What is there?
So first, let’s review what a visual is.
A visual is something you can see.
It might be a list, a chart, or a picture.
It could even be a map.
That’s kind of what we’re talking about today, a map of what you can find in a department store.
This is like one big store with lots of different departments.
Each one sells different things, from kitchen things to things you’d use in your bedroom.
But in some places, this word department store describes a mall with many different stores, right?
And let’s talk about this word directory.
This is a list of information or tools.
So today we’re looking at a department store directory.
It’s going to tell us, on each floor of this department store, what you can buy.
Exactly.
You might hear that word directory in other places.
If you’re going through your computer, a directory might tell you about the different files that are in there.
Or a directory can tell you what different people’s phone numbers are.
Right, that would be a telephone book directory.
Now it’s time for us to go to Sonia who will teach us our keywords.

Department store directories are helpful.

And if you don’t have too much time, you can take the elevator or the escalator to the floor you want to go to buy what you want to buy.

Friends, we’ve already talked about some of those words in that sentence, right?
Again, a department store is a building where you can buy many different kinds of things.
In some places, people use this when they are talking about a mall.
Exactly.
Sara is talking to Sam.
He agrees that these directories are helpful.
Today he has to buy new furniture and bedding for his apartment.
And a department store can be a great place to find those.
Right, Sam looks at the directory and he sees that these things are on the sixth floor.
Now let’s talk about furniture.
Furniture are things like your bed or your desk that you put in your home that you need.
Right, furniture are those bigger things that you use in your house and you probably keep for a long time.
We also heard that he needs to buy bedding.
Bedding is, well, things you put on your bed.
It’s not the bed itself but it’s things like blankets and pillows, right?
And Sarah, she wants to buy kitchen supplies.
Now a supply is something that you can use.
So kitchen supplies are things you can use in the kitchen.
Maybe she wants to buy a can opener.
Or maybe she wants to buy something that she needs for baking.
Right, or pots and pans, that kind of thing.
You might also hear people talk about craft supplies.
Those are things you use when making arts and crafts, from colored pens to paints to fun colored paper.
Well, if you want kitchen supplies, you can look at the directory at this department store and see that they are also on the sixth floor.
So Sam says, let’s go up there together.
And friends, “let’s go up there together” is today’s calendar phrase.

When you window shop, it means you are looking at things but not buying or paying money to get something.
The term comes from looking through a shop window at what they have without walking in.
Of course, you’re not doing that at a department store, but we still use that same term.

Well he sure needs to buy a lot of things.
He’s not just looking for bedding and furniture.
He also needs some books and office supplies.
Friends did you hear that word supplies again.
Office supplies are things like pens and a stapler.
A notebook and things you might need to use in your office or other stationary right.
It could be things you use at home too that are kind of office related well.
Sam needs to look for these things as well.
And Sarah also shares some things she’s looking for.
She wants a new purse and some makeup.
Right friends a lot of woman wear makeup.
Makeup are the things you put on your face like lipstick or eyeshadow.
To give yourself more energy or color.
Sarah tells us that she can find these things a purse and a makeup on the first floor exactly.
She can find makeup there and look for it on the first floor.

Purses are always worn by women men don’t use purses.
Purses can fit a lot of things in them that women need in daily life right.
Instead of wearing a backpack you might want to wear a purse especially if you’re wearing clothes that look a little nicer.
Now what else does Sam want to buy well.
He wants a toy for Mike’s birthday present.
Now that word toy is a fun one it sure is.
Toys are things children play with like blocks or cars or stuffed animals right.
There are so many different kinds of toys and there will probably be a toy section at almost every department store with all different kinds of toys.
And at this department store Sarah tells us that children’s toys are on the fifth floor exactly well it’s time now for them to get shopping.
That’s why Sam says let’s get everything they need to go up whether they go on the elevator or the escalator right.
And the escalator is that thing that looks like stairs that move which you will find at a department store right.
Then after they get everything they want to buy they can meet at the sushi restaurant we hear that’s in B one for lunch.
I think if you go to some places in the U S you won’t say B one you’ll just see maybe basement right.
And that’s the floor below ground level or the first floor.
Now sushi is very popular.
It is Japanese food with often rice and raw fish or other seafood on it right.
And this shows us one other thing you might find at a department store and that is a food court.
A place with some different things to eat though this is more common at a mall right.
And now they need to get all the things they talked about getting and then they’re going to meet and have food together exactly.
Well friends if you are looking for not just one thing but all sorts of different kinds of things a department store can be a great place to go and find all of those things in one place.
And be sure you make a plan first take a look at the department store directory then decide where you want to go first exactly.
