Fantasy Novel《Paradise Hotel》
CREATIVE CONCEPT
Paradise Hotel is my second original fantasy novel. Ever since I was a student, I have enjoyed reading fantasy novels, from The Lord of the Rings to Twilight, and from The Investiture of the Gods to Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. The various characters in these novels—heroes, demons, prophets, warriors, and others—the magnificent and bizarre settings, and the mysterious, suspenseful, and convoluted plots have deeply captured my imagination and planted the seed for my later creation of fantasy novels.
This story has been read by two film producers and directors at different times. They believe that it has “considerable international box-office potential” and encouraged me to adapt it into a screenplay. They have also taken the initiative to help me seek potential investors. At present, I am seeking a co-production partnership with film and television companies across the Taiwan Strait. In addition, through my connections, I established contact with the Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki. After reading the Japanese translation of the novel, he also expressed a high level of interest, believing that the story could be adapted into an animated feature film, and was considering sending a representative to Taiwan to discuss the project with me.
Fantasy films are a field worthy of development. I hope that this fantasy screenplay will receive the Ministry of Culture’s serious attention and full support, giving Taiwan’s film and creative works an opportunity to shine on the international stage and increasing Taiwan’s visibility internationally.
STORY OUTLINE
Travel writer Lin Hsiao-yang comes to Europe for an independent trip. While searching for his missing girlfriend, Hsieh Hui-chun, Hsiao-yang checks into Paradise Hotel beside Lake Lucerne and becomes entangled in a struggle between two opposing factions of vampires in the dark world. Hsiao-yang meets the painter Huang Li-hua, who lives within the mural in his room. Li-hua tells Hsiao-yang that he is an old vampire who has been trapped in the hotel against his will. Sympathetic to Li-hua’s plight, Hsiao-yang develops an unusual friendship with him despite their difference in age. On Ghost Day, Li-hua warns Hsiao-yang to leave the hotel immediately to avoid being killed by the vampires. Li-hua is arrested and punished by being transformed into a stone statue. Grateful that Li-hua sacrificed himself to save him, Hsiao-yang returns to the hotel and takes a roll of film from Li-hua’s stone statue. He brings Li-hua’s works to Paris and makes them known to the public. Later, Princess Maria learns that Li-hua has been captured. She orders her general, the Dragon Knight, to lead the Iron-Blooded Imperial Guard in sweeping away the evil spirits under Anderson who have occupied Paradise Hotel and rescuing Huang Li-hua.
Huang Li-hua goes to Paris to find Hsiao-yang and grants him the ability to paint, asking him to return and take over the management of Paradise Hotel. He also tells Hsiao-yang that his granddaughter, Huang Min-hua, will soon be arriving. Min-hua appears as scheduled. Through Li-hua’s deliberate efforts to bring the two together, Hsiao-yang and Min-hua gradually develop romantic feelings for each other because of their close proximity. Li-hua then reveals many shocking secrets to Hsiao-yang, who finally realizes that everything that happened before had been arranged by Princess Maria. Entrusted with an important mission by Li-hua, Hsiao-yang learns that in his previous life he was David, the princess’s beloved captain of the guard, and that in the future he must help Princess Maria defeat Anderson, the ambitious Demon King of the dark world. However, Hsiao-yang remains uncertain about whether he was born with extraordinarily powerful supernatural abilities. It is not until Min-hua gives him her first kiss that the seal on Hsiao-yang’s body is accidentally broken, allowing him to recover the memories of his previous life.
From that point on, under Princess Maria’s strategic direction, Lin Hsiao-yang follows Father John Chen, who is both his mentor and his friend, and gradually develops his own potential. Hsiao-yang also draws inspiration from martial-arts comics and develops a sophisticated and ingenious style of swordsmanship. Father John Chen gives the princess his full support. First, he subdues the assassin couple, Lorna and Keith, who serve under General White Wolf. He then fights and seriously injures George the Phantom Hand and Jack the Scissor Hand, Anderson’s left and right protectors respectively, forcing the former to cripple his own martial arts abilities and retire into seclusion, while the latter takes his own life.
Because Princess Maria has eliminated his two protectors, Anderson is consumed by resentment. He therefore mobilizes his entire force. Following the strategy proposed by the Grand Mage Rolf, he divides his army into three routes. White Wolf and Black Bear each lead a force of bat-army demons to attack major cities such as Naples and Florence, massacring innocent civilians and creating panic. Their purpose is to lure Princess Maria into deploying the Iron-Blooded Imperial Guard and keep the guard forces occupied among several major Italian cities, thereby allowing Anderson to lead his main force across the border into Switzerland and attack Paradise Hotel and the Sky Castle.
Father John Chen is resourceful and strategic. On the one hand, he coordinates the Roman Catholic Church’s demon-exorcism forces with Princess Maria’s Iron-Blooded Imperial Guard under the command of the Dragon Knight, sending them separately to support the Italian military and police. They enter several cities to wipe out the two bat armies under Generals White Wolf and Black Bear and restore public confidence. On the other hand, Father John personally goes to the border checkpoint between Italy and Switzerland, organizes the local military, police, and militia, and uses the natural terrain to resist the main force of Anderson’s bat army.
When Anderson’s main force attempts to cross the border, it encounters fierce resistance. A force of more than a thousand is reduced to only a little over sixty men, greatly relieving the pressure on Paradise Hotel. Anderson and Rolf enter the hotel and issue a challenge. Father John returns in time, eliminates the remaining bat soldiers outside the hotel, and joins forces with Lin Hsiao-yang. After a fierce battle, Maria transforms herself into Hsieh Hui-chun and deliberately pretends to be captured by Anderson and fatally attacked. This awakens Hsiao-yang’s determination to fight with everything he has. He finally defeats Anderson and sends him back to Hell, while Rolf is also successfully persuaded by Princess Maria to change his allegiance and is led away from the scene. Huang Min-hua returns for a vacation and rekindles her relationship with Lin Hsiao-yang.
