Story Outline
Yang Wenhua, a young Tsou tribesman from Alishan Township, had suffered from autism since childhood. During his student years, he had a childhood sweetheart and first love, Xie Ci’en. Ci’en, who was of mixed heritage, had fair skin and deeply defined features. Her father was Xie Lide, a Canadian pastor.
During their second year of high school, Ci’en suddenly collapsed in class. After being sent to the hospital for examination, she was diagnosed with acute leukemia. During her treatment, Wenhua stayed by Ci’en’s side. Ci’en’s leukemia changed Wenhua’s original plan of applying to the Department of Information Engineering; instead, he decided to set his sights on medical school.
After graduating from senior year, Xie Lide decided to take Ci’en back to Canada for treatment. Before Ci’en left Taiwan, she and Wenhua made a ten-year promise. She said that if her leukemia was cured, then in ten years, during the Tsou tribe’s “Life Bean Festival” in Alishan, she would return to Taiwan and stay together with Wenhua for the rest of their lives.
Lin Xiuling was born in Shanghai and belonged to the first group of Chinese students studying in Taiwan. Her father was a Taiwanese businessman who had achieved great success in business in Shanghai. Possessing both beauty and charm, Xiuling was recognized by everyone in the department as the “department beauty.” She had countless admirers, but Xiuling, who was independent and highly career-oriented, always practiced “equidistant diplomacy” toward her admirers, trying her best not to offend anyone.
During her seventh-year clinical internship, Xiuling chose the field of cosmetic medicine. After obtaining her specialist physician qualification in Taiwan, she planned to return to Shanghai and open her own clinic.
Yang Wenhua, whose personality was dull and introverted, focused entirely on his studies during medical school. His academic performance was outstanding, but he was poor at expressing himself and interacting with classmates. His social relationships were extremely simple, and his classmates jokingly nicknamed him “Father” (priest).
Lin Xiuling encountered Yang Wenhua twice by chance in the library. Yang Wenhua lent Xiuling his reference books, and Xiuling’s first impression of Wenhua was that he was a strange but exceptionally studious eccentric.
It was not until after graduation, when Lin Xiuling and Yang Wenhua were assigned to the same group in a medical service team in Alishan Township, that the two came into closer contact. Wenhua was the senior mentor of the group, and by then he was already a surgical resident at the Taitung branch of Guanghua Teaching Hospital.
The two developed a closer relationship during the service trip. Xiuling was moved by Wenhua’s dedication to surgical technique and by his passion for helping the disadvantaged people in remote rural areas. On the Danaiku Suspension Bridge, she took the initiative to confess her love to Wenhua, but Wenhua gently rejected her because he had made a ten-year promise with his first love, Xie Ci’en. When Xiuling learned that Ci’en suffered from a terminal illness, although she was disappointed, she did not lose hope in Wenhua.
Wenhua, likewise, was left with a favorable impression of Xiuling’s kindness, gentleness, diligence, and eagerness to learn.
While serving as a surgical resident at Guanghua Hospital in Taitung, Yang Wenhua faced enormous work pressure. He fully applied everything he had learned, and with his sincere and steadfast work ethic, he earned the recognition and esteem of Shao Qingyang, the director of the Department of Surgery.
At this time, Lin Xiuling had already returned to Shanghai and opened a cosmetic medicine clinic. With her striking appearance, naturally she had no shortage of admirers. Among them, Zhao Xiaodong stood out the most. He was handsome, tall, elegant, and a staff surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Fudan Hospital in Shanghai. Xiuling, who prioritized her career, had not yet given Xiaodong any promise regarding his pursuit, but she nevertheless admired his professional abilities as a physician.
Because of his outstanding performance, Yang Wenhua was assigned by the main hospital to go to Shanghai to participate in an international medical conference hosted by Fudan Hospital. Lin Xiuling arranged for Yang Wenhua to stay at her villa and took care of his daily needs.
However, Zhao Xiaodong clearly felt neglected by Lin Xiuling. He became dissatisfied with Wenhua and regarded him as a rival in love.
At the conference, Yang Wenhua presented a surgical paper entitled “The Application of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Cosmetic Medicine.” Zhao Xiaodong deliberately tried to find fault with him and openly accused Yang Wenhua. This aroused the dissatisfaction of intern physician Guo Xinmei, the daughter of Hospital Director Guo Hansheng, who immediately stopped him on the spot.
To maintain order at the conference, Chairman Guo Hansheng demanded that both Xinmei and Xiaodong leave the venue.
Guo Xinmei greatly admired Yang Wenhua’s knowledge and demeanor and developed favorable feelings toward him. Guo Hansheng, the director of Fudan Hospital, wished to recruit Yang Wenhua to serve as director of the Cosmetic Medicine Department, and personally invited him. Wenhua tactfully explained his original intention of remaining in remote areas to serve the local people.
Although Guo Hansheng felt regret, he had a premonition that Yang Wenhua was a young talent who would surely become a shining star in the fields of surgery and cosmetic medicine in the Chinese-speaking medical world.
After the conference, Guo Hansheng did two things.
First, he had a serious talk with his daughter Guo Xinmei. Under the pretext of medical exchange with Guanghua Hospital, he arranged for Xinmei to follow Yang Wenhua to Taiwan to learn minimally invasive surgery, hoping that she could develop feelings for Wenhua and win him over as his future son-in-law and successor to Fudan Hospital. Guo Xinmei gladly agreed to cooperate with her father’s plan.
Second, he called Zhao Xiaodong in and scolded him. After learning that Zhao Xiaodong had behaved rashly at the conference because he was pursuing Lin Xiuling and saw Yang Wenhua as a romantic rival, Guo Hansheng instead became understanding and encouraged Zhao Xiaodong to continue pursuing Lin Xiuling. He thought to himself that in this way, his daughter Xinmei would have one less formidable rival.
Soon afterward, a female patient named Hu Meimei requested that Lin Xiuling perform breast augmentation surgery on her. However, after looking at the patient’s X-rays, Xiuling suspected that the patient had breast cancer. Therefore, she tried very hard to persuade Hu Meimei that she first needed to go to a major hospital for examination, and only after the breast cancer tumor had been removed would Xiuling agree to perform reconstructive surgery for her.
Hu Meimei believed that Xiuling was deliberately making things difficult for her and threatened to go to another cosmetic clinic.
While the two were arguing, Yang Wenhua came to say goodbye to Xiuling. After understanding the entire matter from both sides, he helped Xiuling persuade Hu Meimei to accept the full course of treatment. He also promised to postpone his return to Taiwan and use his professional skill in minimally invasive surgery to teach Xiuling, helping her out of the predicament.
Hu Meimei went to the Department of Surgery at Fudan Hospital for examination and told the doctor on duty that Lin Xiuling had invited her senior schoolmate Yang Wenhua to perform the surgery on her. The doctor on duty believed that Yang Wenhua did not have a local medical license and therefore could not operate on patients there. The doctor therefore consulted attending physician Zhao Xiaodong.
Zhao Xiaodong instinctively realized that he had an opportunity. After learning the time of the surgery, he reported Yang Wenhua to Cao Ming, director of the Shanghai Medical Inspection Bureau, accusing him of practicing medicine illegally.
Thrilled by the opportunity, Cao Ming led his team and stormed directly into the operating room while Lin Xiuling was performing surgery on Hu Meimei. However, they did not catch Yang Wenhua there. The entire group was sternly reprimanded by Lin Xiuling, and after making fools of themselves, they left in frustration.
After finishing the operation, Xiuling returned to her office and told Wenhua about the incident. She also said she intended to confront Zhao Xiaodong, because he was the only person with a motive to make such a malicious report.
At the restaurant, Lin Xiuling hosted a farewell dinner for Wenhua. Wanting to thank him, Xiuling took out an additional sum of money that Hu Meimei had given her and offered it to Wenhua as a gift. Wenhua suggested that she donate the money to charity instead. He also revealed that he had long been donating part of his salary and sending it back to Hualien and Taitung to support medical care in remote areas.
Wenhua’s kindness and charitable actions deeply moved Lin Xiuling and made her love for him even stronger.
Afterward, Zhao Xiaodong came to Xiuling’s clinic carrying flowers. Xiuling directly questioned him. At first, Xiaodong pretended to be ignorant, thinking that Xiuling was blaming him for attacking Wenhua during the medical conference. But Xiuling bluntly exposed the fact that he had secretly reported Yang Wenhua to the Medical Inspection Bureau.
Humiliated and enraged, Xiaodong lost his temper on the spot and was thrown out by Lin Xiuling.
Guo Xinmei came alone to the Taitung branch of Guanghua Hospital and followed the serious and taciturn Yang Wenhua in her studies. Wenhua carefully arranged clinical operations and personally instructed Guo Xinmei. Xinmei instinctively felt that minimally invasive surgery would surely become the mainstream treatment method in cosmetic medicine in the future.
During a physicians’ meeting in the Department of Surgery, attending physician Chen Binghuang took the opportunity to propose separating plastic surgery from general surgery. Not understanding the real reason behind the proposal, Guo Xinmei believed that this was the trend of modern medicine and therefore supported it.
Director Shao Qingyang responded that the hospital administration had not approved the proposal due to cost considerations, and that even if plastic surgery were separated from general surgery, Yang Wenhua’s actual workload would not be reduced.
After the meeting, Su Junsheng explained the true reason to Guo Xinmei. Only then did she suddenly understand. Director Shao knew that Chen Binghuang, who was lazy by nature, would be unable to shoulder the responsibility. Before retiring, Director Shao planned to have Yang Wenhua take over as director and lead the surgical team. Guo Xinmei had almost been used by Director Chen.
On the eve of Yang Wenhua’s birthday, Su Junsheng and Guo Xinmei arranged to celebrate for him. Both of them prepared gifts and bought cake and champagne. But things did not go as planned.
On the night of the celebration, Yang Wenhua received notice from the emergency department that a severely injured traffic accident victim urgently needed surgery. Xinmei climbed onto Wenhua’s motorcycle, and the two hurried to the emergency room first.
The injured person was gradually losing consciousness. The doctor on duty judged that the patient might have severe internal bleeding. If Wenhua was not confident, the patient could be transferred to a nearby Christian hospital.
After examining the patient, Wenhua believed that the victim’s internal organs had ruptured and were bleeding, and that if surgery were not performed immediately, the patient’s life could not be saved.
Thus, the patient was pushed by the nurses into the operating room. Wenhua, Xinmei, and later Junsheng, who arrived shortly afterward, worked together to complete this operation that was literally a race against time.
By the time they left the hospital, it was already late at night. The three gathered again in the lounge and finally completed Wenhua’s birthday celebration.
Afterward, Wenhua sat in the courtyard enjoying the cool air and looking at the stars. Xinmei came over and chatted with him. Xinmei believed that with Wenhua’s superb surgical skills, he should go to a large city like Shanghai and establish a specialized cosmetic medicine hospital.
Wenhua said that fame and wealth had never been the reason he studied medicine. What he wanted was to be in the place where he was needed most, to provide better medical care for the people there, and to save the lives of the poor. Compared with taking large amounts of money from the pockets of the rich, this gave him a greater sense of achievement and belonging.
In a tentative tone, Guo Xinmei expressed her affection for Yang Wenhua, but Wenhua gently rejected her, saying that he had already made a promise to his first love.
Knowing that it was impossible to persuade Wenhua to go to Shanghai, Guo Xinmei felt regret for him, but also admired his selfless spirit and willingness to live a simple life.
When the six-month medical exchange ended, Yang Wenhua and Su Junsheng held a farewell for Guo Xinmei. Xinmei asked Wenhua for a hug and took the opportunity to whisper in his ear that she would be waiting for him in Shanghai.
Zhao Xiaodong repeatedly came to Lin Xiuling’s clinic to “stand guard with flowers,” disrupting Xiuling’s work. In addition, the Tsou tribe’s “Life Bean Festival” in Alishan was approaching in November, making Xiuling begin to think about closing her clinic.
After a long internal struggle between hope and fear, Lin Xiuling decided to gamble with fate. If Yang Wenhua’s first love did not appear then, perhaps Wenhua would accept her.
Thus, Lin Xiuling dragged her suitcase and left Shanghai for Alishan. She appeared at the “Life Bean Festival” ceremony site and was unexpectedly discovered by Yang Wenying. Wenying went forward and recognized Xiuling.
At this moment, Yang Wenhua had resigned from his job at Guanghua Hospital in Taitung and rushed back to the festival site to wait for Xie Ci’en.
However, what arrived was not Ci’en, but Ci’en’s mother, carrying an urn for him.
The ending of the ten-year promise turned out to be this.
Wenhua fell to his knees and burst into tears, unable to accept the truth for a time.
When Lin Xiuling saw this, she hurried over to comfort Wenhua and silently accompanied the stunned and grief-stricken Wenhua back to the Yang family home.
Yang Wenhua’s mother, Su Yuzhen, and his younger sister, Yang Wenqing, saw Wenhua holding Xie Ci’en’s urn, with Lin Xiuling and Wenying standing behind him. For a moment, they could not understand what had happened. After Wenying explained everything, everyone decided to wait until Wenhua had calmed down.
Lin Xiuling’s deep affection and unwavering devotion gradually pulled Yang Wenhua out from the shadow of Xie Ci’en.
Wenhua came to realize that Lin Xiuling’s willingness to give up her career in Shanghai and return with him to devote herself to medical care in remote areas was what truly made her his life partner.
With the Yang family as witnesses, this loving couple was about to be married.
