Vocabulary

1. engulf v. [ɪnˋgʌlf]

  Definition: to cover or surround something in a way that harms or destroys it

  Example: The house was engulfed in flames.

 

2. fee n. [fi] 

  Definition: an amount of money that you pay to be allowed to do something such as joining an organization

  Example: They charge a small registration fee.

 

3. flood n. [flʌd]

  Definition: a large amount of water that covers an area that was dry before

  Example: The flood made many people homeless.

 

4. foresight n. [ˋfor͵saɪt]

  Definition: the good judgment to think and plan before an event, so that you are prepared for whatever may happen

  Example: He is a man of foresight.

 

5. subscribe v. [səbˋskraɪb]

  Definition: to sign your name on an official document

  Example: He subscribed his name to a petition.

 

6. tourism n. [ˋtʊrɪzəm] 

  Definition: the business of providing services for people who are traveling for their vocation

  Example: Wh should work on improving our tourism industry.

 

7. dungeon n. [ˋdʌndʒən]

  Definition: a dark underground room in a castle that was used as a prison in the past

  Example: They were driven into a dark dungeon.

  Definition: to attract or interest someone very much

  Example: The children were captivated by her story.

 

9. circuit n. [ˋsɝkɪt]

  Definition: the complete path around which an electric current flows

  Example: A short circuit put the machine out of action.

   Definition: a country, army, etc. that uses force to enter another country

   Example: The invader laid towns and villages in ruins.

   Definition: to put something completely under water

   Example: Torrents of water rushed down the mountain and submerged the farmland.

   Definition: the beginning of the day, when it begins to get light

   Example: We must get up at dawn.

   Definition: a large wooden box used for moving or storing goods

   Example: Use an empty crate as a makeshift for a table.

   Definition: a boat that makes short regular trips between two or more places

   Example: They waited for the ferry to return.

 

15. impeccable adj. [ɪmˋpɛkəb!]

   Definition: perfect in every way

   Example: From this we can see her impeccable moral integrity.

 

16. lagoon n.

   Definition: an area of the ocean that is separated from the rest of the ocean by sand or rocks

   Example: An atoll is a circular reef surrounding a lagoon.

   Definition: someone whose job is to help people staying in a hotel by dealing with problems and giving them information

   Example: as expected, it was the concierge.

 

18. homogeneity n. [͵homədʒəˋniətɪ]

   Definition: the condition of all the things in a group being very similar or of the same type

   Example: It must take place at one time to ensure the homogeneity of the juice.

 

19. staid adj. [sted]

   Definition: serious and rather boring

   Example: We think of the Puritans as staid people.

 

20. nobility n. [noˋbɪlətɪ]

   Definition: people in the highest social class

   Example: The new rich aped the nobility.

 

21. inappropriate adj. [͵ɪnəˋproprɪɪt] 

   Definition: not appropriate in a particular situation

   Example: It is inappropriate simply to throw money at these problems.

 

22. unsteady adj. [ʌnˋstɛdɪ] 

   Definition: too weak or sick to walk well

   Example: The man walked along with an unsteady gait.

 

23. ascertain v. [͵æsɚˋten]

   Definition: to find out something

   Example: Can you ascertain who he is?

 

24. thorough adj. [ˋθɝo] 

   Definition: including everything that is possible or necessary

   Example: The doctor was very thorough in his examination of the sick child.

 

25. hilarity n. [hɪˋlærətɪ] 

   Definition: a situation in which people laugh a lot

   Example: Wine gives not light hilarity, but noisy merriment.
