Vocabulary

1. vulnerable adj. [ˋvʌlnərəb!]

Definitions: 1. a thing, person, or place that is vulnerable is easy to attack

                    2. easily damaged by something negative or harmful

Synonyms: sensitive, exposed, open, susceptible

Example: The government must help the most vulnerable groups in our society.

 

2. incline v./ n. [ɪnˋklaɪn]

Definition: to tend to behave in a particular way or have a particular attitude or opinion

Synonyms: tenddispose

Example: I incline to his view on the matter.

 

3. judgment n. [ˋdʒʌdʒmənt]

  Definitions: 1. an opinion that you have after thinking carefully about something

                      2. a decision that is made by a judge in a court of law

  Synonyms: decision, opinion, adjudication, decree

  Example: I acted on my own judgment.

 

4. veteran n. [ˋvɛtərən]

  Definitions: 1. someone who was in the military, especially during a war

                      2. someone who has a lot of experience doing a particular activity

  Synonyms: experienced, practiced, sophisticated, worldly-wise

  Example: He was a veteran of many battles.

 

5. privy adj./ n. [ˋprɪvɪ]

  Definitions: 1. knowing about something, usually official information, that other people do not know

                      2. a toilet in a separate small building next to a house

  Example: This is privy information so you can’t know it.

 

6. feign v. [fen] 

  Definition: formal to pretend to have a particular feeling

  Synonyms: pretend, fake, act, assume

  Example: He feigned death to escape capture.

 

7. levity n. [ˋlɛvətɪ]

  Definition: formal a way of speaking or behaving that shows you do not think something is very serious

  Example: I am sure foreigner must think our levity is baffling.

 

8. quiver v./ n. [ˋkwɪvɚ]

   Definitions: 1. to shake with short quick movements

                       2. a slight shaking movement or sound

   Synonyms: shake, shiver, tremble

   Example: The building quivered as the explosive went off .

 

9. epigram n. [ˋɛpə͵græm]

  Definition: a shot poem or sentence that expresses something in a

 clever or funny way

  Example: The audience was amused by his speech full of epigrams.

 

10. suppress v. [səˋprɛs]

  Definitions: 1. to stop opposition or protest using military force or strict laws

                      2. to stop a physical process from happening or                                       developing

  Synonyms: restrain, repress, inhibit, curb

  Example: These drugs should suppress your appetite.

 

11. snobbish adj. [ˋsnɑbɪʃ]

  Definition: behaving in a way that shows you think you are better than other people

  Example: She is a snobbish girl so everyone doesn’t like her.

 

12. parcel n./ v.  [ˋpɑrs!]

  Definitions: 1. a package

                      2. to divide something into smaller parts that are easier to sell

  Synonyms: package, bundle, pack

  Example: 1. This parcel came in the mail today. 

                  2. We bought two parcels of our neighbor’s farm.

 

13. tolerance n. [ˋtɑlərəns]

   Definition: the ability to experience something unpleasant or painful without being harmed

   Example: She had no tolerance for jokes of any kind.

 

14. riotous adj.  [ˋraɪətəs]

   Definitions: 1. very lively and noisy

                       2.behaving in a noisy and violent way

    Example: The crowd of protesters was becoming riotous.

 

15. exempt v. [ɪgˋzɛmpt]

   Definition: to allow someone to ignore something such as a rule, obligation, or payment.

   Synonyms: free, release, excuse, except

   Example: School property is exempt from all taxes.

 

16. gorgeous adj. [ˋgɔrdʒəs]

   Definition: very beautiful, very enjoyable

   Synonyms: splendid, beautiful, ravishing, stunning

   Example: Her bedroom is gorgeous.

 

17. intricate adj.  [ˋɪntrəkɪt]

   Definition: very complicated and difficult to understand or learn

   Synonyms: complicated, perplexing, entangled, complex

   Example: The intricate machine requires a skilled operator.

 

18. responsive adj. [rɪˋspɑnsɪv]

   Definitions: 1. showing interest or emotion in reaction to someone or something

                        2. be willing to reply to a question or to talk about something.

Example: She wasn’t very responsive when I asked her how the interview had gone.

 

19. flabby adj.  [ˋflæbɪ]

   Definition: flabby flesh is loose and fat

    Example: His muscle isn’t flabby.

 

20. temperament n. [ˋtɛmprəmənt]

   Definition: someone’s temperament is their basic character, for example their tendency to be happy, angry, etc.

   Example: He has a romantic temperament.

 

21. prominent adj.  [ˋprɑmənənt]

   Definitions: 1. important and well-known

                       2. easy to see or notice

   Synonyms: important, outstanding, distinguished, great

   Example: Amy had a prominent part in the play.  

 

22. finance n./ v. [faɪˋnæns] 

   Definitions: 1. decisions on how money is spent or invested

                       2. to pay for something such as a large project

   Synonyms: sponsor, support, aid

   Example: The countrys finances have improved.

 

23. conviction n. [kənˋvɪkʃən] 

   Definitions: 1. a strong belief or opinion about something

                      2. a decision by a court of law that someone is guilty of crime

   Synonyms: sentence, judgment, adjudication

   Example: His political convictions are very radical .

 

24. investment n. [ɪnˋvɛstmənt]

   Definitions: 1. the process of spending money in order to improve something or make it more successful

                       2. the amount of time, energy, or emotion needed in order to make something successful

   Example: Teacher’s investment of time in class preparation is always underestimated.

 

25. solemn adj. [ˋsɑləm]

   Definition: involving serious behavior or serious attitudes

   Synonyms: seriousgravegloomydismal

   Example: His face looked strangely solemn.
