About Ralph Waldo Emerson

1. It is not worth the while to go around the world to count the cats in zanzibar. (Emerson)

2. His essay often with three theme:  nonconformity, self-seliance, anti-institutinal. Also he lives his life based on these three criteria.

3. He influences Henry Daid Thoreau, Edgar Allen Poe, and Whitman.

4. Romantic period: individualism + emotionalism + humanism

5. Reformism is started from Emerson.

6. His first book : Nature

About Nature

1. Trascendentalists. Participants include Bronson Alcott and Henry David Thoreau.

2. 強調個人想法的渺小: valuing individual right

3. Transcend according to Emerson, for reason the intuition arise from a higher faculty within man because of which he can know ultimate truth.

4. Man's self is divine. 天助自助者, 人是神的一部份的概念

5. Emphasize on the solitude, loneliness, and alone.

About Nathaniel Hawthorne

1. "The most valuable example of American genius."

2. Hawthorne's hometown is Salem, Massachusetts which is the setting in The House of the Seven Gables; Hawthorne later lived in Concord.

3. Three major themes:   3-1 the embrace between life in death

                                     3-2 the relation between sanctity and paganism

                                     3-3 inherited guilt and traditional curses

                                     3-4 the ravage of moral decay

                                     3-5 the importance of beauty in a dark and alien

                                           world

4. He dicoverd his love of reading, displaying this particular interest in John Bunyan's Puritan allegory The Pilgrim's Progess.

5. In the setting he devic=ses the evil is palpable.

6. He detested and derided its iron doctrine of evil.

About The Scarlet Letter

1. In the book, the letter "A" stands for 

2. The Scarlet Letter is an 1850 romantic work of fiction in a historical setting, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and is considered to be his magnum opus.

3.  Set in 17th-century Puritan Boston, Massachusetts during the years 1642 to 1649

4. Throughout the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.
