劇本概要

  《馬克白》係莎翁四大悲劇之一，也是他所有劇作中最短的一部。一般都將此劇當作「對於恐懼之探討」來讀。

  馬克白和班柯這兩位蘇格蘭將軍打了一場勝仗，班師回朝途中經過一片枯黃的荒原時，出現三個神秘女巫跟他們攀談，她們預言般地依序高呼馬克白為「格拉密斯領主」、「考竇爾領主」、「未來的蘇格蘭王」，然後跟班柯說他的兒子們將登上王座。

  正當他們站在那裡納悶的時候，國王的信差來報：加封馬克白為「考竇爾領主」。

  女巫的第二個預言實現後，燃起了馬克白想當國王的野心；他的妻子極力慫恿他去殺掉鄧肯國王以實現女巫的「未來的蘇格蘭王」預言，並刻薄地責罵他行事猶豫。馬克白勉強順從妻意，謀殺了鄧肯，並篡位。

  由於擔心女巫預言的第二部份成真，馬克白買了兩名刺客去殺害班柯和他兒子弗里恩斯，但是弗里恩斯在混亂中跑走而逃過一劫。

  後來馬克白得知鄧肯王的兒子瑪爾柯姆正在英格蘭募集一支軍隊，並得蘇格蘭的麥克達夫爵士加入，要向他進攻，就把麥克達夫的妻兒們弄死。

  馬克白夫人因受不了良心的譴責而發瘋，終於自殺；是後麥克達夫偕同英格蘭軍隊打回蘇格蘭把馬克白殺死。最後，瑪爾柯姆被加冕為王。
