Many a Chinese netizen addresses Chairman Mao with a neutral, vocational appellation "教員" (a faculty member or an instructor) online, without mentioning his surname. But why not call him a more popular, intimate "老師" (teacher) using his surname?

I think that is because Mao graduated from a normal school and his first job before the revolution was as a teacher. He also deemed himself an instructor, teaching Chinese people to found a new China with his own methods.
FYI, the title "老師" is also widely used online to address some people with outstanding performance in various fields. For example, Chinese fans like to call Nikola Jokic, an NBA superstar, "約老師", and even a Japanese AV actress, Sora Aoi, " 蒼老師".
