hello friends
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther, and my name is Garrett.
Today we have a wonderful travel lesson for you.
The name of our lesson is "Traveling to Florence." All right!
We’re talking about Florence, friends.
This is a city—where is it? In the country of Italy, yes!
This is in Europe, and if you have ever been here,
you will know that this city is very
famous because there is a lot of art here, right?
There are beautiful paintings,
statues, and buildings.
Millions of people travel to this city every year,
and we get to talk about it with you, friends!
We also get to look for our Find It answer.
Our question is: What did Terra climb?
So remember Terra, our world traveler.
She travels around the world, and every month,
she tells us about where she has been
or where she plans to go.
Let’s say it one more time: What did Terra climb? Yes!
We will find out where Terra went
and what she got to climb in our lesson today—
along with learning
about lots of other great things in Florence.
I know this is a city I have always wanted to visit, right?
I’ve never been to Florence myself either,
but you often hear about it,
and you can see the beautiful buildings in Florence
in many paintings and pictures, right?
I think a trip to Italy would be great,
because there’s a lot to
see in Florence.
But it’s not the only interesting city in the country.
There are so many interesting ones—from Rome to Naples
to many others.
Well, we’re going to learn more about Florence,
but first let’s go to Sonia to learn today’s key words.
Terra
I saw so many wonderful paintings there.
Greg
Did you go and see the Statue of David?
Carol
It is a beautiful church.
There is a clock inside above the entrance.
Welcome, Terra! What adventures do you have to share with us today?
A lot, Greg! I just got back from Florence, Italy.
That is an amazing, beautiful city.
You can say that again!
The art there is fantastic. Did you visit the Uffizi Gallery?
It’s one of the finest
and oldest art museums in the world.
I did! I saw so many wonderful paintings there.
My favorite was Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo. Yay!
It is always so much fun when Terra comes on Greg’s program, right?
And Greg starts by asking her,
“What adventures do you have to share with us today?”
And that’s because Terra often shares—or talks about—
where she has been around the world.
She has great adventures.
Adventures are like trips you go on full of excitement,
and sometimes even danger!
Well, hopefully Terra’s wasn’t too dangerous,
but she does have a lot to share. Yes!
Terra has many things to share.
And remember: the words "a lot" are two words, not one word.
Terra tells us that she just got back from Florence, Italy.
All right—Florence, Italy!
This is a city
much further north in Italy than some others.
And Greg knows it is an amazing,
beautiful city, right?
And the way I remember
where Italy is on the map is that it looks like a boot—
shoes that people wear on their feet.
Long shoes in the wintertime, right?
So open up a map and see if you can look at that—
it does kind of look like a boot, friends!
Well, Terra completely agrees with what Greg says,
so she says, “You can say that again,” right?
And “You can say that again” is also
today’s calendar phrase.
You can say that again.
You can say that again.
You can say that again.
The art here is fantastic.
You can say that again.
Okay, the art here is fantastic.
You can say that again.
Okay, the art here is fantastic.
You can say that again.
Okay, the art here is fine, but please don’t. You’ve said it enough.
Oh, okay.
You can say that again.
You can say that again.
(You can say that again. 「
(You can say that again. 「
B: You can say that again.
“You can say that again”—when you use this phrase,
“You can say that again”—when you use this phrase,
it often doesn’t mean you want someone to repeat themselves.
It just means you really agree with what they said, right?
And now let’s go to Sonia for more on this phrase.
You can say that again."
"I couldn’t agree more."(我完全同意)
再一句 "That’s for sure."(那是肯定的)
Thank you, Sonia.
Tara tells us that the art there in Florence,
Italy is fantastic. If something is fantastic,
it means it’s amazing, or excellent, or even wonderful.
Well, Greg does know a few things.
He wants to know if Terra visited the Uffizi Gallery.
A gallery is a place
you can go to see art that’s on display—a lot like a museum, right?
And Greg knows that the Uffizi Gallery is one of the most famous.
He says it’s one of the finest and oldest
art museums in the world, right?
An art museum is a place where you can see art.
People aren’t making art there;
they’re showing art that was made before—
sometimes a long time ago,
like art from Michelangelo.
But sometimes you might hear this guy’s name
said a different way, right?
Many people pronounce it as "Michael Angelo" as well.
But Garrett, I think
your name sounds more like what it should sound—
it’s a little more like the Italian pronunciation.
Well, Terra did go to the Uffizi Gallery and saw
many wonderful paintings.
But her favorite was Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo, right?
The Doni Tondo is very special
because it’s a round painting.
And if you paint something, it means that you are using
special oils or liquids to draw.
So it is a painting. Yeah.
When you paint something, the picture
you make is called a painting.
At a gallery,
there are often many paintings.
Well friends, think about this as we go and take a quick break.
Don’t go away.
Every day, that’s the way!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Do you enjoy looking at old art?
If you do, what kind do you like looking at?
You know, this Doni Tondo
was painted a long time ago.
People believe it was painted in the early 1500s.
Wow! That’s hundreds of years ago!
And still today,
you can go and look at it if you visit Florence.
Friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
Did you go and see the Statue of David?
I did! It was so beautiful.
The museum was really crowded, though.
Of course—everyone wants to see that famous statue.
I also visited the Duomo.
It is a beautiful church.
There is a clock
inside, above the entrance.
It was made in 1443,
and it still works.
That is so interesting.
Did you climb the dome?
I did! I got a wonderful view of Florence from the top.
Ah, I’ve heard of this piece of art.
Greg wants to know if Terra went to see the Statue of David, right?
A statue is something made of wood or rock
that you need to carve.
So the Statue of David is one of the most
famous statues in the world.
David was a man called David. He lived a long time ago,
and in the statue,
he is not wearing any clothes.
That’s right.
But it is a famous piece of art
that you can find in Florence.
If you want to know more about David,
you can find it in the Bible.
Right, and Terra did see the Statue of David.
She says that it was so beautiful,
and the museum, though, was very crowded.
This means there were many people at the museum.
I imagine famous museums have people all over the place.
I remember going to a famous museum in Paris, France.
There, it was hard to see any of the paintings
because there were so many people.
Right, everyone wanted to see
those wonderful and amazing paintings.
And Greg agrees. He says, “Of course—
everyone wants to see that famous statue,”
right? The Statue of David.
Well, Terra also visited some other places.
She visited the Duomo.
I think this might be the most famous place in Florence, right?
If you look at a picture of Florence,
you will usually see a picture of the Duomo.
It is a beautiful old church.
Right—the roof, or the top of it, is kind of round.
We hear there is a clock inside,
above the entrance.
Right—the entrance is where you enter.
Now, a church is a place where people who believe in God
go and worship.
There are many churches around the world—
especially in Europe—
and many of these are very old.
They’re often open to the public.
So if you’re a tourist visiting there,
you can walk inside and look at the beautiful art
or the beautiful building.
Just make sure you’re quiet and be respectful.
And what’s amazing about this clock
was that it was made in 1443,
and it still works!
The clock is still running. Wow!
It can still tell you the time.
You’ll just need to find it by the entrance—
that’s the place where you go into the building.
Many buildings have entrances.
Right now, let’s go learn more about this sentence:
“It was made in 1443, and it still works.”
Sonia, can you help us?
Terra
It was made in 1443 and it still works.
My phone was stolen.(我的手機被偷了。)
或是:All the shoes were sold.(所有的鞋子都賣光了。)
Thank you, Sonia.
Greg finds this interesting, and then he asks Terra:
Did you climb the dome?
The dome looks like the top part of a ball, right?
A dome is that rounded part on the top of the building—
here, on the top of the Duomo.
The Duomo has a dome.
And friends, we have an answer to our Find It question:
What did Terra climb?
She climbed the dome of the Duomo. Yes!
There are some stairs that you can take
to climb to reach the top, right?
That must be exhausting, but I’m sure the view is great.
Now friends, let’s review our keywords.
Here’s our first keyword: wonderful
Wonderful – I had a wonderful time in Texas.
painting
Painting – I looked at the paintings in the museum.
statue – Do you see the statue of a man?
church
Church – Many people went into the church.
entrance
Entrance – Many people went in the entrance.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep practicing!
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are: wonderful, paintings, statues, church, and entrance.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
This _____ is beautiful inside.
It’s a building.
You got it! This church is beautiful inside.
Next: The food here is _____.
You need an adjective here.
The food here is wonderful.
Next: Where is the _____ to the library?
This is where you enter.
Where is the entrance to the library?
Next: We looked at the _____ in the garden.
They were made of stone.
That’s correct! We looked at the statues in the garden.
Last one: Several _____ are on the wall.
Good job! Several paintings are on the wall.
Did you get all the answers right?
That’s great! Don’t forget to come back for Your Turn.
Welcome, Kara! What adventures do you have to share with us today?
A lot, Greg! I just got back from Florence, Italy.
That is an amazing, beautiful city.
You can say that again!
The art there is fantastic. Did you visit the Uffizi Gallery?
It’s one of the finest and oldest art museums in the world.
I did! I saw so many wonderful paintings there.
My favorite was Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo.
Did you go and see the Statue of David?
I did.
It was so beautiful. The museum was really crowded, though.
Of course—everyone wants to see that famous statue!
I also visited the Duomo.
It is a beautiful church.
There is a clock inside, above the entrance.
It was made in 1443, and it still works.
That is so interesting!
Did you climb the dome?
I did! I got a wonderful view of Florence from the top.
One, two, let’s review—oh, hello!
Is your name Florence?
No, that’s not my name.
But your suitcase says “Florence.”
That’s because I just got back from Florence.
Oh! Florence, Italy?
Yes!
It was wonderful. Florence is an amazing and beautiful city.
It sure is. It has one of the finest
and oldest art museums in the whole world.
There are so many wonderful paintings there.
That’s right. I saw a painting by Ma... Mica...
Ma... Mica... Mica Angelo?
Oh yeah!
And a famous statue, too.
Ah, the Statue of David?
Yeah! It was very nice.
But the museum was so crowded.
Of course! Everyone wants to see the statue. It’s very famous.
And I visited a beautiful church.
It has a big clock inside—
That’s hundreds of years old.
Does it still work?
Oh yeah!
Oh, and the church has a big dome, and I climbed to the top.
Oh! How was the view?
It was wonderful!
Ah, sounds like a great trip. Thanks for sharing, Florence!
My name is not Florence.
Sorry, I forgot. Huh...
Hey Grandpa, do you know where Florence is?
No... who’s Florence?
Is she lost?
Grandpa, Florence is a city in Italy.
Oh! That Florence! Yeah, it’s a very famous place.
It sure is.
Tara went there. She saw wonderful artwork.
Great! So what was Terra’s favorite painting?
Her favorite painting was—
Oh hey! I was going to ask you that!
Well, I asked you first!
Do you know the answer?
Yes, I do.
Her favorite painting was Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo.
Thanks for that answer!
It’s not easy to say.
No, it isn’t.
So Grandpa, do you enjoy going to art museums?
Oh yes, I enjoy art museums. Why?
Because art is so interesting.
Some artwork is beautiful.
Some artwork is colorful.
Some artwork is crazy!
Art museums are fun—there’s so much to see.
I agree!
I enjoy art museums too.
Hey! We should visit an art museum together.
Yeah!
Hmm... maybe we should.
But which one?
The famous one in Italy?
Grandpa, that’s too far away!
Too bad...
Well friends,
Today we talked about a famous building in Florence—
the Duomo.
But I think we should talk about the parts of any building.
For starters, all buildings have an entrance, right?
The entrance is where you go in.
Here, you will find the door.
Once you open the door,
you will go in the building.
All right. Now, buildings also have an exit.
That’s where you leave the building.
Often, the entrance and the exit are the same,
but sometimes there are exits you can only go out of—
but not come in, right?
And buildings have walls.
When you’re inside a building,
you will see walls around you.
Finally, there’s a roof on the top of the building.
Friends, we’ll be back with more on Florence
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther. Today our topic is travel, and our title is Traveling to Florence.
Yes, friends, we are traveling to this magical city together in the north of Italy, right?
And yesterday we talked about some of the places you can go when you visit Florence, right?
Like that amazing church—the Duomo—with a rounded dome on top that you can climb up from the inside.
And that’s what Terra did. When you climb up to the top, you can get a nice view of Florence.
Exactly! There are a lot of other things to do there.
You can also go to the Uffizi Gallery and see the amazing works of art there, like paintings from Michelangelo, right?
And you will see other Italian artists and their work there as well.
Now today, Suzy and James will be talking about Florence as well.
And let’s go to our Find It question.
Here’s our question, friends:
What could Suzy and James do after they cross the bridge?
What could Suzy and James do after they cross the bridge?
Friends, pay attention to this question and try to find the answer in today’s lesson.
Right, after they cross the bridge...
Oh, I wonder where our co-workers are today.
Are they near a bridge around our town?
What will be on the other side?
Listen carefully, and now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our keywords.
There’s the famous bridge.
It is centuries old.
Mostly gold and silver jewelry.
We could see some of the buildings of Florence.
And get some pizza.
Would you like to visit Italy, James?
I would. It’s a wonderful country.
If you went, where would you go first?
I’d go to Florence.
Me too!
Wow, we are in Florence.
And there’s the famous bridge—the Ponte Vecchio.
What a cool bridge!
It must be really old.
It is. It is centuries old.
There are many shops on the bridge.
What do they sell?
Mostly gold and silver jewelry.
All right, so Suzy and James are talking,
and Suzy wonders if James would like to visit Italy, right?
Italy is a country in Europe.
If you look on the map, it looks like a boot.
And James said, “Yes, I would.” He said, “It’s a wonderful country.”
I agree! I would also like to visit Italy.
And Esther, I have a question for you.
Sure!
What are three things that you think of when you’re thinking of Italy?
Well, when I think of Italy, I think of art.
Mmm, that’s a good one.
Pizza.
Pizza, okay, yeah!
And Rome.
And Rome—the wonderful capital city.
Yes, there’s so much to think of.
There’s great food there and beautiful old buildings.
Well, Suzy wonders if James went there,
where would he go first?
Right, this means when he gets there, where does he want to go?
Right, when he arrives.
Well, James says that he’d like to go to Florence.
Florence is a city that we have been talking about in northern Italy.
And so Suzy and James are now experiencing this great city
as they imagine what it would be like to be there.
They are in Florence—well, kind of.
And Suzy sees something. She says:
“There’s the famous bridge—the Ponte Vecchio.”
The Ponte Vecchio. This is a bridge.
Bridges carry you across—usually a river.
It’s hard to walk through a river,
so a bridge allows you to cross to the other side.
Right, it is a path that connects two sides of the land.
And James thinks this is a very cool bridge.
He says, “It must be really old.”
Oh, I agree with James.
It must be really old.
And that must be today’s calendar phrase.
It must be really old.
It must be really old.
It must be really old.
That is Grandma’s radio. It must be really old.
And that is Grandma’s hat. It must be really old.
Yes, and that is Grandma’s flower pot. It must be really old.
Yes.
What’s the oldest thing Grandma has?
Me.
Oh...
You must be really old.
Yeah.
It must be really old.
It must be really old.
Thanks for that, guys.
Thanks for that, guys.
Well, this bridge—Ponte Vecchio—is very old.
We hear it's centuries old, right?
In the word century, cen-tury is one of our key words.
It means one hundred years.
We live in the 21st century, right?
That means there have been twenty times one hundred years since the year zero—plus a few more.
We’re in the middle of that 21st century.
Well, we hear also there are many shops on the bridge.
So it’s not just for walking or driving across, right?
This is a very special bridge.
How many bridges do you know that have shops?
This one has many shops. And what do they sell?
Well, mostly gold and silver jewelry.
Jewelry are pretty things that people wear around them—usually women.
It’s things like rings or a necklace, right?
And gold is a kind of metal people use to make jewelry.
It’s very shiny and it’s yellow, and it is very expensive.
Many people will wear gold jewelry when they get married in Asia, right?
Well, friends, let’s go over to Sonya now to learn more.
Susie
Mostly gold and silver jewelry.
I mostly eat bread for breakfast.
The park is mostly trees and grass.
This is the most beautiful garden I’ve ever seen.
Finding and fixing problems is the most difficult job.
Thank you, Sonya.
Now friends, it’s time for us to take a quick break.
Don’t worry—we’ll be right back with more, so don’t go away.
Talking English, talking English, every day, every day!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Now, when you are a tourist in a special city,
the first place you think of going to might not be a bridge.
But maybe it should be—in Florence, right?
Because this is one of the most famous bridges in the world.
It is centuries old—the Ponte Vecchio, friends!
Let’s go back to our conversation to see what else we can find.
It would be fun to walk across the bridge.
Yes, we could see some of the buildings of Florence.
Many of them are really old.
And we could see the river and more bridges.
After we cross the bridge,
we could walk in the narrow streets and look at the shops and restaurants—
and get some pizza!
Visiting Florence would be really fun.
It would—but right now, I’d like some pizza!
Let’s go get some!
When you walk across a bridge,
you walk from one side of the bridge to the other side.
That’s right. That’s why James thinks it would be fun
to walk across the bridge here in Florence.
I think he has a good point.
And Susie tells us that when you walk on this bridge,
you can see some of the buildings of Florence.
Many of them are very old.
Yes, many of them are really old.
Florence is an old city with a lot of history.
Many famous people are from there,
as well as many famous artists.
When you are walking outside,
you will see many buildings.
Buildings have doors, and you can go inside buildings, right?
Buildings were made by people.
Houses are buildings.
Stores are buildings.
Even museums are buildings.
And from the bridge here in Florence,
you can see many old buildings.
And you can see the river and even more bridges.
Right, it’s a good place to get a nice view of the city.
Now let’s go and answer our Find It question.
Our question was:
What could Susie and James do after they cross the bridge?
The answer is:
They could walk in the narrow streets and look at the shops and restaurants.
Right, this is fun to do if you are visiting a city.
You can see what people are selling, and you can walk along the streets and look at the restaurants.
Right. Now, that word narrow here means very thin.
A lot of the streets in this old city were only made for people to walk around, and they’re very narrow.
That’s different from the U.S., where I’m from, where a lot of streets are wide—
made for cars and lots of people to move through.
Right, and on many of these old streets, cars might not even be allowed to drive on them.
You’ll need to walk if you want to visit.
Yes, so after you cross the bridge, you can see these things.
We heard the word across earlier.
Here’s Sonya to tell us the difference.
Susie
After we crossed the bridge, we could walk in the narrow street.
Do not cross the red line.
Be careful when you cross the street.
Can you walk across this rope without falling?
Tony swam across the lake.
Tony
Thank you so much, Sonya.
Well, after you cross the bridge, you can get something to eat—
maybe one of Italy’s most famous dishes.
Esther, I know you like this.
That’s right—we can get pizza there!
Pizza is a delicious kind of food.
There is a bread bottom—it’s usually round—
and on the top, you have a sauce and some toppings.
Exactly. There are special kinds of pizza in different parts of the world now,
but all of them originally came from Italy.
So make sure you try it if you visit Florence.
Right. And Susie thinks that visiting Florence would be really fun.
Right. Someday, maybe their dreams can come true and they can actually cross that bridge.
But one thing they can do right now is go get some pizza!
And that’s what they are going to do.
James said: “But right now, I’d like some pizza.”
I’d like is short for I would like.
“Let’s go get some” is short for let us go get some.
All right, friends—wherever you are, pizza is probably not too far away.
Now friends, let’s go and review our keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
bridge
There are many bridges over the river.
century
A century is one hundred years.
gold
Is the statue made of gold?
building
Did the boys go in the building?
pizza
What do you want on your pizza?
Friends, those are today’s keywords. You’re doing a great job.
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are: bridge, century, gold, building, and pizza.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence:
First one:
Jim ___ for lunch. This is a delicious food from Italy.
→ Jim ate pizza for lunch.
Next:
Can we walk across the ___? It goes over a river.
→ Can we walk across the bridge?
Next:
Peter works in that ___.
→ Peter works in that building.
Next:
___ is very expensive.
→ Gold is very expensive.
Last one:
This painting is a ___ old.
→ This painting is a century old.
Friends, that’s all for today.
I’ll see you next time for Your Turn.
It is—it is centuries old.
There are many shops on the bridge.
What do they sell?
Mostly gold and silver jewelry.
It would be fun to walk across the bridge.
Yes, we could see some of the buildings of Florence.
Many of them are really old.
And we could see the river and more bridges.
After we cross the bridge,
we could walk in the narrow streets
and look at the shops and restaurants—
and get some pizza!
Visiting Florence would be really fun.
It would. But right now, I’d like some pizza.
Let’s go get some!
One, two, let’s review—oh hi Florence, you’re back!
Haha!
My name is not Florence.
Oh, that’s right. But you’re back from Florence?
Yes—Florence, Italy!
Hey, have you been to Italy?
No, not yet, but I hear it’s a wonderful country.
Yes, it is. So if you go there, where would you like to go first?
I would visit the famous bridge—Ponte Vecchio.
It’s centuries old.
Yeah, it’s a really cool bridge.
It has many shops on it.
Really? What do they sell in the shops?
Mostly gold and silver jewelry.
Can you walk across the bridge?
Yeah! And you can see buildings, the river, and even more bridges.
Any restaurants?
Oh yeah, lots of restaurants! You can even get pizza there.
Oh, sounds good—I love pizza.
Me too. Hey, let’s go and get some now.
Uh, sounds good.
Come on, Florence, let’s go!
Hey! My name is not Florence!
Oh... all about you.
Well, friends,
even though Florence is not the most famous city for pizza in all of Italy,
it could be a great place to try it.
And Esther, I want to ask you—what is your favorite kind of pizza?
My favorite kind of pizza?
I think I like deep-dish pizza.
It’s a little different from the traditional pizza
because you add a lot of fillings inside the pizza—
lots of sauce and lots of cheese.
It comes from the American city of Chicago.
I like a more California-style pizza.
It’s thin, often with barbecue sauce and chicken.
That sounds delicious!
Friends, do you like pizza?
If so, what is your favorite kind of pizza?
All right, make sure to share that with your friends as you speak in English.
And of course, share some pizza while you do that.
Friends, we are so thankful you joined us,
and we look forward to seeing you again tomorrow.
That’s right—here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Florence, Italy is a beautiful city filled with history,
Art, and tasty food.
It’s the capital of Tuscany
And is famous for its art and architecture.
Famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci
And Michelangelo were born here.
People visit from
All over the world
To see the works of art in the city’s museums.
They walk the streets to admire the old buildings and
Churches, and to learn about the past.
Well, the city of Florence definitely is full of great food,
History, and art.
And it’s the capital city of the province of Tuscany, right?
The capital city is the city
Where the government and many famous or
Important buildings are.
It’s not the capital of the country,
But just this part of it.
And it’s famous for its art and architecture.
Now, architecture refers
To all of the buildings you can find there.
And we learn that two very famous artists, Leonardo da
Vinci and Michelangelo, were born in Florence, right?
These are two of the most famous artists ever.
They made amazing sculptures and paintings.
And they are artists — or people who make art.
Here’s Sonia to tell us more about this.
Famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci And Michelangelo were born here.
類似的名詞有 science → scientist(科學家):
Isaac Newton was a great scientist.
或是 style → stylist(造型師):
Carol is my favorite hair stylist.
Carol
還有一個 tour → tourist(觀光客):
Thousands of tourists visit London every year.
Thank you, Sonia.
Well, those artists we talked about
Made amazing pieces of art.
So people travel from all over the world to see them, right?
And people also like to walk the streets to admire or
Enjoy the old buildings and churches.
They also like to learn about the past, or what happened
In history, right?
You can also talk about your own past —
That’s everything that happened before now in your life, right?
That is what we call the past.
Now let’s continue our lesson.
The Boboli Gardens in Florence,
A beautiful green space behind the Pitti Palace,
Is a must-see.
Work began on these gardens over four hundred years ago.
They are very large and filled with fountains,
Statues, and tall trees.
It’s a perfect place to get away from the noise of the city.
You can walk around and admire the lovely flowers
And statues — you’ll see fantastic views of the city too.
We now hear about
Another special place you can visit in Florence.
These are the Boboli Gardens, right near the Pitti Palace, right?
This is a beautiful green space.
And we hear that it is a must-see.
“Must-see”
Is a place that you should visit if you go to that place.
Yeah, it’s behind this palace — a palace,
A long time ago,
And sometimes today,
Is a place where someone like a king or a queen lives.
It’s big and beautiful, right?
And we heard that this is a must-see.
Sonia, can you help us with this word?
The Boboli Gardens in Florence, a beautiful green space behind the Pitti Palace, is a must-see.

A tent is a must-have for camping.
That new pizza place is a must-try.
Thank you, Sonia.
We hear that work began on these gardens over
four hundred years ago.
This means that people began
building these gardens a long time ago,
but not necessarily that they finished them then.
But hopefully we have finished finding our Find It answer.
The question was: What fills the Boboli Gardens?
They are filled with fountains,
statues, and tall trees.
Garrett, what are fountains?
Well, fountains are things you might find in a park or a mall.
They shoot water into the air
and often have beautiful designs, right?
Sometimes there is a statue in the middle of the fountain.
The Boboli Gardens is a perfect place to get away
if you think the city is too noisy.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
And that is a perfect calendar phrase:
It’s a perfect place to get away.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
The park has beautiful flowers.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
The park has a beautiful lake.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
The park has beautiful fountains.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
But the park is usually crowded.
True.
It’s a perfect place for everyone to get away.
Yeah.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
It’s a perfect place to get away.
Well, if you need a break from the city,
Well, if you need a break from the city,
go to the Boboli Gardens.
And friends, speaking of breaks,
let’s take one right now.
We’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English — Let’s Talk in
English ten minutes of the day
every day — that’s the way.
Welcome back to the show, everyone. Earlier
we used one of my favorite words — it’s the word architecture.
This is actually something you can study
if you want to learn how to design
or build buildings, right?
And that’s what that word means — it
means how a building is designed.
A person who studies
architecture
or does that for their job is called an architect.
Exactly. Now friends, let’s continue with our lesson.
Florence also has many delicious foods that everyone loves.
One is Florentine steak.
It’s a big, thick steak that’s usually cooked rare.
Another popular food is a thick soup made with bread
and vegetables.
It started as a way for people to use leftovers,
but now it’s a famous dish of Tuscany.
People in Florence also enjoy gelato,
which is Italian ice cream.
Gelato comes in many delicious flavors,
such as chocolate,
strawberry, and mango.
All right, friends.
Let’s talk about food. Florence is not famous for pizza,
like some other cities,
but it is famous for steak, right?
There is a special kind of steak
called the Florentine steak.
Florentine means something that is from Florence.
Exactly. And we’ll remind you: a steak is a piece of beef,
or meat from a cow,
that’s cut into a slice and then cooked very nicely,
usually on a grill.
And here, Florentine steak is a big, thick steak.
It’s usually cooked rare. If something is cooked rare,
it means it’s still cooked with maybe blood still in it — yeah.
It’s not cooked all the way through.
It’ll be a little bit red in the middle.
Well, another popular food
is a thick soup made with bread and vegetables.
And why did they start cooking this?
Well, people wanted to use their leftovers,
or the food that they didn’t finish.
But now,
this is a famous dish of Tuscany — right, the whole area
around Florence.
People also enjoy gelato there.
This is like Italian ice cream.
It comes in many delicious flavors,
such as chocolate, strawberry,
mango, and, well, many more.
I’m sure if you have gelato in Florence,
you can try many special flavors, right?
I think my favorite flavor is pistachio.
It’s a kind of green nut,
and it tastes great in gelato.
Well, friends, we had some great words in our lesson,
so let’s review them.
Here is the first keyword: capital.
Capital — what is the capital of Italy?
Past
Past — their team has won in the past.
Fountain
Fountain — there is a lot of water in the fountain.
Steak
Steak — do you like to eat steak?
Rare
Rare — he cooked the meat rare.
Friends, those are today’s key words. Keep practicing!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are capital, past, fountain, steak, and rare.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
“This ___ is delicious. This is a food.”
Correct! This steak is delicious.
Next:
“It’s fun to watch the ___.”
Did you guess the answer?
It’s fun to watch the fountains.
Next:
“She doesn’t eat ___ steak. It’s not cooked for very long.”
She doesn’t eat rare steak.
Next:
“He has visited China in the ___.”
This word means before.
He has visited China in the past.
Last one:
“Many people visit the ___.”
You’re correct! Many people visit the capital.
Now do you know how to use today’s keywords?
You’re very welcome to join me again for Your Turn.

One, two, let’s review — hey!
Let’s talk about Florence. Florence?
Who is Florence?
Florence is a city in Italy.
Remember?
Of course!
It’s a beautiful city filled with history.
There are old buildings and churches.
And some famous artists were born there,
such as… um… oh!
Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo!
Right! People from all over the world visit Florence to see the artwork.
What about gardens?
Oh! Florence has beautiful gardens.
They’re over four hundred years old, filled
with large fountains,
statues, and large trees.
Right! Yes!
The gardens are a must-see.
Sounds like a perfect place
to get away from the noise of the city.
Yeah!
You can walk around and admire the flowers and statues.
Florence sounds like a fantastic place!
Yeah!
With fantastic food too! Big thick steaks,
thick soup with bread and vegetables.
What about gelato?
Yeah — Italian ice cream!
Mmm… chocolate,
strawberry, and mango!
Someday I’d like to go visit Florence.
Florence? Who’s Florence?
Florence — the city in Italy!
Oh! Haha! Yeah, now I remember!
Hello friends!
Welcome back to What’s Next!
My name is Cela.
Let’s take a look at some pictures on my iPad today.
Let’s get started. Yes!
I think that’s a stone statue with wings.
One man is using a hammer to make it.
The other man is… hmm…
I think he is sneezing.
Why is he sneezing?
Oh, maybe he is sneezing from all the dust in the air!
Yes — the dust from the stonework.
Oh no! The statue is falling down!
I think the man accidentally pushed the statue when he sneezed.
That’s not good.
The statue will probably break into little pieces now.
Oh no!
It was such a beautiful statue too.
What will happen to the statue?
Will the man catch it?
Will they need to make another one?
What will happen next?
Wait, what?
This is the same statue,
but it is missing a lot of pieces.
There is no head,
and I don’t see any arms.
But why is it still standing up?
Oh, look at the people.
The people are dressed differently.
They are people from today.
They are using phones to take pictures of the statue.
Aha! So this famous statue is now in an art museum!
Do you think the people today know how the statue broke?
Maybe that’s a secret.
Many old statues are missing pieces like hands,
arms, and heads because they are so old.
We don’t know how some statues break.
Maybe they fell down after someone had dropped it.
Or… they sneezed.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next!
Well, now that we’re done talking about Florence —
Esther, what do you think is the most interesting part of this city?
You know, I really would like to visit the Duomo.
I’d like to climb up that dome and get the nice
view of the city.
How about you, Garrett?
Well, I do love to try new foods.
A Florentine steak sounds wonderful!
Maybe I could try one after walking across the Ponte
Vecchio.
That sounds great!
Do you think you’ll buy your wife
some jewelry — maybe a gold watch?
Ooh… I don’t know if she would want a gold one,
but looking at the jewelry there would be fun.
Old friends, we hope you enjoyed this travel lesson,
that you are inspired,
and we hope to see you again tomorrow,
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
