1. THEME AND EXPLANATION
Theme:
This story depicts young men of the Tsou people—Gao Yingxiong, Pu Tianxiang, and Shi Ziqiang—and others, who in order to protect forest resources, do not hesitate to risk their lives to confront illegal loggers led by Wu Tianliang. Zhou Tianyou was originally the chief manager of Wu Tianliang’s illegal logging group. After almost mistakenly killing his younger biological brother, he repented and changed his ways, transforming from a logger into a forest patrol officer and becoming an undercover agent. Tianyou and his brother Tianxiang, together with Gao Yingxiong, Shi Ziqiang, and other Tsou youths, jointly dismantle Wu Tianliang’s illegal logging organization.
Explanation:
(1) This story is entirely filmed on location in Chiayi County and Chiayi City and Alishan. The author personally conducted field research in major Tsou tribal villages and scenic areas of Alishan to understand Tsou culture and lifestyle. The main characters are Tsou people, highlighting the survival conflict between the Tsou and some unscrupulous Han Chinese.
(2) Since the Morakot (88) typhoon disaster, the Alishan Forest Railway was severely damaged, and Danayigu suffered unprecedented destruction. Alishan’s tourism industry fell into severe decline. Although government reconstruction committees and local efforts have worked to rebuild infrastructure, it is difficult to restore its former prosperity in the short term. The author sincerely hopes that through adapting this story into a film, audiences can rediscover the beauty of Alishan and help revive its tourism industry. Therefore, before adapting the story into a screenplay, the author personally visited Alishan and held discussions with Township Mayor Chen Mingli and local elders, receiving their full commitment to support the future film production.
2. STORY SYNOPSIS
Wu Tianliang rose to wealth through smuggling cigarettes and alcohol and was elected as a Chiayi City councilor. His daughter Wu Lili works as a forestry lecturer at a university and is completely unaware of her father’s illegal activities. Lili applies for permission to conduct field research in the mountains and brings a group of students to Lulin Mountain. However, due to a typhoon, they become stranded in the mountains. With the rescue efforts of forest ranger Gao Yingxiong’s team and the assistance of Wu Tianliang’s chief manager Zhou Tianyou, the group of teachers and students is successfully rescued. Lili develops a favorable impression of Gao Yingxiong and requests him to act as a guide.
Concerned about increasingly strict customs inspections, Wu Tianliang follows Zhou Tianyou’s suggestion and turns to illegal logging. Yabu, who had stolen and sold gold ornaments and statues from the village shrine, is publicly judged by villagers and expelled from Tefuye village. In desperation, he encounters Zhou Tianyou and Jian Dafang, who were scouting the mountain. Tianyou and Jian learn that Yabu knows Lulin Mountain well and decide to recruit him. Yabu is then bribed by Wu Tianliang.
The logging group led by Tianyou and Yabu successfully steals two hundred-year-old Sevenleaf fragrance trees during their first illegal logging trip to Lulin Mountain. Encouraged by success, Wu Tianliang’s group plans a larger operation. Yabu suggests waiting until the fog season next year so that weather conditions can provide cover and reduce the risk of arrest.
Forest ranger Gao Yingxiong discovers illegal logging activity while patrolling. Wu Lili learns of this and suggests that Gao Yingxiong unite villagers to form a patrol team to stop illegal logging. Yingxiong agrees and calls a tribal meeting. Chief Gao Minghui sends invitations to Taban village chief Pu Guangrong, his son Pu Tianxiang (a forest police officer), and Tefuye chief Shi Weide and his son Pu Ziqiang, to meet at the Kuba (kuba) ceremonial house. They agree to form a joint 24-hour mountain patrol team. Gao Yingxiong and Shi Ziqiang each lead a patrol team composed of tribal youth.
Dafang and Yabu discover patrol activities in the mountains and report to Tianyou. Tianyou suggests that Wu Tianliang bribe the forestry bureau director and Alishan police station chief to use legality as a cover for illegal activities. Tianyou designs a honey-trap scheme and successfully obtains leverage over both officials, forcing their cooperation.
Yabu’s son Laiji draws a painting in art class depicting his father’s illegal logging activities, attracting the attention of teacher Shi Aiyu. Aiyu informs her boyfriend Pu Tianxiang. Tianxiang discovers that Yabu is the traitor who introduced the illegal loggers. He informs his father Pu Guangrong, who decides to wait and use Yabu as bait to catch the larger group. Aiyu also learns from Laiji that Yabu plans to lead loggers into the mountains during next year’s fog season.
Yingxiong and Lili travel to Danayigu. On the way, Lili is bitten by a venomous snake, but Yingxiong treats her properly and she is not seriously harmed. A sudden rainstorm forces them to take shelter in a hunter’s hut. That night, the two confess their feelings for each other.
Zhou Tianyou and Jian Dafang scout the mountain; Tianyou accidentally steps into a trap and is injured. They go to a clinic for treatment, where Tianyou discovers nurse Gao Huijun is Gao Yingxiong’s sister. He devises a plan, pretending to be from a modeling agency and promising to help Huijun become a model. Using his acting skills, he gains her trust.
Lili brings Yingxiong home to meet her parents. Wu Tianliang, upon learning Yingxiong is a Tsou indigenous person, immediately opposes their relationship. Tianyou and Dafang recognize Yingxiong as a patrol team member and inform Tianliang. Tianliang states that if Yingxiong joins him, he will not oppose the relationship. Yingxiong refuses and is forbidden from seeing Lili. Lili is confined at home under Tianyou’s supervision.
Tianyou lures Huijun into taking revealing glamour photos. In the atmosphere, Huijun loses herself and is seduced by Tianyou. Tianyou later approaches Yingxiong, first attempting to persuade him by promising Lili’s release. When that fails, he shows Huijun’s photos and gives Yingxiong three days to decide. After consultation with his father and tribe, Yingxiong agrees to negotiate. Pu Tianxiang secretly follows with a firearm, planning to retrieve the negatives.
Tianyou, Dafang, and Li Xiaodao negotiate with Yingxiong, but talks break down. Dafang attempts to shoot Yingxiong, but Tianxiang intervenes and helps Yingxiong escape while being captured himself.
Tianyou’s mother Zhou Tianmei discovers Tianxiang imprisoned in their woodshed and recognizes him as her long-lost younger son from a jade pendant. Tianyou arrives with Xiaodao; upon discovering Tianxiang is a police officer, Xiaodao decides to kill him. Tianmei reveals their relationship as brothers. Tianyou stops Xiaodao, but Tianxiang is still shot in the arm. Tianyou knocks Xiaodao unconscious and releases Tianxiang.
Tianxiang returns injured to the village. Yingxiong takes him to the clinic. After surgery, his life is not in danger, but his right hand is permanently disabled. With encouragement from Aiyu, Tianxiang gradually recovers.
Yingxiong learns Tianyou is his biological brother. Yingxiong and Huijun feel conflicted. Huijun decides to help Tianyou leave the criminal path and joins the patrol team as a medical officer.
Tianmei brings Tianyou to the hospital to see Tianxiang. Yingxiong becomes furious upon seeing Tianyou. Tianmei reveals Tianxiang’s identity and the history of their father, who was also a Tsou patrol officer killed during a major operation. The illegal loggers kidnapped young Tianxiang in revenge.
Laiji is bullied at school due to Yabu’s identity. He urges Yabu to stop illegal activities, but Yabu is conflicted.
Wu Tianliang learns Tianyou released Tianxiang and orders him confined. Tianyou is released by his subordinate Xiaoma. He brings Lili to Lulin Mountain station. Yingxiong and Tianyou reconcile. Tianyou agrees to assist the patrol team.
Zhao Jiaen, Tianxiang’s former university girlfriend, arrives in the mountains. A love triangle forms between Aiyu, Jiaen, and Tianxiang. Aiyu steps aside and transfers to a city school. Tianxiang realizes his true feelings for Aiyu and regrets deeply. Jiaen helps reunite them.
After marriage, Tianxiang, his pregnant wife Aiyu, and Jiaen visit Alishan Forest Park, where they encounter Xiaodao and Dafang. A conflict breaks out. Xiaodao accidentally shoots Jiaen. Aiyu sacrifices herself and is fatally wounded. She dies after asking Jiaen to care for Tianxiang and the child.
Tianxiang and Tianyou reconcile while overlooking Danayigu and decide to protect the forest together.
As the fog season approaches, Shi Ziqiang and Pu Tianxiang capture Dafang and hand him to police. However, police chief Mai Youlong releases him. Tianxiang is demoted. Later, evidence of corruption is collected and handed to inspector Chen Wendian, who sends officer Zhong Mingxian to secretly assist.
Under pressure from Wu Tianliang, Yingxiong is transferred. Tianyou is coerced through his mother. Eventually, patrol forces prepare a large-scale operation in Lulin Mountain.
During the final confrontation in fog season, patrol teams ambush logging convoys. A major standoff occurs. Tianyou persuades loggers to surrender, preventing bloodshed. Police intervention follows, and most criminals are arrested. Li Xiaodao escapes.
Xiaodao kidnaps Lili but is killed by Wu Tianliang, who later surrenders. The remaining criminals are arrested.
In the end, Yingxiong, Lili, Tianxiang, Jiaen, Tianyou, and Huijun all resolve their emotional conflicts. The three couples decide to hold a traditional group wedding during the Tsou “Life Bean Festival” in November.
3. Story Outline
Wu Tianliang rose to power through cigarette and liquor smuggling (sea cockroaches), and was elected as a Chiayi County councilor. He kept a group of armed henchmen under his control for self-protection. His daughter, Wu Lili, returned from studying abroad and was hired as a lecturer in a university’s forestry department. The innocent Lili was completely unaware that her father was engaged in illegal activities.
Lili applied to the Forestry Bureau for permission to investigate primitive forest resources and was approved. She then led a group of students to the Lulin Mountain area. Due to an approaching typhoon, the teachers and students were stranded in the Lulin Mountain region. Lili used her mobile phone to call her father for help. Tianliang immediately reported the situation to the Chiayi Branch of the Forestry Police and the Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau. Ranger Gao Yingxiong organized a rescue team to go to Lulin Mountain for rescue operations. Concerned about Lili’s safety, Tianliang ordered his chief steward, Zhou Tianyou, to accompany the mission. Lili stayed with her students in a hunting hut waiting for rescue. At this time, the hunting trail leading to the hut had collapsed. Yingxiong and Tianyou, disregarding their own safety, led the rescue team deep into the Lulin Mountain area and successfully located the trapped teachers and students, jointly rescuing them. Although Lili and Yingxiong had only just met, she had a very good impression of him and therefore requested that he serve as a guide.
Wu Tianliang repeatedly had his cigarette and liquor smuggling operations seized by the police and faced bankruptcy. Zhou Tianyou advised Tianliang that he had once seen valuable timber on Lulin Mountain, and that cutting down a few red cypress and Taiwan red cypress trees would resolve the financial crisis. Wu Tianliang considered it a good idea and instructed Zhou Tianyou to plan it.
Yabu stole gold ornaments and statues from a shrine and sold them. He was discovered by the tribe, arrested, subjected to vigilante punishment, and expelled from Tefuye Village. Zhou Tianyou asked Jian Daf to drive a small truck up the mountain under the pretense of selling miscellaneous goods while actually scouting the terrain. Daf got lost in the mountains and encountered Yabu. Daf treated the destitute Yabu to alcohol and meat. Yabu, slightly intoxicated, claimed he had once been a hunting expert of the Tsou tribe in Tefuye and was very familiar with Lulin Mountain. Jian Daf was delighted and brought Yabu back to meet Tianyou. After discussion, Tianyou and Yabu formed a timber theft team. Yabu was assigned as guide, and they went to Lulin Mountain for illegal logging. Their first attempt succeeded in stealing two century-old specimens of wutong (fragrant trees), giving them a taste of success. Tianyou then wanted to carry out a bigger operation, but Yabu suggested waiting until the fog season of the following year, when weather conditions would provide cover and reduce the risk of detection.
While patrolling, ranger Gao Yingxiong discovered illegal logging activity and reported it to his superiors at the Chiayi Forest Bureau, and informed Wu Lili. Lili believed that the strength of the rangers alone could not stop the “mountain rats” from continuing to steal timber, and suggested that Yingxiong must organize a full patrol team. Yingxiong decided to call a tribal meeting.
Chief Gao Minghui issued invitations to village head Pu Guangrong of Dabang Village, his son Pu Tianxiang (forest police officer), and Tefuye head Shi Weide, and his son Pu Ziqiang, to meet at the “Kuba” (kuba) of Tefuye Village. The meeting reached a consensus: the two tribes would jointly form a 24-hour patrol team to protect the virgin forest. Gao Yingxiong and Shi Ziqiang each led a patrol team composed of tribal youth.
Shi Ziqiang’s patrol team discovered Yabu and Daf’s illegal logging reconnaissance. The two reported back to Tianyou. Tianyou advised Wu Tianliang to first bribe the Forestry Bureau director and the Alishan police precinct chief in preparation for next year’s logging operations. Tianyou invited Police Chief Mai Yourong and Forestry Director Moluofo to a banquet involving entertainment and secretly photographed them as evidence. Later, Wu Tianliang used the evidence to blackmail Mai and Mo into meeting and agreeing to cooperate.
Shi Aiyu, an art teacher at Shanglin Junior High School, was teaching students to draw the forests of their hometown. Lai Ji, Yabu’s son, drew a scene of people illegally logging trees. Shi Aiyu asked about it out of curiosity. Lai Ji said it was his father and friends going to Lulin Mountain to steal timber. Pu Tianxiang picked up Aiyu after class, and Aiyu informed him of the incident. Tianxiang thus discovered that Yabu was the traitor collaborating with the “mountain rats.” He reported this to his father Pu Guangrong, who decided to play a long game to catch the bigger fish behind the illegal logging group. Shi Aiyu also learned from Lai Ji that Yabu and the mountain rats would return again during next year’s fog season to continue illegal logging.
Yingxiong took Wu Lili to Danayigu. Lili was accidentally bitten by a poisonous snake. Yingxiong promptly sucked out the venom and treated her with 八角蓮 (Bajiaolian). As night fell and rain intensified, both of them were soaked, so they decided to stay overnight in a hunting hut. Their feelings rapidly deepened.
Wu Lili’s mother, Wang Meixiu, tricked her into returning home under the pretense of illness for a blind date. Lili refused, saying she already had someone she liked. Meixiu demanded she bring her boyfriend home to meet her mother.
Zhou Tianyou and Jian Daf went up the mountain to investigate. Tianyou was injured after stepping into a trap. Daf took him to a clinic. Tianyou learned from nurse Gao Huijun that she was the daughter of the Tefuye tribal chief and the sister of Gao Yingxiong. Seeing an opportunity, Tianyou falsely claimed to be from a modeling agency and offered to help Huijun become a model. Huijun believed him and agreed.
Wu Lili brought Gao Yingxiong home to meet her parents. Wu Tianliang discovered that Yingxiong was an indigenous Tsou and immediately opposed their relationship. Tianyou and Daf recognized Yingxiong as a ranger and informed Tianliang. Tianliang demanded Yingxiong join him, otherwise he would oppose the relationship. Yingxiong refused. Tianliang forbade him from seeing Lili again. Lili protested and was placed under house arrest, guarded by Tianyou, preventing her return to the Lulin Mountain station.
Tianyou took Gao Huijun to shoot glamorous photo sessions. Huijun, overwhelmed by sweet words, ended up giving herself to Tianyou.
Tianyou attempted to recruit Yingxiong, promising to release Lili if he joined them. Yingxiong refused. Tianyou then used Huijun’s revealing photos to blackmail him and gave him three days to decide. Yingxiong consulted his father Gao Minghui. A tribal meeting was held, and it was decided Yingxiong would negotiate with Tianyou while Pu Tianxiang secretly carried a gun to protect him and attempt to seize the negatives.
Tianyou brought Li Xiaodao and Jian Daf to negotiate. The talks broke down. When Daf drew a gun to kill Yingxiong, Tianxiang intervened and shot Daf, allowing Yingxiong to escape, but Tianxiang was captured.
Tianxiang was imprisoned in Tianyou’s family woodshed. Tianyou’s mother, Li Tianmei, discovered him. She recognized from his jade pendant that he was her long-lost younger son. Tianyou arrived with Xiaodao. Xiaodao searched Tianxiang and found his police ID, intending to kill him. Tianmei revealed that Tianyou and Tianxiang were biological brothers. Tianyou hesitated, and Xiaodao only wounded Tianxiang’s arm. Tianyou knocked Xiaodao unconscious and released Tianxiang.
Tianxiang escaped and was treated at the clinic. His right hand was permanently disabled. With Aiyu’s support, he gradually recovered.
Yingxiong learned that Tianyou was his biological brother. Aiyu decided to help reform Tianyou and joined the patrol team as a medic.
News of Tianxiang’s injury spread through the tribe, strengthening unity. Tianmei brought Tianyou to the clinic to visit Tianxiang. Yingxiong confronted Tianyou’s crimes. Tianmei explained the past tragedy involving Tianyou’s father, a ranger killed in an ambush by illegal loggers.
Lai Ji was bullied at school because of his father Yabu. Aiyu stopped the bullying and urged Lai Ji to persuade his father to stop illegal logging.
Tianyou was detained by Tianliang but later released with the help of his subordinate Xiaoma. Lili asked Tianyou to take her to Yingxiong. The three went to the station. Yingxiong and Tianyou reconciled and decided to jointly fight the logging syndicate.
Tianxiang’s ex-girlfriend Zhao Jiaen returned. After emotional struggle, Aiyu chose to step aside. Jiaen later helped reunite Tianxiang and Aiyu. They married.
During a later trip to Alishan, Aiyu was accidentally shot by Xiaodao while protecting Jiaen and died from her injuries, leaving a posthumous child.
Tianxiang and Tianyou finally reconciled by Danayigu and vowed to protect the forest together.
During the fog season final confrontation, the patrol teams surrounded the logging convoy. Tianyou persuaded the group to surrender, preventing bloodshed. With police intervention led by Inspector Chen Wendian, the criminal network collapsed.
Li Xiaodao fled but later kidnapped Lili. Tianliang killed Xiaodao to save his daughter and decided to surrender to police.
In the end, Yingxiong, Lili, Tianxiang, Jiaen, Tianyou, and Huijun all found resolution. The couples decided to hold a collective Tsou traditional wedding during the November “Life Bean Festival,” celebrating unity and love alongside the protection of the mountains and forests.

Gao Yingxiong

Personality: Intelligent, steady, with strong sense of mission. An excellent hunter in the forest. Rugged appearance but gentle and sensitive inside. His singing voice is powerful and magnetic.

Pu Tianxiang

Personality: Biological brother of Zhou Tianyou. Kind-hearted, unafraid of evil forces. Uses intelligence in investigations and engages in strategic battles against illegal loggers.
Appearance: About 26 years old. Well-proportioned face, medium build. Wears police uniform.
Shi Aiyu
Female supporting character, Pu Tianxiang’s girlfriend.
Personality: Art teacher at Shanglin Junior High School. Naturally beautiful with strong artistic temperament. Shares interests with Tianxiang; together they form a talented couple.
Appearance: About 24 years old. Pure and sweet, long flowing hair. Wears a light beige long dress suit with light makeup.
Zhao Jiaen
Female supporting character, Pu Tianxiang’s former university girlfriend.
Personality: Wealthy young lady from a prominent family. Originally Tianxiang’s student sweetheart. Her father demanded Tianxiang become a son-in-law and inherit the family business, but Tianxiang refused, leading to their breakup. However, Jiaen remains persistent. After Aiyu dies saving her, Jiaen is entrusted to take care of Aiyu’s child and Tianxiang.

Gao Huijun
