I have talked about the Amethyst Incident twice in my previous writings. In spring 1949, when the PLA was ready to cross over Long River and further eradicate the last dregs of the KMT, the British frigate Amethyst entered the Chinese inner river, trying to interfere in the civil war, under the name of protecting its expatriates.  Then a gun battle between the PLA and British Navy broke out.

Why should I tell you the story three times?  Because the incapable Qing Dynasty conceded the cabotage to the imperialists under unequal treaties, foreign warships could cruise in our inner river without any restraints, even Nationalist China, the "Big Five", could not lift the shameful shackles.  But not for New China.  Now I must remind you again that the relation between Taiwan and Mainland China is virtually an unfinished civil war.  If any other foreign powers dare to interfere in Chinas internal affairs, the latter-day Amethyst Incident will surely happen again.
