Hello everyone,
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett, thanks for joining us.
And my name is Esther. Today, our topic is "Talk About It."
Our title is It’s Your Turn Now, right?
When we do something, we take turns. For example,
when you go to the bathroom,
you need to wait for your turn to do something.
They can do it one at a time, or if you were to play a board game,
you take turns—one person goes at a time.
Now, in our Talk About It lessons,
we talk about things that people might discuss because they have a problem,
they’re not sure what to do,
so they need to talk about things. As we go through our story today,
try to imagine that you are one of the characters.
Then, think about what you would do if you were that person, right?
We can say, "Try to put yourself in their shoes,"
try to feel what they’re feeling, and try to think the way they might be thinking, yeah?
The answer might not be easy.
It might be difficult to figure out what the right decision is,
but it’s important to think about this.
Now, let’s go to our Find It question. Our question is:
Who will expect a very nice birthday gift from Melissa?
Which of the characters’ friends?
Find the answer in our lesson today.
Now, let’s go to Sonya, who will teach us our keywords.

Right away, she sees her co-worker Melissa.

Betty gets out of her car and walks toward the office.
She took a trip to Paris last week and is happy to be back.
Right away, she sees her co-worker Melissa. "Betty, welcome back! How was your trip?"
Melissa asks.
"It was fantastic! I brought so many great things back," Betty says.
"Well, you do love to shop. What did you get?" Melissa asks.
At the beginning of today’s story, we see two women: one is called Betty,
the other one is called Melissa.
Betty gets out of her car at the beginning of her story.
She’s getting to her office, and we hear that she took a trip.
Where did she go? She went to Paris, France, and she’s happy to be back.
Yes, she comes back to the office, and right away,
she sees her co-worker Melissa.
Right now, when you say "right away," it means immediately.
Then, you are not going to wait. You might say,
"I need to go to the bathroom right away." Exactly!
Melissa welcomes Betty back and wants to know how Betty’s trip was.
Well, Betty had a great trip! She tells us it was fantastic,
and she says she brought back so many great things.
Well, she does love to shop, we learn this from Melissa.
And Melissa wants to know what Betty got on her trip to Paris.
Right now, when we say, "What did you get?"
Melissa is asking what Betty bought. What did she spend her money on when she went to Paris? Exactly.
Well, Paris is a place with lots of great stores, lots of great food, and a lot to see.
So let’s go find out what she got in the next part of our story.
"I got something for you," Betty says.
She takes out some French perfume and hands it to Melissa.
"It smells wonderful! You’ll love it," Betty says.
"Thank you, Betty, but I can’t accept this. It’s too nice of a gift," Melissa replies.
"Keep it, I like to share," Betty insists.
"Don’t forget, we’re celebrating my birthday tonight. I’ll see you at seven o’clock,"
Betty says as she walks away.
Betty tells Melissa that she got something for her. What did she get for Melissa?
She got her some French perfume.
Now, perfume is that stuff that women spray onto their clothes or their body to smell nice.
Men do a similar thing, but what men use is called cologne, right?
And Betty tells Melissa that this perfume smells wonderful.
She thinks that Melissa will love it.
Exactly! French perfume—many perfume brands from France are quite popular.
And Melissa is thankful. She says thank you to Betty.
She also says, "I can’t accept this."
Now, if you accept something, it means you take it or you receive it.
Yes, the opposite is reject or you say no to something.
So Melissa doesn’t want to accept this perfume.
She thinks it’s too nice of a gift.
If you say, "It’s too nice of a gift," you’re kind of saying this gift is too big of a gift,
or maybe this gift is a little expensive.
You don’t think you should have something that nice.
You feel bad about taking it.
Well, it is time to go and learn with Sonya.

and give it to other people so other people can use it as well.
Some people like to share their things, and other people like to share their time.
And Betty reminds Melissa of something—they’re celebrating Betty’s birthday tonight.
It’s at seven o’clock, Betty says this as she walks away.
And she doesn’t want Melissa to forget.
If you forget something, you don’t remember. That’s why Betty says, "Don’t forget."

Now we hear that someone else from work, another co-worker, walks over. This is a man called Fred.
Fred sees that Melissa has that nice French perfume on her desk, and he says it looks fancy. If something looks fancy, it means it looks very special or even a little expensive, right?
Well, Melissa shares that Betty gave the perfume to her. She brought it back from Paris for her.
Melissa also says, "It looks expensive."
If something looks expensive, it looks like you spent a lot of money buying it.
"It looks expensive" is also today’s calendar phrase:
