1.Definition of waterproof stepper motors

A waterproof stepper motor is a stepper motor with waterproof, dustproof, high temperature resistance and other characteristics, which can operate normally in harsh environments. It consists of multiple electromagnetic coils, which change the force generated by the magnetic field by controlling the current of the coils, thereby driving the motor to rotate. Compared with other stepper motors, the main difference of waterproof stepper motors is that their structural design can prevent water, dust, etc. from entering the motor, so that they can work normally in underwater environments.

2.Waterproof level of waterproof stepper motors

1‌.IP64‌: Indicates that the motor can completely prevent dust from entering and can prevent liquid splashing.

‌2.IP65‌: Indicates that the motor can completely prevent dust from entering and can prevent low-pressure water gun spraying.

3‌.IP68‌: Indicates that the motor can be immersed in water for a long time under a certain pressure, usually used in underwater environments.

3.Waterproof principles of waterproof stepper motors

1.Mechanical waterproofing: Protect the circuits and components inside the stepper motor through special sealing structures and materials. For example, special sealing structures and materials are used to prevent moisture from entering the motor.

‌2.Coating waterproofing: A special waterproof coating is applied to the surface of the stepper motor housing. This coating not only prevents moisture from entering the motor, but also prevents corrosion.

‌3.Electrical waterproofing: The circuit design and selection of electrical components with better waterproof performance are used to protect the circuit of the stepper motor from moisture damage.

‌4.Special housing: The motor is covered with a special housing, which is usually more expensive but can effectively prevent water damage.

‌5.Waterproof shaft seal: Protect the moving parts of the motor, especially the shaft and bearings. The waterproof shaft seal creates a closed area for the internal workings of the motor to prevent moisture from entering.

‌6.Sealed cable feedthrough: Prevent moisture from entering the motor through the cable by sealing the cable feedthrough.

‌7.Pressure equalization: A pressure regulating chamber is formed inside the stepper motor to regulate the pressure changes caused by temperature and prevent moisture from entering the motor through the pressure difference.

‌8.Anti-corrosion materials or anti-corrosion coatings‌: The outer surface of the motor is made of anti-corrosion materials or has an anti-corrosion layer to ensure that the motor can maintain good condition even in a humid environment‌.

4.Precautions for using waterproof stepper motors

‌1.Environmental adaptability‌: Although waterproof stepper motors have a high level of protection and can be used in humid or dusty environments, it does not mean that they can be immersed in water for a long time. They should be placed in a relatively clean environment as much as possible to avoid long-term immersion in water‌.

‌2.Power connection‌: Make sure that the power supply voltage is appropriate. For motors with DC input, the positive and negative polarities cannot be connected incorrectly. The selection of power supply voltage should match the motor model or current setting value on the drive controller‌.

‌3.Temperature control‌: The temperature of the stepper motor will rise under long-term operation, and excessive temperature may cause damage to the motor. Therefore, ensure that the vents of the motor are unobstructed, clean the vents in time, and avoid blockage‌.

‌4.Cable protection‌: Ensure that the cable is not subjected to torque or vertical load due to external bending force or its own weight, especially at the cable outlet or connection. The cable elbow radius should be as large as possible to avoid immersion of the cable in oil or water.

‌5.Load control‌: Ensure that the radial and axial loads applied to the stepper motor shaft are controlled within the specified value. Using a flexible coupling can reduce the damage to the motor caused by the load.

‌6.Regular inspection‌: Regularly check the motors fixed parts, output shaft, encoder connection line, power connector, etc. to ensure that they are firmly connected and rotate smoothly. Clean the dust and oil on the motor in time to ensure that the motor is in normal condition.

‌7.Installation precautions‌: When installing/removing the coupling parts, do not hit the shaft end directly with a hammer to avoid damaging the encoder. Try to align the shaft end to the best state to avoid vibration or bearing damage.
