The study authors hope to use their discovery to one day develop new cellular therapies. Processes in the human body transform harmless immune cells into ruthless killers According to a recent study, the human body has the capability to change normally harmless immune cell clusters into merciless killers that can attack tumor cells and other cells harboring viruses or parasites. Gamma delta T cells were formerly believed to be “pre-programmed” to identify and eliminate other rogue cells, but it now seems that certain types of the cells have a lot in common with well-known “adaptive” subsets of conventional T cells. Adaptive Behaviors in Gamma Delta T Cells In a recent publication in Cell Reports, an international team of scientists from the UK, Australia, China, the Netherlands, and the USA—led by the University of Birmingham—noted striking parallels to typical adaptive “killer” T cells. Senior co-author Professor Ben Willcox, from the University of Birmingham, commented: “Human gamma delta T cells have typically been assumed to be pre-programmed, however, our study shows that at least in blood, some types mirror the behavior of conventional T cells – suggesting they can be ‘trained’ to become extremely potent killers once they recognize aberrant target cells – including those infected with viruses, parasites, or possibly tumor cells. “Our discovery has implications for efforts to develop gamma delta T cells as novel cellular therapies. We hope that it will change the way scientists think about these cells and how they might contribute to the treatment of cancer and infectious disease.” Gene Expression and Adaptive Responses Funded substantially by a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award, the group examined the profile of gene expression in human gamma delta T cells – showing the cells in a much more ‘adaptive’ light. Gamma delta cells exist alongside alpha beta T cells and B cells in vertebrates. Researchers have discovered that select human gamma delta T cells appear to transform their pattern of gene expression to activate a ‘killer’ program – dependent on their exposure to abnormal target cells, with successful recognition of such targets likely a key factor triggering this transformation and subsequent attack. An extremely strong similarity to conventional adaptive killer T cells suggests that the unique contribution of gamma delta T cells is not the type of response they ultimately mount – such as killing a target cell – but that they are able to recognize abnormal target cells in a very different way. This suggests that they can mount unconventional adaptive responses in situations when conventional adaptive T cells cannot: Lead author Jack McMurray, from the University of Birmingham, commented: “There are a number of scenarios in which gamma delta T cells may be uniquely suited to respond, due to their unconventional recognition capabilities. Credit: David Paul/Museums Victoria DNA Mapping of Native Rodents Across Australia and New Guinea New research has mapped the DNA from more than 150 species of native rodents from across Australia, New Guinea, and Melanesian islands. It paints a clearer picture of how they’re related and how they ended up spreading across the Pacific. Lead author Dr. Emily Roycroft from The Australian National University (ANU) said native rodents are a fascinating but often under-appreciated evolutionary group. “There are over 150 species in Australia and New Guinea that aren’t found anywhere else in the world, like the rakali – or ‘water rat’ – that’s often seen swimming around Canberra’s lakes,” said Dr. Roycroft. “Until now, we’ve known very little about the evolution and origin of native rodents, especially species in New Guinea.” Unlocking the Secrets of Rodent Evolution with Ancient DNA The research team used a new approach to get DNA from museum specimens up to 180 years old, including many extinct and elusive species. A wild Rakali (also known as the Australian Water Rat). “One specimen of Guadalcanal rat from the Solomon Islands dates back to the 1880s, and the species hasn’t been seen since. It’s listed as critically endangered, and very possibly already extinct. We were curious to revisit these old specimens using modern technology,” said Dr. Roycroft. How Mountain Formation Shaped Rodent Distribution The research reveals that mountain formation in New Guinea five million years ago was the trigger for the spread of native rodents across the region. The expansion of New Guinea opened up new environments for rodents to adapt to, including through increased connectivity with Australia, the Solomon Islands, and the Maluku Islands. “We’ve known for some time that Australia’s native rodents originated in Asia and arrived in our region via water – possibly a single pregnant animal floating across on a piece of driftwood. Now we have an accurate timeline for this, and an explanation for why we see so many species today,” said Dr. Roycroft. “Our study shows native rodents are exceptional at colonizing new areas. When they first arrived in Australia they adapted to a lot of new environments – including the arid desert. The Ecological Importance of Native Rodents Having extra information about native rodents’ history could prove vital to the future of these species, according to Dr. Roycroft. “Native rodents have a deep intrinsic value in our ecosystems. They’re ecosystem engineers; they aerate soil via burrowing and foraging and they help to disperse seeds and fungal spores,” she said. “They also play a role in food webs as an important source for native predators, and in turn, they feed on plants, fungi, and smaller animals themselves. “But they also have the highest extinction rate of any Australian mammal group, due to extreme habitat loss and introduced predators. If we lose even one native species, it can throw off the balance in an ecosystem. “Understanding how our native rodents evolved and adapted will help us to conserve those we have left.” The study has been published in the journal Current Biology. The giant water bug, a large and potentially painful predator, has been spotted for the first time in Cyprus, sparking interest and investigation by scientists. This finding underscores Cyprus’s rich biodiversity and highlights the importance of citizen science in monitoring environmental changes and species migrations. Credit: Hadjiconstantis et al. Cyprus, known for its stunning, sun-kissed shores, stands as a Mediterranean biodiversity haven. Yet, it’s the island’s picturesque beaches, rather than its rich insect life, that usually capture attention. However, the keen eyes and curiosity of some beachgoers have provided important information about a species never recorded before on the island: the giant water bug, also known as a toe biter. Scientists Michael Hadjiconstantis from the Association for the Protection of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, Iakovos Tziortzis from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, and Kadir Bogaç Kunt from the Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute collected information and specimens from an increasing number of records of the giant water bug on the east coastline of the island in late spring and summer of 2020 and 2021. The species, known for inhabiting ponds and slowly moving freshwaters, had never been recorded on the island before, although established populations are known in adjacent Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Turkey, and Israel. The Giant Water Bug: A Formidable Predator Also referred to as the Electric light bug, this giant water bug is described as a vicious hunter, praying on invertebrates, fish, turtles, and even birds. What is even scarier is that, as the largest European true bug and the largest European water insect, measuring up to 12 cm, it has a reputation for inflicting very painful bites when handled carelessly. Its appearance, mainly on the eastern coastal front of the island, was initially recorded by swimmers, who were surprised by the fearsome looks and size of the bug. They either directly contacted the experts or published photos and videos online, mainly on Facebook groups related to biodiversity. The authors collected some of the specimens for further study. They also proceeded with an extensive online search on relevant online observation platforms (i.e. iNaturalist) in order to track any other reports of the species on the island. In addition, they sampled nearby wetlands, but did not spot the bug. End to end, a total of seven sightings were eventually recorded: five from social media and two after direct communication with the author team. Two specimens were obtained and examined morphologically to verify the species. The observations were recorded in a research article in the open-access journal Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa”. Having in mind that the toe biter is an iconic species accompanied by creepy stories concerning its encounters with humans, the authors assume that it is unlikely that it had gone unnoticed for too long. They consider it possible that several migration events might have been triggered in a short period of time by nearby countries hosting the species, such as Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. The specimens could have been transferred by wind or sea currents, as assumed by other researchers, or could have been driven by a decrease in food resources in their initial area of distribution. Despite the number of recordings in a short timeframe, no conclusions can be drawn for the moment on the establishment of a population of the species on the island. This is further to be investigated, and as the initial recording of the species, citizen science can have an important role in this.
