曾經，《傲慢與偏見》是我最鍾情的英國經典名著.......直到殭屍的出現。 試想伊麗莎白和他的姊妹們穿著美麗的衣裳，文雅地舉起……匕首，砍下一個個殭屍腦袋，接著含蓄地笑著，在濺滿鮮血與腦漿的宴會廳裡翩翩起舞談笑風生。這種錯亂的景象簡直比《追殺比爾》的屠戮場面還難以接受。 是的。《傲慢與偏見與殭屍》就是這麼一本錯亂的小說。以一種稱之為「文學混搭」的手法，將珍‧奧斯汀的文學名著《傲慢與偏見》加入類似《惡靈古堡》的元素。因保留原文的部分超過一半，奧斯汀與葛雷恩-史密斯並列為共同作者。不知奧斯汀地下有知，會不會對此有異議，甚或像葛雷恩寫的殭屍那樣，從墳墓裡爬起好好地享用一頓葛雷恩腦子大餐。 經過改寫，許多東西都變了味。原著一開場的雋語 “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” 被改成「這是個人盡皆知的真理：享受過許多腦子的殭屍，必定會想要更多的腦。」於是原本接下來班奈特夫婦的對話應該會產生的反諷趣味就消失了。取而代之的是一種荒誕的感覺。時時刻刻面臨被殭屍啃食腦子的危險，當時的女性關心的竟是女兒的婚姻。而且怪病蔓延，當地人不思如何解決，倒是如常出門散步、開舞會，置自己於危險之中。種種乖繆的情節讓人百思不得其解。 其中，最讓我無法接受的則是伊麗莎白的轉變。原著中慧姞的女子在此竟成了有雙重人格的殘酷殺手。因為達西先生對她的無禮評論，她竟然打算「尾隨這個驕傲地達西先生到外面去，然後劃開他的咽喉。」(p.12)更過分的是，和凱薩琳夫人的忍者對戰僅是娛樂性質，她竟然「貫穿了他的胸腔，然後抽回手──掌中是那位忍者還在跳動的心臟。…咬了一口，讓血從她的下巴滑落…」(p.81-2)我實在看不出這般殘忍的行徑有任何的必要。 另外，原本18世紀的婉約含蓄語言加入21世紀的不設限幽默造就了如下的句子：「伊麗莎白‧班奈特小姐！龍柏村的守護者？賀福德郡的女英雄？我真是大吃一驚呀。你保證會有個魅力四射的岳母，而且當然啦，以你們兩個聯手的高超武功，可以降伏一大堆晦氣東西 。」(p.17)這一句出自愛慕達西先生的賓利小姐之口。還算是文雅的。而且改寫的也算有趣。從這裡倒是可以看出葛雷恩的改寫功力。 總之，《傲慢與偏見與殭屍》這本書絕對能引起相當的好奇和討論。至少葛雷恩膽敢改寫名著的勇氣和混搭的技巧還蠻令人佩服的。說不定他會像哈洛品特一樣，剛開始被批評的體無完膚，最後卻得了諾貝爾文學獎呢。只是我個人還是偏好古典版的《傲慢與偏見》。 再次感謝小異出版提供試讀機會。(雖然我的心得一定不是你們希望見到的那種。)
