Week 8 (4/13-4/17)
1. look back /lʊk/ /bæk/
- to think about something that happened in the past
E.g.: When I look back I can see where we went wrong.
2. psyche /ˈsaɪ.ki/
- the mind, or the deepest thoughts, feelings or beliefs of a person or group
E.g.: Peru is a very traditional country, and embedded in its psyche is a love of ceremony.
3. simplicity /sɪmˈplɪs.ɪ.ti/
- when something is easy to understand or do
E.g.: The advantage of the plan is its simplicity.
4. skin /skɪn/
- the natural outer layer which covers a person, animal, fruit, etc.
E.g.: Native Americans used to trade skins (= the skins of animals that have been removed from the body, with or without the hair).
5. solemnly /ˈsɒl.əm/
- serious and without any humour
E.g.: Everyone looked very solemn.
6. soul /səʊl/
- the spiritual part of a person which some people believe continues to exist in some form after their body has died, or the part of a person which is not physical and experiences deep feelings and emotions
E.g.: She suffered greatly while she was alive, so let us hope her soul is now at peace.
7. turn (ten) /tɜːn/
- to (cause to) move in a circle round a fixed point or line
E.g.: The Earth turns on its axis once every 24 hours.
8. wizard /ˈwɪz.əd/
- a man who is believed to have magical powers and who uses them to harm or help other people
9. measles /ˈmiː.zl̩z/
- an infectious disease which produces small red spots all over the body
10. mumps /mʌmps/
- an infectious disease that causes painful swelling in the neck and slight fever
11. anticipate /ænˈtɪs.ɪ.peɪt/
- to imagine or expect that something will happen, sometimes taking action in preparation for it happening
E.g.: We don't anticipate any trouble.
12. breakthrough /ˈbreɪk.θruː/
- an important discovery or event that helps to improve a situation or provide an answer to a problem
13. flexibility /ˈflek.sɪ.bl̩/
- able to change or be changed easily according to the situation
E.g.: My schedule is quite flexible - I could arrange to meet with you any day next week.
14. in sum /sʌm/
- the whole number or amount when two or more numbers or amounts have been added together
E.g.: The sum of thirteen and eight is twenty-one.
15. likelihood /ˈlaɪ.kli.hʊd/
- the chance that something will happen
E.g.: This latest dispute greatly increases the likelihood of a strike.
16. one thing leads to another
- If one thing leads to another, there is a series of events in which each event was caused by the previous one.
E.g.: At first, we were just dancing together, but one thing led to another, and I ended up in bed with him.
17. pursue /pəˈsjuː/
- to follow someone or something, usually to try to catch or kill them
E.g.: The car was pursued by helicopters.
18. spare /sper/
- If something is spare, it is available to use because it is extra
E.g.: Have you got a spare pen?
19. strenuous /ˈstren.ju.əs/
- needing or using a lot of physical or mental effort or energy
E.g.: He rarely does anything more strenuous than changing the channels on the television.
20. take up /ˈteɪk.ʌp/
- how much people start to use or accept a service, or sometimes a product, that has become available to them
E.g.: We are calling for government action to improve the take-up of state benefits.
21. volunteer /ˌvɒl.ənˈtɪər/
- a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it
E.g.: The Health clinic is relying on volunteers to run the office and answer the telephones.
22. centenarian /ˌsen.təˈneə.ri.ən/
- someone who is a hundred years old or more

- a substance which slows down the rate at which something decays because of oxidization (= combining with oxygen)
