Week 5 (3/23-3/27)
1. helpless /ˈhel.pləs/
- unable to do anything to help yourself or anyone else
E.g.: You feel so helpless because there's nothing you can do to make the child better.
2. impulsive /ɪmˈpʌl.sɪv/
- showing behavior in which you do things suddenly without any planning and without considering the effects they may have
E.g.: Don't be so impulsive - think before you act.
3. manipulate /məˈnɪp.jʊ.leɪt/
- to control something or someone to your advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly
E.g.: Throughout her career she has very successfully manipulated the media.
4. manners /ˈmæn.ər/
- polite ways of treating other people and behaving in public
E.g.: It's considered good manners in some societies to leave a little food on your plate.
5. proceed /prəʊˈsiːd/
- to continue as planned
E.g.: His lawyers have decided not to proceed with the case.
6. reinforce /ˌriː.ɪnˈfɔːs/
- to make something stronger
E.g.: The pockets on my jeans are reinforced with double stitching.
7. scream at the top of lungs
8. slam /slæm/
- to (cause to) move against a hard surface with force and usually a loud noise
E.g.: The wind made the door/window slam (shut).
9. wail /weɪl/
- to make a long, high cry, usually because of pain or sadness
E.g.: The women gathered around the coffin and began to wail, as was the custom in the region.
10. writhe /raɪð/
- to make large twisting movements with the body
E.g.: The pain was so unbearable that he was writhing in agony.
11. pediatrician /ˌpiː.di.əˈtrɪʃ.ən/
12. toddler /ˈtɒd.lər/
- a young child, especially one who is learning or has recently learned to walk
13. chatter /ˈtʃæt.ər/
- to talk for a long time about things that are not important
E.g.: She spent the morning chattering away to her friends.
14. shin /ʃɪn/
- the front part of your leg between your knee and your foot
E.g.: She's got a nasty bruise on her shin.
15. hurl /hɜːl/
- to throw something with a lot of force, usually in an angry or violent way
E.g.: In a fit of temper he hurled the book across the room.
16. octave /ˈɒk.tɪv/
- the space between two musical notes which are eight musical notes apart
E.g.: Her remarkable vocal range spanned three and a half octaves.
17. tub /tʌb/
- a large round container with a flat base and an open top
E.g.: Outside was a stone patio with tubs of flowering plants.
18. doorman /ˈdɔː.mən/
- a person whose job is to stand by the door of a hotel or public building and allow people to go in or out, and to open their car doors, etc.
19. ahem /əˈhəm/
- used to describe the little cough that someone gives to express slight embarrassment, enjoyment, doubt or disapproval, or to attract attention

- food
21. pantomime /ˈpæn.tə.maɪm/
- a funny musical play based on traditional children's stories, performed especially at Christmas
E.g.: It's an evening of music, drama and pantomime.

24. diameter /daɪˈæm.ɪ.tər/
- a straight line that reaches from one point on the edge of a round shape or object, through its centre, to a point on the opposite edge
E.g.: The diameter measures twice the radius.
25. ecosystem /ˈiː.kəʊˌsɪs.təm/
- all the living things in an area and the way they affect each other and the environment
E.g.: Pollution can have disastrous effects on the delicately balanced ecosystem.
