TED】Ric Elias：墜機讓我學到的三件事 (3 things I learned while my plane crashed | Ric Elias)

相信很多人有看過或是聽過由湯姆漢克斯主演的《薩利機長：哈德遜奇蹟》(Sully)，這部電影改編自 2009 年全美 1549 號航班的飛安事故。影片中的講者 Ric Elias 正是當時飛機上的乘客之一。在鬼門關前走一遭的 Ric Elias 和大家分享當時他腦中的人生跑馬燈，有哪些後悔的事以及奇蹟生還後的心境轉變。這是一個勵志的故事，一起來看看吧！

line up 是動詞「排隊；排成一列」的意思，當成名詞片語時，line-up 就是「隊伍；陣容」，可以用在一個球隊或是一場演出的明星陣容，或是用在指認哪個是嫌犯時「排成一排的人們」。

Please line up behind this line and take a number.
請先在這條線後排隊，並領取號碼牌。

line 這個字當「隊伍」的名詞，有其他常見的搭配片語，例如：cut in line 為「插隊」、get in line 為「排隊」等。

Hey, dont cut in line! Weve been waiting in line for an hour!
嘿！別插隊，我們已經排了一小時了耶！

也可以用 line up + something 指「把⋯排成一列」或是「安排好、準備好某事」。

William lined up his figurine collection on the shelf.
威廉把他收集的公仔在架子上排成一列。

Ken lined up a flash mob dance for his romantic proposal.
肯恩為他的浪漫求婚策劃了一場快閃舞。

2brace for impact1:13
brace for impact 是「準備好衝擊」之意，在電影中若有飛機迫降的劇情，就會聽到這一句話。brace for 是「為⋯做好準備」之意，brace 當動詞是「支撐」的意思，而 impact 是名詞「影響、衝擊」之意。

In Sully, every passenger assumes the bracing position after the captain commands "brace for impact."
在《薩利機長：哈德遜奇蹟》中，每個乘客一聽到機長説「準備好撞擊」時，都採取了這個降低衝擊的姿勢。

brace oneself for something 就是「準備好應付 (困難的情境)」的意思。

The host of weather forecast called for people to brace themselves for the upcoming typhoon.
氣象主播呼籲大家要做好準備，因應即將來臨的颱風。

in an instant 有「立刻、說時遲，那時快」的意思。instant 當名詞是剎那、瞬間，或是指只要加水即可食用的食物，因此泡麵的英文就是 instant noodles。

When Sandra heard someone fainted and others asking for a doctor, she ran there and help in an instant.
珊卓一聽到有人昏倒了在尋求醫生的幫助，就馬上跑去幫忙。

The panicked mother told the station staff that she was with her son in the crowd, and then in an instant, he was gone.
這位焦急的媽媽告訴站務員，她兒子一轉眼就在人群中不見了。

4eliminate 2:43
eliminate 是動詞「排除、消除」，或是指比賽中的「淘汰」。eliminate 通常用來表示除掉負面的事物。後加上一個人時則是委婉表示除掉或暗殺某人。

In the movie, the scientists tested the new drug, whose goal is to eliminate Alzheimers disease in apes and chimpanzees.
電影中，科學家們把消除阿茲海默症的新藥用在猿猴和猩猩身上做實驗。

We may not completely eliminate the problem of animal abuse, but we can start with refusing to ride elephants or other animals.
我們可能無法完全消除虐待動物的問題，但我們可以從拒騎大象或其他動物開始做起。

bawl 是動詞「喊叫、咆哮」以及在影片中的「嚎啕大哭」的意思。

I thought I wasn’t going to cry at the high-school graduation ceremony, it turned out I bawled when bunch of friends started crying.
我以為在高中畢業典禮上我絕對不會哭的，殊不知在我朋友開始哭之後我也嚎啕大哭了起來。
