我常看到一些外國觀光客走到廟裡的善書區，只能端詳佛卡，因為滿滿善男信女助印的佛經，裡面沒有半個英文字！

宣化上人長年在美國傳道。為了讓老外看得懂佛經，將許多佛經英譯。在這本小冊子，我們就看到兩個十分有代表性的偈語：開經偈與迴向偈的英文翻譯。

開經偈是唐代武則天所寫。很多後人想取而代之，都自嘆不如。因此傳頌至今：
Verse for opening a sutra

無上甚深微妙法
The unsurpassed, deep, profound, substle, wonderful Dharma,

百千萬劫難遭遇
In hundreds of thousands of millions of cons, is difficult to encounter,

我今見聞得受持
I now see and hear it, receive and uphold it,

願解如來真實義
And I vow to fathom the Tathagata's true and actual meaning.


迴向偈
Verse of transference

願以此功德　莊嚴佛淨土
May the merit and virtue accrued from this work
Adorn the Buddhas' Pure Lands,

上報四重恩　下濟三塗苦
Repaying four kinds of kindness above
And aiding those suffering in the paths below.

若有見聞者　悉發菩提心
May those who see and hear of this
All bring forth the resolve for Bodhi

盡此一報身　同生極樂國
And, when this retribution body is over,
Be born together in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
