“Reprinted Youth”3
“Reprinted Youth” Film Script
Scene | 11 Time | Day Location | Coastal Ring Road, Cai Family Entrance
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Cai Qiu Xiu-duan (Cai Mother), Cai Shi-fen, Neighbor
△ Cai Shi-nan’s sedan drives along the undulating coastal ring road and quickly arrives back at the front door of his home.
△ Cai Shi-nan discovers that the old family house is still the original brick-built, gray-tiled three-sided courtyard house.
Cai Shi-nan: (shocked, speaking to himself) Even the rebuilt three-story concrete Western-style house has been restored back to its original state. I clearly remember five years ago I took out a sum of money and renovated the old house into a three-story concrete Western-style building. I must not be dreaming.
△ Mother Qiu Xiu-duan and younger sister Shi-fen hear the sound of the car engine and walk out to look. Shi-nan gets out of the car, and the mother and daughter curiously look at him.
Qiu Xiu-duan: Is this car the one you just financed and bought? It looks really impressive!
△ Shi-nan does not want to waste words.
Cai Shi-nan: Yes.
Qiu Xiu-duan: And have you eaten yet?
Cai Shi-nan: I ate at the highway rest stop.
△ Shi-fen, who is on break at home in the afternoon, sees Shi-nan getting out of the car carrying two large suitcases.
Cai Shi-fen: Brother, how come you’ve only worked in Hsinchu Science Park for a little over half a year and you’re already carrying two big suitcases back home?
Cai Shi-nan: Well, there was a big earthquake, the company suspended operations and laid people off. Without a job, I had to move back first.
△ The mother and daughter both react—one with a bitter frown and a shake of the head, the other letting out a soft sigh.
△ The suitcases are very heavy; the mother and daughter together lift one up the steps and drag it into the house.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (curious) What’s inside this? Why is it so heavy?
Cai Shi-nan: (dodging the question) Just laptops and some books.
△ Inside the room, Shi-nan places the two suitcases filled with thousand-dollar banknotes on top of a camphor wood wardrobe, changes into casual clothes, washes his face, and returns to the living room.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (concerned) Shi-nan, what are your plans for the future?
Cai Shi-nan: (casual) I’ll rest for a while first, then see if there’s any business I can do.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (helpless) Alright then.
△ A new sedan is parked in the courtyard, attracting the curiosity of neighbors who gather at the entrance to ask questions.
△ Qiu Xiu-duan goes into the courtyard to hang laundry.
Aunt Neighbor A: (curiously asking) Aunt Duan, is this car bought by your son A-nan?
Qiu Xiu-duan: He just bought it not long ago. He said he’s coming back to start a business.
Aunt Neighbor A: That’s right! As long as young people are hardworking and willing to work, in this era it’s better to be your own boss than to be employed—having your own business is better than working for others!
Scene | 12 Time | Day Location | Elementary School Computer Classroom
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Zhang Ya-hui
△ In the elementary school computer classroom, Cai Shi-nan is repairing the mainframe and testing the wiring.
Cai Shi-nan: Found it. It should be a broken connection in the computer main unit wiring due to pulling stress.
△ Cai Shi-nan takes a screwdriver from the upper layer of the toolbox and opens the main unit. He then finds replacement parts from the lower layer of the toolbox and installs them. He closes the case, presses the power button, and the monitor connected to the main unit lights up.
Cai Shi-nan: (satisfied) Done.
Zhang Ya-hui: As expected of a professional! How much should I pay you? I’ll pay first and then apply for reimbursement from the school.
Cai Shi-nan: (smiling) No need, just small parts.
Zhang Ya-hui: Then let me treat you to lunch at my dorm.
Cai Shi-nan: Oh! Alright.
Scene | 13 Time | Day Location | Teacher Dormitory
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Zhang Ya-hui
△ Inside a Japanese-style room in the teacher dormitory, on the dining table are several dishes of fish, meat, and vegetables, and two glass bottles of grape wine. On the wall hang several framed sketch paintings. Cai Shi-nan looks at them one by one carefully.
△ Ya-hui brings out a bowl of fish soup.
Zhang Ya-hui: Dinner is ready, Shi-nan.
△ The two sit on tatami mats around a small square table.
Zhang Ya-hui: When I return to the dorm on normal days, no one talks to me.
Cai Shi-nan: Oh? You’re the only one living in this dorm building?
Zhang Ya-hui: Yes. The colleagues who are already married have all bought houses on the island and live independently.
Cai Shi-nan: Just now while appreciating your paintings, I felt your freehand brushwork has a poetic feeling.
Zhang Ya-hui: (surprised) Oh? You understand painting too?
Cai Shi-nan: A little. Painting was my interest before high school. If not for economic reasons, I would have chosen the path of fine arts.
Zhang Ya-hui: (bitter smile) The path of fine arts? I’m afraid I’d end up like you, stuck teaching in a school. Anyway, enough of that—try my home-cooked dishes and my homemade grape wine.
△ Zhang Ya-hui pours grape wine into a wine glass and hands it to Shi-nan.
Cai Shi-nan: (smiling) Good food and fine wine, your life feels poetic and artistic, very “literary.”
Zhang Ya-hui: (laughs) Thank you for helping the school solve an urgent problem.
Cai Shi-nan: (sighs) Me? I’m supposedly a tech elite, but actually just a wage slave…
Zhang Ya-hui: Oh! I can tell you’re not very happy. Come, drink some grape wine. I brewed it myself—wine can dissolve a thousand sorrows.
△ Ya-hui raises her glass inviting a toast; Shi-nan follows and drinks.
Cai Shi-nan: (smiling) Sweet taste, good wine.
Zhang Ya-hui: About the blind date before, don’t take it to heart.
Cai Shi-nan: Haha! That’s what I should be saying.
Zhang Ya-hui: It was all my father’s arrangement. Honestly, I don’t like him doing that.
Cai Shi-nan: I can understand your father’s thinking.
Zhang Ya-hui: My father wanted you to marry into our family; it hurt your pride.
Cai Shi-nan: (laughs) Marrying into the family is indeed a condition I cannot accept.
Zhang Ya-hui: Hearing you say that makes me feel better, at least it’s not because…
△ Zhang Ya-hui hesitates, her cheeks turning slightly red.
Cai Shi-nan: I know what you want to say. Actually, half a year before meeting you for the blind date, I had just broken up with my junior schoolmate. I hadn’t adjusted emotionally yet. Although I felt we got along quite well that day, once I heard your father wanted me to marry into your family, I just…
Zhang Ya-hui: So that’s it—we were both guessing each other’s thoughts. If we hadn’t made things clear today, we probably couldn’t even remain friends in the future. Come, I toast to you, Shi-nan.
△ The two raise their glasses, lightly clink, and each drinks.
Scene | 14 Time | Day Location | Cai Family Living Room, Shi-nan Bedroom
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Zhang Ya-hui, Qiu Xiu-duan, Cai Shi-fen
△ Shi-nan is heavily intoxicated. Ya-hui drives Shi-nan’s car to bring him back. Ya-hui supports Shi-nan as he gets out of the car; the Cai mother and daughter hear the car and come out of the house.
Qiu Xiu-duan: A-nan, how did you end up so drunk?
Zhang Ya-hui: Auntie, Shi-nan helped the school fix computers, and afterward I kept him for lunch at my dorm. I didn’t know his alcohol tolerance was low.
Qiu Xiu-duan: Ya-hui, I’ve troubled you. A-fen, help your brother to his room to rest.
△ Ya-hui and Shi-fen support Shi-nan on both sides; the three enter the house.
△ Ya-hui and Shi-fen together carry Shi-nan into the room and lay him down.
Cai Shi-fen: My brother has very poor alcohol tolerance. Every time he drinks, he gets drunk. Luckily, he has good drinking manners—he doesn’t make noise or cause trouble when drunk.
Zhang Ya-hui: Let Shi-nan sleep it off. We’ll go outside to talk.
△ The two women leave the bedroom one after the other and go to the living room, standing and talking.
Zhang Ya-hui: Your brother said he broke up with his junior schoolmate half a year ago. It seems he was deeply hurt.
Cai Shi-fen: Yes. My brother’s ex-girlfriend’s father opposed their relationship. In order to separate them, he sent his daughter to the United States to study. My brother was mocked by her father, who said he was “a dog thinking of eating pork bones” (Taiwanese). He was deeply hurt mentally.
Zhang Ya-hui: No wonder on the day of the blind date, he was chatting happily with me at first, but once he heard my father wanted him to marry into the family, he immediately turned cold and stopped talking. At that time I instinctively felt the blind date would fail. It turned out I had touched his wound.
Cai Shi-fen: That day when my brother came back from the blind date, my mother asked him what he thought. He only said: “Why can wealthy people be so willful?” My mother then understood he was dissatisfied with your father’s conditions.
Zhang Ya-hui: Sigh! If it weren’t for this noon at my dorm when he and I cleared things up, I really wouldn’t have the courage to face your brother again.
Cai Shi-fen: Ya-hui sister, my brother is just a quiet person. If you don’t ask him, he can keep everything bottled up. But since he was willing to talk to you about his ex-girlfriend, he must already see you as a trustworthy friend. I think you might consider formally dating him. He may be passive and slow to warm up, but he actually values relationships a lot.
Zhang Ya-hui: Shi-fen, thank you for telling me this. I’ve always had a good impression of your brother. He rejected my father’s proposal because he didn’t want to marry into the family. I think he has backbone and is very stubborn in principle—I admire that kind of man.
Scene | 15 Time | Day Location | Donggang Harbor and Market
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Cai Shi-fen, You Su-ru, You Si-hai, Li Ming-de, gangsters Black Dog, Mad Bull, Thief Eye, tourists, vendors
△ At Donggang Harbor, tourists stroll through the market. Various stalls line both sides of the road.
△ Cai Shi-fen in a nurse uniform and You Su-ru in a government uniform skirt are strolling in the market, each holding grilled corn and grilled squid skewers while walking and eating.
△ Three punks in floral shirts approach and, seeing Shi-fen and Su-ru are attractive, surround them to strike up conversation.
Black Dog: Hey! Pretty girls, you’re really beautiful! My brothers want to be friends with you and take you to sing karaoke and eat good food.
Thief Eye: Yes, pretty girls, we want to take you to sing karaoke.
△ As he speaks, Thief Eye reaches out his “wolf claw” hand to touch Shi-fen’s shoulder. You Su-ru uses one hand to push it away, glaring at him while still chewing squid.
Thief Eye: Yo yo yo, why so distant?
△ Thief Eye reaches out again. At that moment, You Su-ru spits the squid fragments and saliva directly onto his face. Thief Eye instinctively wipes his face, but in a lightning-fast motion, Su-ru uses the bamboo skewer in her hand to stab his palms. Thief Eye screams in pain, both hands injured and crossed together.
△ This immediately enrages Black Dog and Mad Bull. Mad Bull grabs Su-ru’s ponytail with one hand and twists her right arm with the other, while Black Dog raises his right hand to slap her.
Black Dog: You crazy woman, you really need to be taught a lesson.
△ At that moment, Black Dog’s wrist is seized by a large hand, and Mad Bull’s fat face is hit by a solid punch, forcing him to step back while holding his face; blood from his nose runs through his fingers.
You Su-ru: Brother! Ming-de!
You Si-hai: Damn it! You dare bully my little sister—you’re tired of living!
△ Li Ming-de twists Black Dog’s right arm, and You Si-hai delivers a side kick to Black Dog’s abdomen. Black Dog screams and falls to his knees clutching his stomach.
Li Ming-de: You punks, who is your boss? How dare you let them harass girls in broad daylight!
△ Thief Eye lowers his head and does not respond.
Li Ming-de: Our boss is You Si-hai, son of You Da-cheng, the fisheries association secretary. Tell your boss to come out and explain. Whoever dares touch his sister will not be allowed to survive in Donggang!
△ The warning is very effective to the three punks. The surrounding crowd applauds enthusiastically. The three gangsters, knowing they are outmatched, flee in embarrassment.
△ You Si-hai walks toward Cai Shi-fen.
You Si-hai: (smiling) You are Cai Shi-fen, right? My little sister often mentions you.
△ Shi-fen is still shaken and looks at You Su-ru.
You Si-hai: (heroic) From now on, if anyone dares to bully you, tell me, I’ll beat them until they crawl like dogs.
Cai Shi-fen: Thank you, Si-hai ge.
△ At this moment, Cai Shi-nan, carrying a drawing board and art supplies, first sees Shi-fen, then recognizes You Si-hai beside her.
Cai Shi-nan: (OS) This You Si-hai caused Shi-fen to fall into such misery. I cannot let him get close to Shi-fen. I cannot let them be together!
△ Cai Shi-nan angrily walks over, pushes You Si-hai aside with one hand and pulls Shi-fen behind him with the other.
Cai Shi-nan: You Si-hai, I forbid you from targeting my sister!
Cai Shi-fen: (anxious) Brother, you’ve misunderstood!
△ You Si-hai is confused by the accusation, looking awkward.
Cai Shi-nan: (pointing) I’m not misunderstanding this thug. This thug will definitely ruin your life in the future.
Cai Shi-fen: Brother, what are you talking about? You Si-hai just…
Cai Shi-nan: You Si-hai, I formally warn you—listen carefully. I am not afraid of your underworld gang. If you dare harass my sister, I will fight you to the death.
△ You Si-hai is angered by the accusation and is about to explode, but is stopped by his sister Su-ru.
You Su-ru: He is Shi-fen’s brother. Maybe there’s some misunderstanding.
△ Li Ming-de steps in front of Si-hai, blocking their view.
Li Ming-de: Brother Cai, you really misunderstood. Those three punks were harassing your sister and Su-ru just now, and we beat them away.
△ Cai Shi-nan ignores the explanation, grabs Shi-fen’s arm, and leaves.
Cai Shi-nan: Shi-fen, come home with me. You are not allowed to meet this thug, You Si-hai, again.
△ You Si-hai, Su-ru, and Li Ming-de are left confused by Shi-nan’s intense reaction, looking at each other.
You Si-hai: (bitter smile) This Brother Cai is really strange. I didn’t do anything to Shi-fen—why is he so angry?
You Su-ru: Maybe he misunderstood you. I’ve seen him a few times before; he’s usually very gentle.
You Si-hai: Really? First time meeting me and he acts like he swallowed dynamite—yelling at me like I’m his enemy. Completely absurd!
Li Ming-de: Boss, he warned you not to harass his sister.
You Si-hai: That makes it even stranger. How does he know I fell in love with her at first sight?
Li Ming-de: Really, boss?
You Si-hai: Of course it’s true! Little sister, you must help your brother!
You Su-ru: (bitter smile) Brother, if you really like Shi-fen, I’ll of course help you. But first, you need to clear up the misunderstanding with her older brother.
You Si-hai: But I’ve never met him or provoked him. How would I know what misunderstanding he has?
You Su-ru: Alright, I’ll go ask Shi-fen about it.
Scene | 16 Time | Day Location | Cai Family Three-sided Courtyard, Shi-nan Bedroom
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Qiu Xiu-duan
△ Cai Shi-nan sits at the table, staring blankly at the distant sea. In his mind, a series of unpleasant past memories emerge one after another.
Insert:
△ Cai Shi-fen walks into the living room carrying a three-year-old child by the hand, a baby only a few months old strapped to her chest, and a suitcase in her hand, her expression dark and sorrowful.
Qiu Xiu-duan: A-fen, are you fighting with Ah-hai again?
Cai Shi-fen: (firm and sorrowful tone) I can’t take Si-hai anymore. I want a divorce!
△ Qiu Xiu-duan helps remove the baby from the sling and takes it into her arms.
Qiu Xiu-duan: Poor children!
△ Cai Shi-nan hears the conversation between mother and daughter and walks out from the room.
Cai Shi-nan: (raising his hand) Go ahead and divorce him! That kind of man is not worth you sacrificing your life for him.
Qiu Xiu-duan: No! You should persuade reconciliation, not separation. How can you, as an elder brother, say such things?
Cai Shi-nan: An outsider sees clearly. I’m speaking the truth. I advised you before not to be with that useless playboy Si-hai, but you treated my words like the wind in your ears. Now you regret it, don’t you?
Qiu Xiu-duan: A-nan, say less. Don’t add fuel to the fire. A-fen, what exactly is Si-hai doing now?
Cai Shi-fen: He goes gambling in casinos, owes several million in gambling debts, and has started thinking of smuggling drugs by fishing boats.
Cai Shi-nan: (horrified) Drug smuggling! If he gets caught, it’s a heavy sentence—he might even be executed.
Cai Shi-fen: I tried to persuade him but he wouldn’t listen. Even his father is so angry he doesn’t want to acknowledge him anymore.
Qiu Xiu-duan: How did things become like this? That Si-hai… he’s really a disaster…
▲ Back
△ Qiu Xiu-duan knocks on the door and enters, walking behind Shi-nan.
Qiu Xiu-duan: A-nan!
△ Shi-nan turns around.
Qiu Xiu-duan: What happened in Donggang this morning? A-fen said you lost your temper at that You Si-hai you met for the first time?
Cai Shi-nan: Mom, you must not let Shi-fen continue interacting with You Si-hai. That man will drag A-fen down in the future.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (confused) Drag A-fen down? They just met and haven’t even started dating. Isn’t your reaction a bit too extreme?
Cai Shi-nan: Just listen to me—there will be no mistake. As for who Shi-fen dates in the future, I don’t care, but she must never be with You Si-hai.
Qiu Xiu-duan: So you already have prejudice against him?
Cai Shi-nan: Mom, I am her brother. Would I harm her?
Qiu Xiu-duan: That’s true, but I still don’t understand. You say so confidently that Si-hai will drag A-fen down—what is your basis?
Cai Shi-nan: Mom, just trust what I say. You will understand gradually in the future. That Si-hai will go gambling, owe millions in debt, and then use fishing boats to smuggle drugs to repay it.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (half-believing) Really or not? I’ll go ask A-fen about it. Oh right, I almost forgot—A-nan, you’ve been back resting for a while now. Do you plan to find a new job?
Cai Shi-nan: Mom, I want to start my own business, but I haven’t decided what field yet.
Qiu Xiu-duan: Starting a business is good! Then you don’t have to look at an employer’s face. If you lack capital, Mom can help you raise funds.
Cai Shi-nan: No need. I already have the capital. Once I figure it out, I’ll start preparing.
Qiu Xiu-duan: (suspicious expression, OS) A-nan only worked in Hsinchu for half a year. Even if he saved some money, it shouldn’t be much. He sounds so confident… something feels strange…
Scene | 17 Time | Dusk Location | Cai Family, Shi-fen’s Room
Characters | Qiu Xiu-duan, Cai Shi-fen
△ In the room, Shi-fen sits at the dressing table, sulking. Qiu Xiu-duan enters carrying a tea tray.
Qiu Xiu-duan: A-fen, herbal tea to reduce heat and anger.
Cai Shi-fen: Mom, what did brother say when you asked him?
Qiu Xiu-duan: Your brother said Si-hai will drag you down in the future. He does not approve of you continuing to be with Si-hai.
Cai Shi-fen: When have I ever been together with You Si-hai? We only met for the first time in Donggang. Why is brother making such a fuss?
Qiu Xiu-duan: Your brother was very certain. He said Si-hai is addicted to gambling, will owe huge debts in the future, and then smuggle drugs to repay them.
Cai Shi-fen: What does whatever happens to You Si-hai have to do with me?
Qiu Xiu-duan: Your brother said you will eventually end up with Si-hai.
Cai Shi-fen: Really? Since when did brother become a fortune-teller? Don’t listen to his nonsense.
Qiu Xiu-duan: I also don’t know why your brother would say such things…
Cai Shi-fen: (OS) You Si-hai is addicted to gambling? I’d better ask Su-ru about this. Maybe it’s actually true…
Scene | 18 Time | Day Location | Donggang Fishing Harbor, Fishermen’s Association
Characters | Cai Shi-fen, You Su-ru
△ Outside the Donggang Fishermen’s Association, Cai Shi-fen stands facing the harbor. You Su-ru walks out and taps Shi-fen on the shoulder.
You Su-ru: Hi! Shi-fen, it’s working hours. How come you’re free to come here?
Cai Shi-fen: I came to Donggang Health Center for official duties. I have something I want to talk to you about, so I came after finishing my work.
You Su-ru: Shall we find a place to sit?
Cai Shi-fen: No need. I won’t take up much of your time. Let’s just talk here.
You Su-ru: Alright. What do you want to talk about?
Cai Shi-fen: Your brother Si-hai—does he gamble?
You Su-ru: (surprised) Who told you that, Shi-fen?
Cai Shi-fen: Who said it is not important. I just want to hear what you say.
You Su-ru: (difficult) Alright… Shi-fen, my brother does indeed buy lottery gambling tickets, but the amounts are always very small. He does it as repayment for a favor owed to a former underworld boss, Da-bao ge, who once helped him.
Cai Shi-fen: Oh? Doesn’t a gambler always get deeper the more they gamble? Haven’t you and your father ever tried to stop him?
You Su-ru: He only bets three or five hundred each time. The amounts are small, so my father didn’t pay much attention. Shi-fen, I’m curious—who told you this?
Cai Shi-fen: It was… my brother Shi-nan.
You Su-ru: (confused) Your brother? How could he possibly know my brother is buying lottery tickets?
Cai Shi-fen: I don’t know either. You probably remember last time in Donggang, my brother suddenly lost control and almost fought your brother.
You Su-ru: I remember. At the time I thought your brother was angry because my brother had been involved in gangs before and didn’t want us to approach you.
Cai Shi-fen: Actually, that wasn’t the only reason for his reaction.
You Su-ru: Tell me, Shi-fen. I want to know.
Cai Shi-fen: My mother told me that my brother firmly said Si-hai is addicted to gambling, will accumulate huge debts, and then smuggle drugs to repay them.
You Su-ru: (smiling) Your brother is quite the prophet. But my brother’s lottery betting shouldn’t be known by many people—how did your brother find out?
Cai Shi-fen: My brother refused to say. He only said he knows.
You Su-ru: Alright. I’ll tell my brother when I get back, so he knows his reputation has already spread—even your brother knows about it.
Scene | 19 Time | Day Location | Donggang Fishing Harbor, Pier Side
Characters | You Si-hai, You Su-ru, Li Ming-de, Crew Members
△ At the Donggang harbor, several fishing boats are docked, unloading their catch. You Su-ru walks to the side of the boat and waves. Si-hai and Li Ming-de walk toward her.
You Si-hai: Little sister, what is it?
You Su-ru: Brother, didn’t you ask me to find out why Shi-fen’s brother Shi-nan suddenly lost his temper at you?
You Si-hai: Yes. Her brother seems to have a deep prejudice against me.
You Su-ru: Brother, Shi-nan has already found out about your lottery gambling. He even predicted that you will end up in gambling debts and then smuggle drugs to repay them.
You Si-hai: Then I’ll just explain it to Da-bao ge clearly and stop dealing with him, so Shi-fen’s brother won’t misunderstand anymore.
Li Ming-de: Boss, why do you take that bookish guy’s words like holy orders?
You Su-ru: A-de, you’re really clueless! My brother likes Shi-fen!
Li Ming-de: Oh, even so, there’s no need to care about Cai Shi-nan’s attitude, right?
You Su-ru: You really are a stubborn cow that can’t be pulled back!
△ Li Ming-de scratches his head and laughs awkwardly after being scolded.
You Si-hai: Little sister, tell Shi-fen that for her, I am willing to change anything.
You Su-ru: (laughs) Oh? Brother, is this what they call “the power of love” (Note 1)?
Note 1: A popular Taiwanese song at the time.
Scene | 20 Time | Day Location | Xiaoliuqiu Seaside, Dormitory
Characters | Cai Shi-nan, Zhang Ya-hui, Anglers
△ Cai Shi-nan is fishing by the seaside. Zhang Ya-hui passes by on a scooter and accidentally spots him.
△ Zhang Ya-hui rushes back to the dormitory to retrieve fishing gear.
△ Zhang Ya-hui deliberately comes to Shi-nan’s side and casts her line. Shi-nan is slightly surprised to see her.
Cai Shi-nan: Ya-hui, lately I’ve been very troubled…
Zhang Ya-hui: Troubled about what? Let your good friend help you relieve it.
Cai Shi-nan: It’s about my sister Shi-fen—she’s gotten involved with that Donggang fisherman You Si-hai. I don’t want her to be dragged down by him in the future. Do you have any way to make that You guy voluntarily leave Shi-fen?
Zhang Ya-hui: Oh? Isn’t your sister Shi-fen working at the health center?
Cai Shi-nan: Yes. On weekends she just runs around everywhere like a wild horse.
Zhang Ya-hui: (smiling) That’s normal. Shi-fen should have her own social circle.
Cai Shi-nan: But I don’t want her to associate with You Si-hai.
Zhang Ya-hui: (thinking) Unless you create a family business to tie your sister down at home.
Cai Shi-nan: What kind of family business?
Zhang Ya-hui: For example… opening a homestay. In recent years many people in rural areas have started homestays to receive tourists.
Cai Shi-nan: A homestay… hmm, that’s not a bad idea. I had already thought of renovating our old courtyard house into a homestay.
Zhang Ya-hui: But renovation and decoration require a large amount of capital.
Cai Shi-nan: Capital is not a problem, but I probably can’t handle it alone.
Zhang Ya-hui: Then go with a Japanese style. There are relatively few Japanese-style homestays on our island.
Cai Shi-nan: Japanese-style homestay?
Zhang Ya-hui: Yes. In a few days I’ll bring you draft designs of the house and interior layout, and we can discuss it together.
Cai Shi-nan: Then I’ll trouble you, Ya-hui.
Zhang Ya-hui: I do charge design fees, you know.
Cai Shi-nan: (smiling) That’s only fair. After the homestay is completed, I’ll have Shi-fen quit her job and come back to manage it, so she won’t have time to run around on weekends anymore.
Zhang Ya-hui: (OS, gazing at Shi-nan) Does Shi-nan really have the capital? He seems very confident…
