‘范妮莎威廉斯’） 成為有史以來第一位拿下美國小姐（Miss American 1984）后冠的非裔黑人

但因成人雜誌〔閣樓〕刊登１９８２年威廉絲當攝影師助理為老板拍攝的藝術裸照

導致被摘掉后冠 　陷入人生低潮

爾後凡妮莎決定以演戲與音樂重新復出。

 

１９８７年初　凡妮莎與Wing／Mercury唱片簽下合約

１９８８年２月推出首張大碟〔The Right Stuff／正確事物〕

製作群包括Rex Salas（六首）Amir-Salaam Bayyan，David Paul Bryant，Lewis A. Martinee，Donald Robinson，Larry Robinson，Darryl Ross等。

前兩首主打在Billboard黑人榜與舞曲榜獲得佳績

第三主打［Dreamin］登上Billboard單曲榜＃８　副榜－黑人榜冠軍, 成人當代榜亞軍

讓威廉絲首度在主流市場突破

 

１９８９年１月, 凡妮莎推出第四主打［Darlin I／親愛的,我］

由Rex Salas＋Kenny Harris譜寫, Rex Salas製作成一首R&B／Quiet Storm抒情曲,

在舒緩的節奏間,  威廉絲柔情演繹

MV以單色拍成, 頗有質感。

 

［Darlin I］成為凡妮莎第三首打入Billboard單曲榜的歌曲（＃８８）

副榜－黑人榜＃１０, 成人當代榜＃１０

 

 

在一連串單曲的推波助瀾下　〔The Right Stuff〕大碟登上Billboard專輯榜＃３８　副榜－黑人專輯榜＃１８

在美國拿到金唱片（５０萬張＋）

也為凡妮莎拿到三項葛萊美獎提名, 奠定她在歌壇的聲名。
