1.Basic definitionn of variable frequency drive

A variable frequency drive, also known as a variable speed drive (VSD) or AC drive, is an electronic device that regulates the speed and performance of an electric motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it. VFDs are used in a wide range of applications, from small appliances to large industrial machinery, to improve energy efficiency, enhance control, and provide smooth motor operation.

2.Working principle of variable frequency drive

A variable frequency drive (VFD) controls the speed of an electric motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it. This is achieved by converting incoming AC power into DC power, then back into AC power with a variable frequency, which in turn controls the motor's speed. VFDs are used to improve energy efficiency, provide precise speed control, and enhance motor performance in various applications.

3.Main advantages of variable frequency drive

1.Enhanced Energy Efficiency:Among the most compelling benefits of VFDs is their remarkable ability to enhance energy efficiency, which, in turn, trims down energy expenses. Motors typically constitute a substantial portion of energy consumption, particularly within industrial setups. VFDs come to the rescue by skillfully governing motor speed, particularly when the motor doesn’t require full-throttle power or a consistent pace.

2.Controlled Starting Current:VFDs offer another feather in their cap by effectively managing the startup current. They possess the capability to initiate motors at zero voltage and frequency, which not only minimizes the wear and tear on motors but also extends their operational lifespan, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repair.

3.Equipment Safeguard:Another remarkable aspect of VFDs is their capacity to tailor and limit torque, ensuring that motors do not venture beyond their safe torque limits. This proactive measure shields machinery and equipment, preempting damage and averting potential production disruptions.

4.Voltage Sag Mitigation:Voltage sags, characterized by transient voltage drops, frequently plague industrial settings, often occurring during the activation of sizable AC motor lines. These sags can be detrimental to delicate equipment like computers and sensors.

5.Precision Process Control:In the realm of industrial manufacturing, VFDs prove invaluable for optimizing production processes by allowing fine-tuned control over motor speeds. This optimized operation ensures consistent product quality and aids in the maintenance of stringent quality standards. VFDs can be programmed to run motors at ideal speeds or halt at predefined positions, surpassing other motor control methods in precision.

6.Noise Reduction:While not their primary purpose, VFDs do the service of reducing ambient noise levels by operating motors at lower speeds. This feature is particularly advantageous in industrial environments where lowered ambient noise levels contribute to improved working conditions and smoother communication on the factory floor.

4.Maintenance tips of variable frequency drive

1.Installation:The VFD should not be installed on a vibrating device, or the main circuit connection screw is easy to get loose. As our technical support said, there are a large number of VFDs are damaged because of this reason.

2.Wiring:It is recommended to install an air switch to protect the current value (should not be too large), so the burnt would not be too serious if short circuit happens. The "N" end should not be grounded. Besides, the control line should not be too long, or the control panel will be interfered by the electromagnetic wave what often leads to malfunction and damage. Shielded wire is suggested if the control line is more than 2 meters.

3.Braking unit:It is recommended to use additional brake or mechanical brake to achieve frequent emergency brake. Otherwise, the Inverter would be often impacted by the electrical counter electromotive force that the VFD would have a high failure rate.

4.Cooling fan:If the VFD driver is often running at low speed under 15Hz, it is recommended to add a cooling fan to the motor.

5.Mounting position:Dust and humidity is the most lethal killer to a VFD. Therefore, it is suggested to install VFD in an air-conditioned room or in an electric cabinet with a dust filter. The dust on circuit board and radiator should be cleaned regularly.

6.Regular check to cooling fan:In order to prevent VFD from being damaged because of overheat, so we must check the cooling fan periodically. The cooling fan should be replaced when it makes noises. Please see the tutorial about how to replace VFD cooling fan

7.Power supply:As some factories use generator for power supply, so the VFD is opt to get damaged because of voltage instability. In case like this, voltage stabilization or overvoltage protection device is required in order to protect the VFD.

8.Lightning protection:Although it's a rare occurrence, it's very important. When the VFD is struck by lightning, it will bring heavy damage to it. The VFD for constant pressure water supply system is most likely to be struck by lightning as it has a thunder leading pipe in the sky.

9.Prevent electromagnetic interference:In order to prevent electromagnetic interference, the input, output and control lines should better use shielded wire and the wiring method should not be wrong. If the wiring method is not correct, it will have contrary functions.
