Credit: Don McLeish First Known Filmed Footage of the Behavior in the Elusive Marine Animal Do sea turtles canoodle? They do, according to a study published by a marine biologist from Arizona State University. Until now, sea turtles have been seen as unsocial animals, other than courtship and mating. But Jesse Senko came across an unusual collection of video footage filmed by an independent naturalist off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, which shows turtles nuzzling and swatting at each other like cats. “Nobody else has found any,” Senko said. Citizen Science Contributions to Marine Biology When Senko, an assistant research professor in the College of Global Futures at ASU, analyzed the footage, he found 149 instances of social behaviors across four hawksbill turtles — three adult females and one juvenile. “That really changes the paradigm,” he said. “They were not viewed as social animals. … We don’t observe them that much in the wild.” Video by Don McLeish, an independent naturalist located in Maui, Hawaii. Head touching was the most common behavior observed, while biting was the least common. “(The head touching) sometimes lasted several minutes and involved turtles rubbing the sides of their faces together, swiping their beaks in a gyrating motion, or pumping water in and out of their mouths and noses,” Senko said. “The latter behavior pushes water past their chemosensory organs, which may allow the turtles to smell and thus recognize each other.” Why this behavior has never been observed before is simple: Sea turtles usually avoid people. But turtles have been protected in Hawaii for so long they no longer fear humans. The water is also crystal clear, making observation easy. The Role of Citizen Scientists in Discovery It wasn’t a scientist who filmed the behavior. All the footage from the study was shot by independent naturalist Don McLeish while snorkeling in Maui. Credit: Photo by ASU “This study highlights how engaged citizens can make extraordinary observations that would otherwise remain undetected, even by the scientists who study these animals like myself,” Senko said. Alexander Gaos, a marine ecologist and global expert on hawksbill turtles at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, become aware of the videos and contacted Senko to see if he had a student who could sift through them. ASU undergraduate student Corinne Johnson analyzed the video footage. “I have never felt more inspired than I have while working on this project,” Johnson said. “Going through all the videos was time-consuming, yet it was so exciting to be a part of this groundbreaking project on sea turtles, especially as an undergraduate student living in Arizona.” The overall frequency of social behaviors in sea turtles remains unclear. These animals were filmed opportunistically, but how long do they interact? “How often do they engage in this behavior? And what are the behavior differences between species?” Senko said. “We still don’t know that missing piece.” He asked his fishing partners in Baja California Sur, Mexico, if they have ever observed hawksbill turtles interacting closely like this. They said they had. Senko added that almost every time he has captured a hawksbill turtle in a net, there are multiple turtles. “I think they hang out together,” Senko said. “This study shows that we are just beginning to understand these animals, and that they are likely more complex than we previously realized or assumed. … This has important conservation implications for all sea turtles, but especially hawksbills, which are critically endangered and hunted for their shells in several locations worldwide.” Reference: “Interactions Among Hawaiian Hawksbills Suggest Prevalence of Social Behaviors in Marine Turtles” by Alexander R. Credit: Vicky Spencer Researchers revealed that auxin-driven branching mechanisms existed in the earliest land plants, reshaping evolutionary timelines and offering insights for improving modern crop yields. Scientists at the University of Bristol have made a groundbreaking discovery that challenges previously held beliefs about the origin of branching in plants. Through a comprehensive examination of the underlying processes that drive branching, the research team has uncovered what the earliest land plants were likely to have looked like millions of years ago. Their findings have revealed a shared mechanism for branching in vascular plants, despite the fundamental differences in their growth patterns. Dr. Jill Harrison from Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences explained: “Diverse shapes abound in the dominant flowering plant group, and gardeners will be familiar with ‘pinching out’ plants’ shoot tips to stimulate side branch growth, leading to a bushier overall form. However, unlike flowering plants, other vascular plants branch by splitting the shoot apex into two during growth, a process known as ‘dichotomy’.” As an ancient vascular plant lineage that formed coal seams during the Carboniferous era, lycophytes preserve the ancestral pattern of dichotomous branching. Auxin Transport: A Key Mechanism in Branching Using surgical experiments in a lycophyte, researchers at the University of Bristol have discovered that dichotomy is regulated by short-range auxin transport and co-ordinated in different parts of the plant by long-range auxin transport. Credit: Jill Harrison Published in Development, the findings that both flowering plant and lycophyte branching are regulated by auxin transport imply that similar mechanisms were present in the earliest vascular plants around 420 million years ago. By combining these findings with discoveries made in the non-vascular, non-branching moss group we can infer what the first land plants looked like around 480 million years ago. Previously, Dr. Harrison’s lab disrupted auxin transport in a moss, leading it to branch in a similar manner to the earliest branching fossils. Together these studies imply that the earliest land plants were branched, and that branching was lost during the evolution of non-vascular mosses. Dr. Jill Harrison explained: “The greening of the land by plants paved the way for all terrestrial life to evolve as it provided food for animals and oxygen to breathe, and branching was a key innovation in the radiation of land plants. Our work implies that branching evolved earlier than thought, which is an important evolutionary conclusion. Aside from that, the fact that we have shown that plants that are so distantly related use the same genetic mechanisms to regulate branching brings great potential to transfer knowledge in engineering plant shape to improve future productivity and yield.” Reference: “Diverse branching forms regulated by a core auxin transport mechanism in plants” by Victoria M. Credit: Brandon Ryan Hannan In the coastal waters of the Okinawa Islands, researchers have discovered two species of cephalopods, named in honor of traditional Japanese folklore. The underwater landscapes near Okinawa, a Japanese sub-tropical island chain, are among Earth’s most diverse ecosystems. Boasting over 360 types of coral, these vibrant and delicate marine gardens support a myriad of animal species. Now, researchers from Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), as well as other universities in Japan and Australia, have made headway in cataloging this abundance of life by describing two new species of pygmy squid – the Ryukyuan Pygmy Squid (scientific name Idiosepius kijimuna, Ryukyu-himeika1 in Japanese) and Hannan’s Pygmy Squid (Kodama jujutsu, Tsuno-himeika). Feisty forest fey The scientific names of the two new species take inspiration from Japanese folklore, owing to their appearance and behavior. The Ryukyuan Pygmy Squid, Idiosepius kijimuna, is named after the short, red-haired forest fairies that are said to live in the banyan trees of Okinawa. Like their namesake, the squids are tiny, feature red coloration, and spend most of their time in their forest habitat, attached to vegetation in shallow seagrass beds close to the coast. The Kodama genus is named after the round-headed spirits that supposedly live in ancient trees, whose presence indicate a healthy forest. The perhaps unusual species name of jujutsu alludes to the preying behavior of the squid, which resembles the Japanese martial art: “Jiu-jitsu revolves around grappling and using your opponent’s strength, and the Kodama jujutsu preys on shrimp larger than itself by grappling with its small arms”, says Jeffrey Jolly from the Marine Climate Change Unit at OIST, who co-authored the paper detailing the discovery of the two species in the Journal Marine Biology. The squid has also been observed with its arms raised and curled above its head, reminiscent of a martial arts pose. Needles in a haystack Finding the squids was no easy feat. Both species live up to their names, as they truly are minuscule – the largest specimen examined measured just 12 millimeters in length, shorter than a sewing needle. Adding to this, both species are only active at night, and the Ryukyuan only appears in winter. Even then, this species has been caught and (incorrectly) identified many times before, being found in the relatively accessible, shallow seagrass beds. This is in contrast to the more elusive Hannan’s, which is only found in coral reefs, where, as Jeffrey Jolly puts it, “there are so many other things to look at, that finding a small squid the size of a pinky fingernail is not easy”, even for experienced ocean photographers. Jeffrey Jolly initially began his work on cataloging the species in the Molecular Genetics Unit at OIST, and the project spanned researchers from both units, as well as from Australian universities. It is especially the work of underwater photographers and naturalists Shawn Miller, Keishu Asada, and Brandon Ryan Hannan, who Kodama jujutsu takes its common name after, that made the research possible, as their photos kickstarted the initial interest in cataloging the species. Ecologies under threat Like their mythical namesakes, these pygmy squids are intimately connected with their natural environments in the emerald waters of Okinawa. These habitats are, unfortunately, under threat from human activity, especially due to climate change heating up the ocean waters, which may cause coral bleaching. Overfishing, land reclamation, and soil runoff also threaten the underwater homes of the critters, no matter how large or minuscule they may be.
