最近有沒有時間愈過愈快,好像一下子就不見了的感覺呢?雖然說絕大部份應該是你的錯覺,但或許真有那麼一點點的成份,是因為地球自轉正在因為不明的原因加快。今年的 6 月 29 日比預期短了 1.59 毫秒(千分之 1.59 秒),是科學家自 1960 年代開始以原子鐘精確計時以來,最短的一天。
而且這還不是個單一的特例 —— 2020 年一整年就有 28 天刷新最短日的紀錄,而上一週的 7 月 26 日,也有一天比平均短了 1.5 毫秒。基本上地球自 2016 年以來就有在加速自轉的現象,而今年(2022)看起來平均日常也將短於 2021 和 2020 年的樣子。
科學家並不太確定日子在縮短的原因。以長期來看,地球的自轉應該是會因為月球引力產生的磨擦阻力(也就是潮汐)而逐漸放慢才是,由 14 億年前的一天 19 小時,逐漸放慢到現在的一天 24 小時。但在短期則可能會因為地震、冰帽的面積變化、月球的軌道、地球的地軸漂移等各種因素,而有小幅度的不確定性,甚至像現在這種逐漸變短的情況發生。
自 1972 年以來,為了讓原子鐘時間與地球的自轉對上,已經多次對世界協調時間(UTC)進行「閏秒」的調整,在 UTC 中插入一秒的空白。
