In the fourth year of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, Chunyu Yi, a medical doctor, was accused of crimes. According to the criminal laws, the charge against him must be judged at Changan, the capital. So, he was sent westward under escort in a prison cart. His five daughters followed the cart and wept. He raged at them, "I gave birth to no boys; now I get no help in need." Being deeply saddened by the words, Tiying, his youngest daughter, decided to accompany him to the capital. When she arrived, she submitted a petition to the emperor, "My father performed public service in Qi, where all people extol him as a righteous and just official. But now he is an alleged criminal and will be punished.  It hurts me so to see the death penalty makes no revival and corporal punishment makes no recovery. Even if those criminals want to repent and redeem themselves, there will be no way forward for them. I am willing to be a slavemaid in the court to atone for the crime of my father and to allow him to rectify himself." After reading the petition, Emperor Wen empathized with her and pardoned her father. In addition, he abolished corporal punishment in that year.
