His Holiness Living Buddha Lian-Sheng Sheng-Yen Lu meticulously explained the key point of the Refuge Tree to the disciples.
"In the middle of the Refuge Tree, the Root Guru is seated in the center. Above His head are the lineage gurus. So every time before I expound the Dharma, I must pay homage to my lineage gurus. With the top of my head, I touched the feet of my Root Gurus,...we must think of our Root Guru as the equivalent of Buddha! To have pure faith wholeheartedly and to pay homage with our body, speech & mind!"
"Why isn't Shakyamuni Buddha the one sitting on the top of your head? Because Buddha is also present in the Refuge Tree. The Root Guru sits in the middle, with Shakyamuni Buddha and Buddhas from the ten directions & three periods of time in front. On the left are Sariputra and Maudgalyayana,...some of the Sravakayana and Pratyeakabuddha disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha. On the right are the trinity of family protectors: Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Chenrezig), Vajrapani Bodhisattva and Manjushri Bodhisattva, representing compassion, dharmic power and wisdom respectively."
