聯合國赤貧與人權特別報告員艾爾斯頓（Philip Alston）表示，超過八分之一美國人是窮人，其中將近一半「極貧窮」，而且大部分無法脫貧。
他說，美國可怕的貧窮和貧富差距的現象之一是再度出現寄生在十二指腸的鉤蟲，南方地方政府未提供乾淨的水和衛生設備，民眾必須自己花錢買。
他說，統計數字顯示14%美國人生活在貧窮線以下，但有更多人在貧窮邊緣，更實際的數字應是20%美國人是窮人。
艾爾斯頓指出，沃爾瑪百貨員工的全職薪水不能餬口，必須仰賴政府發的食物券。
他說，美國的社會流動率在富國中敬陪末座，意味「美國夢正快速成為美國幻影」。

大陸西南財經大學 教授甘犁 發布最新研究報告，顛覆了外界對大陸經濟現況的認知。調查發現，2012年6月份中國城鎮失業率是8.05%，是官方數據的2倍；而且貧富差距 或是世界各國中最大的。
大陸收入排名在前20%的人控制著68.4%的收入，但收入最低的後20%的人，僅控制著0.5%的收入；
中國經濟改革研究基金會 國民經濟研究所 副所長王小魯2010年所做的調研報告給出的結論是，中國收入最高的10%家庭與收入最低的10% 家庭的人均收入相差65倍。
