開幕曲是黑奴與白人們雙方悠揚和諧的重唱，流著汗水搬運棉花的工人們怨嘆地說他們在密西西比河岸做苦力，白人卻安逸的玩樂，這樣的生活直到審判之日才能終歇。

男主角Ravenal被流放在外無家可歸，邊走邊唱出自己不在意生活不順，感謝的是他的心依舊自由，但他還是期盼能有個伴侶，一個能讓他停靠歇息的港口……唱沒多久……就撞見了女主角Magnolia，很喜歡歌曲最後兩人的可愛招呼：

Julie的戀情還有生活都非常不順遂，在被愛人拋棄之後她在芝加哥的酒家駐唱唱出這首映射出心境的歌曲。自己曾對愛情抱持著幻想，認為自己會找到最完美的對象，實際上她卻愛上再普通不過的男人；旁人看來他幾乎沒有優點，不高不帥也不聰明，但在她的眼中他就是那麼完美、那麼自然，只因為……那就是他愛上的男人。

Magnolia在經歷生活困頓後，終於登上舞台實現當初想當演員的夢想。在群眾的噓聲下，這首歌開頭像是童話般的甜蜜：「小女孩爬上了老人膝上，乞求著要聽故事……」但歌詞卻充滿曲終人散的冷清：「舞會結束之後，黎明曙光之後，舞者們離開之後，所有星辰消失之後，如果你細心傾聽，留下的是許多的心痛；許多的希望跟著消逝，在舞會結束之後。」
最後雖然實現年輕時的明星夢，但Magnolia也經歷許多人生的浮沉，在唱出這首歌後，這齣在Show Boat真實上演的悲歡離合，也開始步上帶點哀傷幸福的美麗尾聲……
