  Definition: to improve something, or make it more attractive or more valuable

  Example: The program aims to enhance the employment of young people with disabilities or early signs of mental illness.

 

2. flame n. [flem]

  Definition: the brightly burning gas that you see coming from a fire

  Example: The factory was in flame.

 

3. terrace n. [ˋtɛrəs] 

  Definition: a flat area outside a house, restaurant, hotel, etc. used for sitting and eating meals

  Example: She wandered out onto the terrace.

 

4. thrill v. [θrɪl] 

  Definition: to make someone feel very excited and pleased

  Example: He was thrilled by her conversation.

 

5. whack v. [hwæk]

  Definition: to hit someone or something with a lot of force

  Example: The bully whacked my brother with a stick.

 

6. twirl v. [twɝl]

  Definition: to move in circles, or make something move in circles  Example: He twirled his umbrella as he walked.

 

7. digest v. [daɪˋdʒɛst] 

  Definitions: 1. when your stomach digests food, it changes it into the substances that your body needs

                        2. to understand information when there is a lot of it or it is difficult or unexpected

  Examples: 1. This rich food doesn’t digest easily.

                      2. I have digested most of the important points in the book.

  Definition: separate and different in a way that is clear

  Example: The twins had distinct tastes.

 

9. nutrition n. [njuˋtrɪʃən] 

  Definition: food considered as something that keeps you healthy

  Example: Because of his poor nutrition, he has grown weaker and weaker.

 

10. profound adj. [prəˋfaʊnd]

   Definition: showing serious thought and wise ideas

   Example: Her parents’ divorce had a profound effect on her life.

 

11. anthropology n. [͵ænθrəˋpɑlədʒɪ] 

   Definition: the study of human societies, customs,, and beliefs

   Example: I believe he has started reading up anthropology.

 

12. underpin v. [͵ʌndɚˋpɪn] 

   Definition: to be an important basic part of something, allowing it to succeed or continue to exist

   Example: These developments are underpinned by solid progress in heavy industry.

 

13. intestine n. [ɪnˋtɛstɪn] 

  Definition: the long tube in your body that processes food and carries waste out of your body

   Example: Vitamin K is not absorbed from the upper intestine.

 

14. valid adj. [ˋvælɪd]

   Definition: a valid document or ticket will be accepted by officials

   Example: The ticket is valid for one month.

 

15. contralto n. [kənˋtrælto]

   Definition: the lowest female singing voice, or a woman with this singing voice

   Example: She plays the contralto in the concert.

 

16. vacuous adj. [ˋvækjʊəs]

   Definition: completely lacking in intelligence or serious thought

   Example: I’m not happy, because it is vacuous in my heart.

   Definition: firm and difficult to bend

   Example: The shoes are brand new and the leather is still very stiff.

   Definition: noisy and causing trouble

   Example: A rowdy group of boys ran through the streets.

   Definition: something that causes you to react in an angry or violent way, often something that is intended to cause such a reaction

   Example: They didn’t react to this provocation.

   Definition: to make someone relaxed enough to sleep

   Example: During the night the wind lulled.

   Definition: a line of bushes or small trees growing close together around a garden or field

   Example: They planted a hedge around the garden.

   Definition: someone whose job is to drive a rich and important person around in their car, usually wearing a special uniform

   Example: She sent her car and chauffeur to collect her guests.

   Definition: someone who is wan looks very pale and weak because they are sick
