Babel : 西方人解釋不同語言的由來 (後來演變為混亂之義)

西方文學的兩大源頭 : 希臘神話, 聖經

由希臘神話中演變而來的字 : 

1. Titanic (adj.) 巨大的、chaos (n)混亂
宇宙最初的形態是混沌(Chaos)。混沌生了地神該亞(Gaea)，之後出現的是在大地出生的厄瑞玻斯(Erevus;黑暗）及在地面出生的尼克特(Night;夜晚）。厄瑞玻斯和尼克特兄妹兩結合生下了光亮(Light) 和白日(Day)。接著該亞生出了天空，即是穹蒼之神烏拉諾斯(Uranus)，烏拉諾斯和該亞結合，成為世界的主宰。他們生下六男六女，即十二泰坦巨神(Titans)。 

2. Odyssey (n.) 長途飄泊
奧德賽(Odyssey)是古希臘最重要的兩部史詩之一（另一部是《伊利亞特》），相傳為盲詩人荷馬所作。

奧德賽講述話經過特洛伊戰爭之後，在希臘軍回家途中，因為英雄奧德修斯（Odysseus）激怒海神波賽頓，所以波賽頓降臨災禍於他，使他們遇到海難，全軍覆沒。奧德修斯雖因機智和勇敢逃過一劫，但波賽頓的憤怒未息，故使奧德修斯找不到回家的航線而在大海裡漂流。而另一方面他的妻子不知奧德修斯的生死，面對著蠻橫的求婚者就只有苦等著丈夫的回來。最後在諸神的幫忙下，經過十年漂流生活的奧德修斯終於回到家裡與他的妻子團聚，並與兒子和僕人聯手殺死了求婚者。

因此後來這個字"odyssey"就有「長途飄泊之旅」之意。 

 3. Achille’s heel 致命的弱點
Achille 是古希臘傳說中的一位傑出英雄，他在特洛伊戰爭中身經百戰，屢建功勛。據說，Achille 出生時也只是一個極其普通的孩子。他的母親為了鍛煉他堅強的意志，造就他一副刀槍不入的鋼鐵之軀，便倒提著他的身體放到環繞地獄的河－－冥河中去侵泡。果然，經過浸泡他的身體變成了一副鋼筋鐵骨，任何兇惡的敵人也不是他的對手。但是，他的一雙腳後跟卻因握在母親的手裡，始終沒有浸泡到冥河之中。這樣，他的腳後跟與普通人的一樣，這也就成了這位英雄的致命弱點。後來，在一次戰鬥中，被他的仇敵射中了這隻腳後跟。這位戰功赫赫、所向無故的英胸最終死於自身的這一致命弱點。

又因為我所得的啟示太大，恐怕會高抬自己，所以就有一根刺加在我的身上，就是撒但的差役來攻擊我，免得我高抬自己。

   generation : all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively.
