Week 7 (4/6-4/10)
1. emerge /ɪˈmɜːdʒ/
- to appear by coming out of something or out from behind something
E.g.: She emerged from the sea, blue with cold.
2. frontier /frʌnˈtɪər/
- a border between two countries, or (especially in the past in the United States) a border between land used to grow crops where people live and wild land
E.g.: Some of the frontier between Germany and Poland follows the course of the river Oder.
3. giant /ˈdʒaɪ.ənt/
- an imaginary creature like a man but extremely tall, strong and usually very cruel, appearing especially in children's stories; someone who is taller or larger than usual
4. limb /lɪm/
- an arm or leg of a person or animal, or a large branch of a tree
E.g.: The accident victims mostly had injuries to their lower limbs (= legs).
5. manage to /ˈmæn.ɪdʒ/
- to succeed in doing something, especially something difficult
E.g.: Did you manage to get any bread?

- to move into or through something

- a piece of rock or other matter from space that produces a bright light as it travels through the Earth's atmosphere

- a thin flat piece of cut wood or other hard material used for a particular purpose
E.g.: Cut the vegetables on a UK chopping/ US cutting board.
11. naturalist /ˈnætʃ.ər.əl.ɪst/
- a person who studies and knows a lot about plants and animals
12. muddy /ˈmʌd.i/
- covered by or containing mud (= wet, sticky earth)
E.g.: Don't bring those muddy boots inside!

- mainly US for tartan
14. consolation /ˌkɒn.səˈleɪ.ʃən/
- something that makes someone who is sad or disappointed feel better; when you try to make someone who is sad or disappointed feel better by giving them comfort or sympathy

- a surface which lies at an angle to the horizontal so that some points on it are higher than others
E.g.: The roof is at a slope (= at an angle to a horizontal surface) of 30°.

- a thick piece of tree trunk or branch, especially one cut for burning on a fire

- (especially of animals) not able to walk correctly because of physical injury to or weakness in the legs or feet

- a large insect found in warm countries, which produces a high continuous sound
