worship (n.) [ˋwɝʃɪp]

a.       to have or show a strong feeling of respect and admiration for God or a god

e.g.: On the island the people worshipped different gods.

b.      to go to a religious ceremony

e.g.: They socialize together and worship in the same mosque.

executant (n.) [ɪgˋzɛkjʊtənt]

a.        one who performs or carries out, especially a skilled performer

e.g.: The dancer is the choreographer's executant.

pearl (n.) [pɝl]

a.       a small, round object, usually white, that forms around a grain of sand inside the shell of a sea creature, especially an oyster . Pearls are valuable and are used to make jewellery

pictorial (adj.) [pɪkˋtorɪəl]

a.       shown in the form of a picture or photograph

e.g.: The exhibition is a pictorial history/record of the town in the 19th century.

gainsay (v.) [genˋse]

a.       to refuse to accept something as the truth

e.g.: Certainly there's no gainsaying the technical brilliance of his performance.

a.       the feeling that there is no hope and that you can do nothing to improve a difficult or worrying situation

e.g.: They're in (the depths of) despair over/about the money they've lost.

drape (n.) [drep]

a.       to put something such as cloth or a piece of clothing loosely over something

e.g.: He draped his jacket over the back of the chair and sat down to eat.

b.      to be loosely covered with a cloth

e.g.: The coffins were all draped with the national flag.

linger (v.) [ˋlɪŋgɚ]

a.       to take a long time to leave or disappear

e.g.: After the play had finished, we lingered for a while in the bar hoping to catch sight of the actors.

disperse (v.) [dɪˋspɝs]

a.       to spread across or move away over a large area, or to make something do this

e.g.: When the rain came down the crowds started to disperse.

intoxicate (v.) [ɪnˋtɑksə͵ket]

a.       to make someone drunk

e.g.: The drug has the power to heal or intoxicate.

b.      to make someone excited, happy, and slightly out of control

a.       to touch or kiss someone in a gentle and loving way

a.       to think carefully about something, especially for a noticeable length of time

a.       in some Churches, an area cared for by one priest with its own church, or (in England) the smallest unit of local government

a.       with the protection or support of someone or something, especially an organization

a.       an expensive white or pink fizzy (= with bubbles) wine made in the Champagne area of Eastern France, or, more generally, any similar wine. Champagne is often drunk to celebrate something

sermon (n.) [ˋsɝmən]

a.       a part of a Christian church ceremony in which a priest gives a talk on a religious or moral subject, often based on something written in the Bible

e.g.: The Reverend William Cronshaw delivered/preached the sermon.

b.      a long talk in which someone advises other people how they should behave in order to be better people

e.g.: I really don't think it's a politician's job to go delivering sermons on public morality.

a.       a song or other piece of music sung or played by two people

generality (n.) [͵dʒɛnəˋrælətɪ]

a.       an occasion when what someone says contains no details, and often very little meaning, or a statement of this type

e.g.: We need to get away from generalities and focus on the issues.

lump (n.) [lʌmp]

a.       a piece of a solid substance, usually with no particular shape

b.      a separate large amount

e.g.: I'll be getting the insurance money in two lumps.

sop (n.) [sɑp]

a.       something of little importance or value that is offered to stop complaints or unhappiness

e.g.: Critics see the increase in defence spending as a sop to the armed forces rather than an improvement of national security.

angelic (adj.) [ænˋdʒɛlɪk]

a.  very beautiful and very good
